4 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA identity official logo offizielles Logo Since 2005, the word image mark University of Vienna exists with the word mark set in Optima and the (historic) Sapientia seal. The university commissioned the agency Bluetango in Vienna to analyze the view towards the brand and to make recommendations regarding the vision and mission. Excerpt from the briefing: In the year 2015, the University of Vienna celebrates its 650th anniversary. By then, the brand University of Vienna should appear stronger from the outside and more confident on the inside.. Bluetango hired the art director Lo Breier, who took me on board, to guide the visual communication Sina Otto
5 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA brand development My work began with an extensive research on visual appearance of universities all over the world. The visual appearance should become more modern, more likeable and more visible taking into account the values tradition, innovation and diversity. The choice of colours was determined quickly. The new tones should have a festive and elegant connotation. As its basis, I took the trefoil that can be found in the historic symbols of the university. Triangles unfold from the resulting grid, that then indicates an omitted V for Vienna Sina Otto
6 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA brand development You can also see open books in the triangles and rhombuses which frame the V. The logo appears cheerful, innovative, light and playful, whereupon the elements are held together in conjunction with the lettering and are highly recognizable. As far as the type is concerned, the choice fell on the font family Fedra (by Peter Bilak, 2002 resp. 2004) that appears very modern, serious and strong and that is also multilingual. Furthermore, the serif-version can be combined with the sans serif Sina Otto

8 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA brand development Over the following months we developed various applications (for example, we designed the the website) and it went through presentations in different committees. In the meantime, poster series with the present logo were implemented. In August 2013, the implementation of the new brand was refused by the senate Sina Otto

We reduced the seal and implemented the historic trefoil. Furthermore, we changed the typeface for the ring into Fedra. For months, small details were discussed. Then the client decided to apply more elements from the old seal Sina Otto
10 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA redesign For the year 2014, a timetable was set for the introduction in any kind of media. Eventually, the implementation of a new seal and new typeface was overturned. Lo Breier and I also continued working on a typographic solution for the associations of the university Sina Otto

12 UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA jubilee brand In celebration of the 650th anniversary of University of Vienna in the year 2015, I created a logo. The word Jahre (years) appears with the logotype, and both are set in the font Optima. The jubilee brand was released in November Sina Otto

14 FRAU WAGNER identity Over two years I was responsible for the web and print material of fashion label and designer Frau Wagner. In a redesign process we defined the basic elements: We chose black and white because contrast is a core value of her philosophy. The logo remained in its original form of font on a white rectangle. The typeface is Avenir. Beside presentations and invitations Susanne Wagner and I designed the website One year later, we created the online shop Sina Otto

18 identity for ALTE SCHULE country hotel in Minsen
19 ALTE SCHULE identity The owners of the country hotel Alte Schule, which is located on the north sea, asked me to work on their visual appearance. As the house used to be a school, it s on the dice that elements were inspired by that subject. So the green of a board was added. The website ought to be responsive. Unfortunately the design wasn t implemented, because an old template was used due to cost concerns Sina Otto

21 ALTE SCHULE lettering As far as the logotype was concerned, we agreed that it should have script character, and they were pleased with my first layout. In the end, the client decided on a common script type for their logo Sina Otto

23 F&P FIBONET Basiselemente The two partners wished their logogram (F&P) to be converted into a symbol that could stand alone. It was clear that it had to be dynamic, technical, stimulating, functional and friendly. It was a long processs and a great number of versions were presented. One of my designs in particular appealed to the client (see above). It was finalised by a colleague. I chose the typeface Conduit for the logotype that additionally became the corporate font Sina Otto
24 F&P FIBONET Weihnachtskarte (A6) A further element of the corporate design is an artistic illustration, which I adapted to the applications. Letters were set in outline open to the top and down to indicate the cable they are working with and to obtain a fresh look Sina Otto

26 exhibition catalogue for IKEA home furnishing products
27 IKEA Ausstellungskatalog I was commissioned to produce a catalogue for the IKEA PS design collection (46 products by 20 designers), which was exhibited in a gallery in Hamburg the only requirement being the use of the corporate font. To direct one s attention to the products and to give it an exclusive and a classical (you can even say magical) aspect, no colour was added just black and white. I neatly arranged the pages, but I kept it vibrant as these IKEA furnishing products have a playful touch and they are inspired by nature Sina Otto

29 THE ATLANTIC TIMES Berlin Special newspaper To mark the occasion the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, Atlantic Times published a special edition. The monthly newspaper mainly addresses the readers in the US and is available at authorities, such as embassies and the White House. The Berlin Special was created in a small team under the direction of Walter Mayer within two weeks. Apart from high-profile editors, the authors also included well-known people like Roland Jahn, Wolfgang Joop and Katja Eichinger. Many conversions were necessary because texts were delivered at last minute, the number of pages were increased and more ads came in on the final evening. The 16-sided special edition is published in US american broadsheet forma is published as supplement of the Atlantic Times in US american broadsheet format (in 318 x 578 mm). Upon completion it was adapted to half Nordisch format ( mm) Sina Otto

35 INTO TOWN book (graduation work) More and more municipalities change their visual appearance. For a professional approach of their corporate identity however, there are insufficient funds available, indicating a lack of understanding in its value. A manual in broadsheet clearly illustrates the complexity of the theme and includes theory, four case study reviews and the representation of logotypes. I got Martina as a teacher for a private lettering-course. In 2013/14 we met regulary in a group of five persons in my studio.
