1 Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Health Information Technology Program Goals: Goal: To maintain a Health Information Technology program in accordance with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) standards, providing a high-quality, comprehensive curriculum based on continuous assessment and quality improvement. a. College will maintain accreditation status through the Commission on Accreditation For Health Informatic and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation of AHIMA. a. Faculty will continue to evaluate and develop the HIT program in accordance with AHIMA guidelines. Submit required accreditation materials to AHIMA as required. a. Full accreditation maintained for maximum time period allowed by AHIMA. Mercy College will report on-line annually utilizing the Annual Program Assessment Report (APAR) system. b. One hundred percent of all Domains, Subdomains and Tasks (DST) will be documented on all course syllabi to which they pertain. The program will include up-to-date curriculum that prepares students to enter the profession with practical application of concepts. c. At a minimum all entry-level competencies and knowledge clusters as identified in the AHIMA Model Curriculum for 2006 and Beyond will be included in the curriculum as identified through gap analysis techniques. d. To offer a program that includes a variety of professional practice experiences (PPE). e. Ninety percent of the HIT graduates will express satisfaction with the preparation they received from the program. b. HIT staff will perform quality checks to ensure that all AHIMA items are adequately covered. Advisory Committee members will review curriculum/syllabi yearly. Program Chair will use the DST assessment form for documentation. Input will also be given by students (class evaluations), graduates (survey), faculty (HIT meetings), PPE Supervisors (evaluation) and employers (employer survey). c. Program Chair will use the Knowledge Content Assessment Form for documentation and conduct a Gap Analysis. d. Faculty will document in syllabi tours/site visits/ppe locations in a variety of settings. e. Program Chair will send out Graduate Surveys 6 months post graduation. Students will also fill out Senior Exit Surveys when they complete the program. b. All HIT students will have had education on all AHIMA Domains, Subdomains and Tasks. These DSTs are documented in the syllabi to which they pertain. Suggestions for revisions will be evaluated by the Program Chair and any actions will be documented. c. All students will have had education with the entry-level competencies and knowledge clusters. All knowledge clusters will be documented on the Knowledge Content Assessment form. d. Students will have exposure to traditional and non-traditional HIM experiences. Where possible, the non-traditional experiences will include an Information and Process Services (IPS) rotation within the Mercy Health Partners (MHP) facilities. e. Ninety percent of responding HIT graduates will express satisfaction with the program

Goal: To produce competent entry-level health information management professionals at the Associate degree level in accordance with the American Health Information Management Association s Knowledge Content Clusters of the Model Curriculum for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). a. Students will demonstrate mastery of entry-level competencies as applicable in each class. a. Entry-level competencies relevant to each course will be presented to students at the beginning of the academic term by the HIT instructor. Students and instructors will measure the students mastery through tests, assignments at a variety of cognitive levels and by review of PPE evaluations. a. All HIT students will achieve a grade of C or better in all HIT classes and an overall GPA of 2.0. b. Ninety percent of employers will express satisfaction with their employees who are graduates of the program in terms of demonstrating professional and ethical behavior consistent with the expectations of the profession and the employer. b. Program Chair will conduct Graduate employer surveys (sent 6 months post graduation) and review results. Get input from the Professional Practice Experience site supervisors via PPE evaluation about graduates professional/ethical behavior. b. Ninety percent of employers who respond to the survey will express satisfaction re: professional and ethical behavior on the Graduate Employer Survey. c. Ninety percent of employers will express satisfaction with their employees who are graduates of the program in terms of demonstrating proficiency in the entry-level competencies. d. Ninety percent of students will receive overall favorable evaluations from PPE supervisors. e. Of those HIT graduates eligible to write the national certification exam for the first time, 90% will pass the exam. f. Ninety percent of HIT graduates seeking employment in a HIMrelated field will obtain (HIMrelated) entry-level employment within 6 months of graduation c. Program Chair will conduct Graduate employer surveys (sent 6 months post graduation) and review results. Get input from the Professional Practice Experience site supervisors via PPE evaluation about graduates proficiency in the entry-level competencies. d. Program Chair will document results from PPE evaluation forms. e. The faculty will conduct a mock certification examination following review sessions prior to graduation. Students will understand examination content and be prepared to take certification examination. HIT staff will review results of certification examination. f. Students will have the opportunity for their resumes/cover letters/interviewing techniques reviewed and critiqued by the Director of Student Formation. The Program Chair will review results of the Graduate Survey (sent 6 months post graduation) and other follow-up methodologies. c. Ninety percent of employers who respond to the survey will express satisfaction re: entry-level competencies on the Graduate Employer Survey. d. Ninety percent of students will have favorable PPE evaluations. e. Ninety percent of the graduates taking the examination for the first time will pass it. A faculty review of exam results; review of scores by area and student circumstances will be conducted. Average scores for each DST will be above the national average. The faculty will revise the curriculum to strengthen the program as needed. f. Results will show at least 90% of graduating HIT students, seeking employment, will be employed in a HIM-related field.

3 3. Goal: To pursue excellence in instruction, personnel and facilities. a. HIT course instruction methodologies will provide ample opportunities for students to learn and practice required skills and behavior attributes. a. HIT staff will use a variety of Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) throughout the curriculum. a. A minimum of one (1) CATs will be used in each didactic course. Written results of CATs utilized/students responses will be documented. b. HIT faculty will maintain their currency in their areas of expertise, learn new skills as HIM technology advances, secure advanced credentials as appropriate and meet the AHIMA continuing education requirements. b. Program Chair attendance at state/national education-focused meetings each year and other formal workshops/activities as program budget and schedule permits. Faculty attendance at programs in their teaching specialty areas each year as program budget and schedule permits. b. All faculty will meet/exceed CE hours needed. Attendance or acceptable reason for noncompliance will be documented. Copies of current AHIMA membership cards will be kept in faculty files. c. Each faculty member will be evaluated according to the established College policy. d. Recent HIM technology, computer hardware/software, equipment, up-to-date reference, course materials and adequate supplies will be available in the HIT computer lab for all students enrolled in HIT courses to use. c. Review forms will be provided by the College. Faculty evaluated by students, Program Chair, and by peer evaluation. Program Chair will be evaluated by students, Associate Dean, Allied Health Division and by peer evaluation. d. HIT staff will investigate new equipment/technology at state/national meetings and through research/networking. c. Faculty members will be counseled in areas of weakness and re-evaluated. d. Equipment/technology will be updated as budget allows. In conjunction with the MHP system, E.H.R. applications for the HIT Lab will be available to students.

4 4. Goal: To prepare students to continue their education, formally or informally, in the health information management field. a. Students are reuired to join the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Ohio Health Information Management Association (OHIMA) and the Northwest Ohio Health Information Management Association (NWOHIMA) as student members. a. Program Chair will provide applications to these organizations for students throughout the program. Program Chair will verify membership with these organizations. a. One hundred percent (100%) of the HIT students will have joined the national, state and local associations by the time of graduation. b. Facilitate students attendance at state/local health information management meetings. b. Program Chair will post notices of meetings, call them to the attention of students and rearrange class times and/or give class credit for meeting attendance. b. At least 80% of the HIT students will have attended a state or local meeting by the time of graduation. c. Encourage HIT students to pursue higher degrees in Health Information and related fields. c. Program Chair will provide information to interested students on HIA and other applicable bachelor degree programs in the area. c. Within six years of graduation, a minimum of 10% of each graduation class will pursue advanced degrees.

5 5. Goal: To increase student interest, enrollment and retention in the Heath Information Technology Program. a. The HIT program will have a minimum of 18 applications for admission. a. Admissions & HIT staff will followup on all inquiries and students will be assisted with the application process. Enrollment figures will come from Registrar s office. a. Standard will be met in regards to inquiries and applications accepted. b. One hundred percent of all HIT students shall maintain a C average or better in each course in the curriculum. c. Retain 80% of enrolled HIT students. d. The Program Chair will do academic advisement for 100% of HIT students. b. Students will be counseled as needed during the semester if their performance is below standard in the HIT courses and will be given the opportunity to receive additional instruction at the instructor s discretion. Student grades will be evaluated with the student, if necessary, at the end of each semester. Referrals may be made to the Division of Student Formation for academic assistance. First time college students are required to take Student Success Strategies course. c. Retention rate calculated each year by Registrar. d. The Program Chair will document students progression in their advisement file. b. Students who do not receive a grade of C in a course will be given an opportunity to repeat it. See College Catalog. Counseling, tutoring and/or repeated courses will be documented when indicated. c. Eighty percent of students enrolled in the HIT program will remain enrolled. d. One hundred percent of all HIT students will be academically advised by the Program Chair.

6 6. Goal: To provide curriculum offerings and delivery methods, which address the needs of the program s Community of Interest. a. Program faculty respond to feedback from the community of interest defined as: - Students - Graduates - Faculty - Sponsor Administration - Employers - Public a. Community of Interest needs is a standing agenda item at each Advisory Committee meeting. a. Program faculty respond to identified areas as needed. b. Enrollment trends justify scheduling specific courses and programs. b. Program faculty develop and implement courses and programs. b. Additional course offerings/certificate programs are offered as needed. Division of Continuing Professional Education offers CPE opportunities as budget/schedule allows.

Goal: To engender in the students attitudes the core values of the Sisters of Mercy (excellence, human dignity, justice, mercy, sacredness of life and service) and the Core Abilities (Communication, Critical Thinking, Mathematics, Values and Catholic Identity, Computer Technology, Science, Humanities, Social and Global Consciousness and Life-Long Learning). a. Students will understand the core values of the Sisters of Mercy and the Core Abilities through participation in College sponsored activities. a. HIT staff will encourage students to participate in College sponsored activities by discussing the activities in class and reminding them of upcoming events. a. A minimum of 75% of all HIT students will participate in Collegesponsored activities as documented on an appropriate log sheet. b. Students will also be exposed to pertinent core values/core abilities in the HIT program of study via classroom activities/assignments. b. Program faculty will develop activities/assignments to engender in the students attitudes the core values/core abilities. b. Program faculty will document core values/core abilities on each HIT course syllabus.
