MDM applications can be part of an overall management environment or operate as a standalone system. Integrated management environment Striking a balance in network management between flexibility and centralized control can be difficult. You need to maintain network reliability and flexibility, but also be able to quickly correlate customer or circuit information with a particular connection. MDM meets these requirements by supporting an optional hybrid management model that provides the best of both centralized and distributed management, combining the flexibility and reliability of traditional distributed management with the circuit management and provisioning benefits of centralized management. Supporting a relational database with integration to an Oracle Enterprise RDBMS, Multiservice Data Manager is a powerful integrated management solution allowing highly efficient and rapid response to customer and network needs. MDM Operator Client is a new secure desktop environment that allows certain MDM applications to run on Windows or Solaris workstations. Operator Client accesses the MDM Server for management of network devices and provides improved lower-cost performance for either local or remote access. The client software is deployed from the MDM Solaris server to the client using Java Web Start (JWS) technology, reducing installation and administrative overhead by providing automatic deployments and upgrades. Centralized administration of client userid/password information, including access control permissions for users, is provided by a new centralized User Administration Server infrastructure. 2

3 Comprehensive fault management Highly effective in both large carrier networks and in enterprise environments, the fault management toolset is designed to allow operators to focus on the real problems in the network. The fault management toolset provides a rich suite of fault analysis capabilities for quick problem resolution. Easy-to-use drag-and-drop applications help you detect, analyze, and resolve problems in a data network, including quality of service, equipment, and security. A photo realistic shelf view of the MSS and MPE network elements allows you to easily navigate physical and logical views and provides an integrated environment for rapid nodelevel troubleshooting, integrated with end-to-end connection provisioning and monitoring. This powerful integrated toolset allows you to provide better customer service more quickly and effectively. MDM provides tight integration with the individual network elements and overall network, allowing operators to focus in on the real problems in the network. You can easily view alarms and logs received from MSS and MPE networks and manage alarms with extensive filters. A high-level topology overview of the current network status provides a first alert value-add function using calculated state information to help flag the impact of faults and prioritize operator action. The active alarm list provides a one-toone mapping of the highest-level component alarms to network problems, eliminating alarm flooding and providing a clear view of the problem. Integrated toolsets with in-context functionality, such as the availability of shortcuts to appropriate tools to meet operational workflows for troubleshooting and provisioning, increases effectiveness in resolving network issues. Full physical and logical representation of the shelf view with associated state and alarm information at the operator s fingertips, and single-click access to the drag-and-drop provisioning tool provides simple navigation from alarm notification through remedial action. Surveillance shelf view powerful fault management The powerful surveillance shelf view integrates node-level troubleshooting with nodal provisioning via in-context launching of multiple tools, providing an efficient and responsive fault management environment for network operators. 3

4 Fault management of select SNMP devices Service providers or enterprises with multiple device types in their networks can simplify fault management operations by using the SNMP Surveillance Adapter within Multiservice Data Manager. The SNMP Surveillance Adapter provides the capability to integrate selected SNMP devices into the fault management applications within MDM through add-on device integration cartridges. Network operators can display and monitor faults from integrated SNMP, MSS, and MPE devices. Functionality is also provided to allow operators to support additional SNMP devices through MDM s generic SNMP integration capabilities. Figure 3. Real-time and historical performance monitoring MDM s Data Viewer allows realtime monitoring of performance metrics as well as graphing and replaying of historical data for MSS, providing fault operators with an intuitive representation of network performance data. Performance monitoring Quickly identify network performance problems and analyze historical performance using the MDM data viewer functionality. (Figure 3) Data viewer provides real-time monitoring of various performance metrics from network elements by collecting component status information and displaying it as graphics and text in tabular format. Information collected can be saved to CSV format files for future analysis or playback. The data viewer is also capable of collecting and displaying information from SNMP-managed devices. Service management capabilities Rapid correlation of network resources to customers, especially in a trouble situation, is imperative in order to increase service satisfaction and customer confidence. The MDM circuit management application assists network operators in associating network information to customers as well as provisioning and troubleshooting services on an MSS network. (Figure 4) It starts with the ability to correlate network resources to the service and to allow easy identification of the service and/or the end customer, while maintaining this information centrally in an industry-leading relational database for rapid access. Service management provides management functions for virtual circuits and provides better visibility of services. 4

UNI NNI UNI Circuit The service management capabilities and tools provided in MDM allow operators to: Take advantage of robust service provisioning tools, which facilitate the provisioning of end-to-end connections and, for selected services, support direct updates of the database information. Query circuit information from the database to quickly identify customers or network resources impacted by a problem, view related information for that circuit, and view details about a specific circuit including related customer and circuit component information (retrieved in real time from the nodes). Reduce time to troubleshoot a service issue, with a click of the mouse, using the Circuit Viewer for selected service types. With Circuit Viewer, an operator can obtain the endto-end state of a connection, see statistical information for circuit components, and perform a connection trace for visualization of the current path and components used for the circuit. This application allows the operator to quickly determine the path of a connection across the network and the network status along that path. Enhanced Multiservice Switch configuration management MSS and MPE configuration management capabilities continue to be enhanced with MDM s powerful network administration tools and provisioning capabilities. MDM provides user-friendly graphical tools for provisioning components, and selected services on Multiservice Switches. MDM s provisioning system provide flexible views to define, edit, and display service data for MSS elements. You can create customized user interfaces for provisioning and perform cut-and-paste procedures to simplify repetitive provisioning steps and reduce keyboard errors. (Figure 5) These provisioning tools include: 5

6 Nodal Provisioning tool, a comprehensive tool that provides a powerful, easy-to-use Java-based GUI that allows drag-and-drop configuration designed primarily to configure node, software, and shelf components easily and efficiently. Provisioning is made easier and more accurate by using custom forms allowing integration into existing operational processes. Using these custom forms or templates, an operator can apply multiple configurations with ease. Simultaneous users can perform nodal provisioning tasks through the embedded provisioning tool in Surveillance Shelf View. Service Provisioning is a suite of easy-to-use graphical tools that support the provisioning of services, such as frame relay, ATM PVCs, SPVCs, FRATM, and IP-VPNs. Service provisioning allows point-and-click end-to-end provisioning of services across multiple nodes, reducing service provisioning time and increasing operator effectiveness. Performance and accounting data collection and reporting Data collection and billing are the basis of a service provider s revenue stream any loss of this information can have serious consequences. Data collection is essential for proactively forecasting network requirements, understanding network performance, and generating usage accounting records to send to downstream billing processors. The Management Data Provider (MDP) is the bulk data collection and processing system for network accounting, statistical, and other information spooled by the MPE node or MSS switch. Statistics of raw usage levels and value-added information such as peak watermark and trunk utilization that are spooled on switch are examples of data collected. This information gives service providers a variety of tariffing options allowing service differentiation, while supplying others with the information required to properly analyze network performance. The data is then correlated into historical records that can be customized for external systems handling billing, customer network and service management, network planning, and service analysis and reporting.
