2 Sudbury and District Brain Injury Association The Brain Injury Association, Sudbury & District (BIASD) is a non-profit registered charity. Our mandate is to enhance the lives of brain injury survivors living with the effects of ABI (acquired brain injury) through various education, awareness and support programs. In Ontario, 44 individuals sustain a brain injury each day. Brain injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for Canadians under the age of 35. Even a seemingly minor head injury, including concussion, can change a person s life incredibly. Sudburians record a higher than average number of brain injuries than the provincial average. Editor's Message Hello Reflections Readers, So much has happened since I joined the Sudbury and District Brain Injury Association Board of Directors in We have a new president, Sean Parsons, whom you met in our last newsletter. We said goodbye to Guy Villeneuve, who has moved on to serve on the board for his daughter's charity, which raises money to run an orphanage in Africa. We acquired many new board members at our Annual General Meeting: Lynda Flintoff, Ruth McDonald, Melanie Pilon, and Bryan Trottier. Welcome to the team. And we acquired an Office Manager, Melissa Kraft. Welcome, Melissa. Our new board is excited to continue working for our members. I, myself, am expecting a baby boy and will be on maternity leave from the board as of November This is a very exciting time for me as well. I hope you enjoy this edition of Reflections, and feel free to give any feedback or contributions to future issues. Let us know what you would like to see! Sincerely, Jana Duncan Newsletter Editor Helmet Campaign Our helmet campaign involved booths at various ski hills and bike shows throughout We always have a great time meeting new people and discussing the benefits of wearing a helmet, whether it be on a ski hill, a bicycle, a skateboard, or a four-wheeler. The BIASD Helmet Awareness Campaign promotes the increased use of helmets in the Sudbury District to reduce injuries due to sporting activities, and to increase awareness and knowledge about the need for helmets in preventing and reducing head injuries and death in children and adults. We supply coupons for $15 off any helmet at participating vendors. For your coupon, please call or us. Additional information can be found at Page 2

3 The DONT Campaign Drive Only Never Text The DONT Campaign Drive Only Never Text is the Ontario-wide Brain Injury Awareness and Prevention Campaign that will remind drivers that texting or talking on a cell phone while operating a motorized vehicle can lead to serious car crashes, brain injuries or death. This campaign is especially active during Brain Injury Awareness Month in June. Additional information can be found at President's Message It s been a great summer of 2014 for us at the Brain Injury Association, as many fun and exciting things have happened. First off, we d like to welcome Melissa Kraft, BIASD s new office coordinator. She joins us thanks to a generous grant from the United Way, and I m sure she ll be a great addition to our team. Secondly, we had another great golf tournament this past July. As this is our main fundraiser every year, it s an important event for us. I think everyone had lots of fun, and enjoyed a great day out of the course. But this event doesn t just happen, it s the result of a lot of hard work by many individuals, all of whom I d like to thank for all the hours they put in. I d especially like to thank Lisette Wirta, who was again the chair of our golf tournament committee, as well as Melissa Kraft. Both of you spent countless hours on this, so thank you very much. Of course, our tournament wouldn t be a success at all without the generous support of all our sponsors. This year as in past years, our Albatross sponsor was Oatley Vigmond. So a very big thank you goes out to them for their continued support of BIASD. I would also mention that our full list of sponsors can be found on our web page at BIASD.ca, so please give it a quick browse and see everyone who makes it possible for BIASD to do what it does. We have a few events that we will be running in the near future, including a Brain Basics course (in conjunction with the Ontario Brain Injury Association), as well as our annual holiday dinner. For more information, please visit our website, which also contains information and resources for survivors, their families and their caregivers, information about our organization and the services we provide, as well as links to other organizations both local and provincial. Thank you for your ongoing support,. Sean Parsons BIASD President Page 3

4 Golf Tourney On Thursday, July 10th, 2014, the Brain Injury Association Sudbury & District hosted its 2014 Annual Golf Challenge with the support of our Albatross Sponsor, Oatley Vigmond Personal Injury Lawyers, and many other appreciated sponsors. The event was a 4-Person Best Ball Scramble and included 18-holes of golf, the cart, dinner, golfer gifts and great prizes. The tournament raised money to support BIASD initiatives in Sudbury. All proceeds from this year s Golf Tournament will help BIASD continue with its various campaigns and support programs. We would like to take this time to thank all of our sponsors and players once again for all of their support. On the cover, one of the two Oatley Vigmond teams poses after one of their holes. Above, the lunch cook staff take a moment to pose during their busy day. And below and right, OMOD and a survivor team pose. What is the Peer Mentoring Support Program and Who Can Participate? Peer Mentoring Support is a program the Brain Injury Association offers free of charge to individuals who have experienced living with a brain injury either personally or as a caregiver. The Mentor will offer support to another person going through similar experiences. The Mentor offers support to the Partner in the form of a weekly contact through phone calls and /or s. Subjects discussed during the contact are limited to what the partner wants to talk about. The partnership is set up for a period of one year but can be adjusted to suit the partner s needs. The mentor is not a professional but a volunteer and a friend who can help the partner deal with the many challenges every brain injury survivor or caregiver deals with on a daily basis. The mentors sign a confidentiality agreement and any discussion is between the two parties involved in the partnership. Many individuals who have participated in the program have found hope, been encouraged, and formed some lasting friendships with their mentors. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Some partners have then become mentors themselves and have gone on to help newly acquired brain injury survivors. For more details about this program contact our Peer Support Coordinator Janine at or at You can also check out our website Page 4

Brain Basics Training BIASD in partnership with OBIA held another successful Brain Basic Course on October 1st and 2nd We had 37 participants and it was held at the Caruso Club. Special thanks to John Kumpf and Steve Noyes for coming to Sudbury and putting on such an informative session. We would also like to thank our survivors and caregivers who took part in a discussions panel that shared their experiences in dealing with an acquired brain injury. Avenue Q Our fundraiser through the Sudbury Theatre Centre was selling tickets to the musical, Avenue Q. Most of us here on the board got a chance to show up for the presentation, and it was an interesting show. Thanks to all who supported us by purchasing tickets to the show. Page 6

11 Acquired Brain Injury Resource Review OBIA Impact Report The OBIA Impact Report 2012 is a report based on a survey of 596 respondents impacted by acquired brain injury. It includes interesting and important statistics on the impact of brain injury on survivors and their caregivers. For more details about how acquired brain injury impacts survivors and caregivers, please see the report in our office or online at Educating Educators About ABI As an educator in the field of special education, I find this resource very interesting. It outlines methods for teaching children and teenagers with Acquired Brain Injuries. You can find this resource at NEOBIN ABI Resource Guide for Sudbury and Manitoulin This resource guide lists resources for people with acquired brain injuries in the Sudbury, Espanola, and Manitoulin Island area. It can be found at FINDS Families in Need Directory of Services for Children with Special Needs This resource guide lists and gives details about resources for children with special needs, including those with acquired brain injuries in the Sudbury area.
