3 FEATURED SPEAKERS rick boothman, jd Rick Boothman is an accomplished trial lawyer in Michigan and Ohio, where he spent 22 years in private practice defending individual doctors, professional groups and a wide range of health systems, including the University of Michigan, Kaiser Permanente, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in medical malpractice law suits. In 2001, he left private practice to join the University of Michigan Health System, first as Assistant General Counsel and later as Chief Risk Officer, where he implemented a proactive and principled approach to health system claims. As a trial lawyer, Mr. Boothman was listed in Martindale Hubbell's Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers and carried the highest rating for skill and ethics, AV. He is licensed in Michigan and Ohio. david marx, jd David Marx is the CEO of Outcome Engenuity, a Dallas-based risk management firm which focuses on helping highconsequence organizations develop values-supportive practices and culture. He began his career as a Boeing aircraft design engineer and won the International Federation of Airworthiness s Whittle Award for his development of a human error investigation process used by airlines around the world. Mr. Marx has served as an advisor to the Federal aviation Administration s Human Factors Research Program and to the NASA Space Shuttle Program, and was the principal consultant to NASA in development of their major mishap investigation process. He holds a BS in Mechanical System Engineering (1985) and a Juris Doctor in Law (1997). PANELISTS bruce bailey, bs, mha Bruce Bailey serves as the President & CEO of Georgetown Hospital System, a two-hospital system located in coastal South Carolina. Before assuming his current position, Mr. Bailey served as Associate Administrator at Georgetown Memorial Hospital from , after serving as administrator of Abbeville County Memorial Hospital in Abbeville, South Carolina for six years. His previous experience also includes administrative responsibility at both long term and acute care health facilities in West Virginia, North Carolina and Virginia. eva carman, bs, cphrm Eva Carman is the Risk Manager for Vidant Health in North Carolina, and has over 20 years experience in risk management and patient safety in healthcare facilities ranging from 100 beds to a large academic medical center. She is a member of the University HealthSystem Consortium Risk Council and a Board member for the North Carolina Association for Healthcare Risk Management. larry gray, aic Larry Gray has more than 20 years of experience in insurance-related claims and risk management services, and holds a BSBA degree in Management from Ashland University, Ohio. weldon johnson, jd Weldon Johnson is Barnes Alford s senior partner, and primarily defends hospitals and employed physicians for governmental, charitable, and for-profit facilities throughout South Carolina. He has been selected annuall for listing in South Carolina Super Lawyers in the area of medical malpractice defense and maintains an AV peer review rating. Mr. Johnson has chaired the Healthcare Law Committee of the South Carolina Bar and has served on the South Carolina Bar House of Delegates, as well as two terms on the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline, and is admitted to practice in the state of South Carolina, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. john kassel, jd John Kassel is Theile McVey s senior partner, and represents individuals and families that have suffered injury or death as a result of the negligence of others. He previously served as a Richland County public defender, and worked in the Suggs and Kelly, P.A. firm before opening his own firm in He is admitted to practice in the state of South Carolina, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and currently serves on the Board for the Appleseed Legal Justice Center.
4 laura martinez, rn, bsn, ms, cphrm, fashrm Laura Martinez is the Vice President of Risk Management for MagMutual Patient Safety Institute, and is responsible for managing MagMutual s in-house consulting team and implementing risk management and patient safety programs for MagMutual and Professional Security Insurance Company policyholders. Prior to joining MagMutual, Ms. Martinez held senior level management and consulting roles with Allied World Assurance Company/Darwin and Chubbs Insurance and practiced as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Disability Management Specialist, and Case Manager. shelly rorie, rn, bs, mshi, cphrm Shelly Rorie is the Director of Patient Safety and Risk Management for Palmetto Health in Columbia, SC, where she is responsible for handling claims management in conjunction with their in-house legal office and outside defense firms, as well as assisting with disclosure of significant adverse events, providing educational programs, addressing and managing loss exposures, and promoting cultural change via the Just Culture model. g. murrell smith, jr., jd Murrell Smith is a partner in the Lee, Erter, Wilson, Holler & Smith Law Firm and serves District 67 in Sumter County in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where has served on the House Judiciary Committee, Criminal Laws Subcommittee, Ways and Means Committee, Joint Other Fund Oversight Committee, SC Sentencing Reform Commission, and the House Ethics Return Study Committee. He is admitted to practice in the state of South Carolina. howard west, jd, mha Howard West is the Chief Legal Officer for Palmetto Health, and is the former vice president for corporate services and general counsel at Palmetto Health Richland. He joined the hospital in 1979 as an administrative resident. West earned bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of North Carolina. He also earned a master s degree in hospital administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. West earned his law degree from the University of Virginia.
