1 2015 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS A limited number of full-time summer internships at Blumenthal Performing Arts (BPA) are designed to offer arts management field experience according to each selected intern s knowledge, skill, and interest levels in accordance with the specific needs of BPA departments that participate in the internship program. Selected interns are expected to commit to a minimum service/education program of ten weeks (preferably within the time period between May 18 and August 14). To assist interns with living expenses, BPA provides each with a stipend of $250 per week. BPA interns receive a variety of hands-on experiences while becoming increasingly familiar with the inner workings of a successful performing arts center and business environment from daily operations to long-range planning in a variety of areas which often include (but are not necessarily limited to) Accounting, Box Office Management, Food & Beverage, Development, Education, Human Resources, Marketing, Programming, Facility Rentals, Technical Services, and Volunteer Services. Interns undertake a variety of projects, which provide a challenging educational experience, while rendering genuine service to BPA. Directors and managers provide focused professional supervision and experience to each intern assigned to respective departments. Although interns are expected to devote a minimum of thirty hours per week for the entire duration of their internship program, the scheduling of internship work times can be flexible pending the needs of individual departments. Interns may be eligible for college credit upon completion of our internship program. Interns who wish to/have the ability to receive credit for their internship experience are responsible for meeting registration requirements of their respective colleges as well as informing BPA s Director of Education of necessary evaluation and/or other forms to be completed by appropriate BPA personnel. 2 EXAMPLES OF POTENTIAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ACCOUNTING Interns provide overall support for the Accounting team including but not limited to the following: account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, data mining and migration, and data entry. Candidate must possess good communication skills and be eager to learn. Business Administration or Finance/Accounting majors are encouraged to apply. Candidates who have completed their junior or senior years or are in graduate school are preferred. BOX OFFICE MANAGEMENT / TICKETING Interns are exposed to all aspects of ticket sales & management. Emphasis will be placed on office procedures, sales production and customer service. Activities include learning standard ticketing sales procedures, business specific computer applications, weekly sales reports, and customer relations. All majors are welcome to apply. FOOD & BEVERAGE Interns are exposed to the processes of planning, executing, and overseeing concessions at BPA events and activities. Duties may include assisting in the coordinating and prepping of food and beverage operations. Interns must be available to work nights and some weekends. All majors are welcome to apply. DEVELOPMENT Interns are given an opportunity to explore the many aspects of funding and the arts. Interns may acquire a working knowledge of the diverse funding needs and sources linked to the performing arts in the areas of annual giving, major gift development, sponsorships and grants, special event fund raising, capital campaigns, planned giving, telemarketing and prospect research. All majors are welcome to apply. EDUCATION Interns will have the opportunity to learn how BPA s Education Department seeks to meet its defined, artsenrichment goals for area schools, students and communities. Interns will become familiar with the Education Department s many programs and will perform tasks and assignments designed to increase knowledge, refine skills, increase outreach effectiveness and meet respective academic requirements. All majors are welcome to apply. HUMAN RESOURCES Interns are given the opportunity to learn a wide range of activities related to the operations of an HR department: recruiting, benefits administration, auditing, HR record keeping, research, and employee relations. Requirements include attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and an interest/background in Human Resources as a career. All majors are welcome to apply. PROGRAMMING Interns are given the opportunity to research program options, participate in the selection process, and assist with negotiating and finalizing contracts. In addition, interns may participate in show planning, development and implementation of each program, including show budgets, ticket prices, sales reports and show settlements. All majors are welcome to apply. TECHNICAL SERVICES Interns will have a chance to participate in a wide variety of "behind the-scenes" activities. The internship will include basic lighting, sound, rigging, and carpentry instructions and demonstrations. Along with these basic demonstration sessions, interns will also shadow members of the Technical department during events (e.g. load-ins, performances and load-outs). Requirements include availability to work some nights and some weekends. Theatre/Technical background preferred. All majors are welcome to apply; some experience in technical theater is preferred. VOLUNTEER SERVICES Interns will have the opportunity to learn about and promote BPA s Volunteer Program. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with organizing, scheduling, training and attending events for Blumenthal Volunteers. All majors are welcome to apply. Page 2 of 5
