3 Why is Big Data so important? Amazon shows you items that you are likely to buy using big data Tesco s recommendation system and personal offers are built using big data Big data lead to the capture of Osama Bin Laden by CIA Google s search results and page ranks are based on big data Analyzing huge volumes of customer comments in real time delivers a competitive edge for Hertz 3

4 Sources of data Social Networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google, blogs, Amazon, ZDNet, etc) Activity generated data (Computer and mobile device log files, aka The Internet of Things. ) Public (World Bank, SEC/Edgar, Wikipedia, IMDb, etc) Data warehouses Legacy documents (archives of statements, insurance forms, medical record and customer correspondence) YouTube users upload 48 hours of new video every minute of the day 100 terabytes of data uploaded daily to Facebook Twitter sees roughly 175 million tweets every day, and has more than 465 million accounts 30 Billion pieces of content shared on Facebook every month 4

5 Facebook data gives an edge An average Facebook profile contains 5,000-10,000 pieces of information, out of which up to 100 is relevant in credit scoring. In addition, browser data reveals a lot about applicants computer hardware and software. Also, we track how user navigates on the web and how long does it take to fill in various fields. Hence, we get to know the applicant inside out, starting from hobbies, likes, education and workplace up to Facebook activity dynamics, geographical locations and played games. Source: Facebook 5

6 How does online credit scoring work? Majority of lenders base their credit decisions on data from loan application (age, ID code, address, income, etc) and credit bureaus (e.g. Infomonitor). Standard traditional loan application All in all, they are able to collect only up to pieces of data. Scientific regression analysis is rarely done. Usually, simple Excel correlations or decision tree type of process is used. Although every major research has proven that regression based methods are always superior to more simple approaches, companies lack skills and people. 6

7 Value added by BDS BDS has changed that and takes social media and other on-line data to credit decision makers, hence improving credit quality and increasing loan acceptance rates. Our algorithms are based on years of data collection and modeling. Actual payment data received from the banks has enabled us to discover the correlations and patterns in social media behavior that lead to bad credit decisions. As a result, we can now precisely predict the default rate of anyone using only Facebook. Our models help lenders save money on credit losses and make more money on increased acceptance rate 7

8 Facebook scoreband table Anyone with a score of 10 has only 4% probability of being more than 90 days late with loan repayments At the same time, when someone gets a score of 1, there is more than 80% probability that the loan will not be paid back on time (or not paid back at all) 8

9 Real life example 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0% 1 2 Acceptance rate (lh) Credit loss 3.40% 3.30% 3.20% 3.10% 3.00% 2.90% 2.80% 2.70% A pan-european consumer lending specialist had achieved credit loss rates of 3.3% and loan acceptance rate of 40% using traditional credit scoring methods (data from credit bureaus and loan application) The lender was already using sophisticated regression based scoring methods, but still saw an improvement in all scorebands thanks to inclusion of Facebook and other on-line data. With the integration of Big Data Score, the credit loss dropped to 2.9% and loan acceptance improved to 53%. 9
