In this newsletter you will find important dates, information about faculty and their research activities, spotlights on our faculty and current students, and an invitation to make your own contributions to the newsletter. If you are new to our programs, make sure that you check our D2L counselor education site for important dates, job announcements, certification requirements, and internship or graduate assistantship opportunities. The more you get in- volved in the more experience you can acquire and the better your resume will look! Also, make sure you schedule an appointment with your advisor to ensure you have registered for all of the pre-requisites needed to stay on track. Finally, we want to congratulate all of our December graduates. We are sure you will do great things! Works in Progress Student Spotlight Have You Met Joe Dagney? New Program Sparking Excitement! The Department of Counselor Education now offers a Master of Science degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program meets the educational requirements for counselor licensure in all fifty states, as well as the Federal government requirements to work with veterans and individuals receiving Medicare or Medicaid. Completion of this program will also qualify graduates to immediately sit for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) examination. The clinical mental health program will effectively prepare graduates for a broad range of career possibilities, including working in community settings, hospitals, educational institutions, VA treatment centers, and private practice settings. The 60-credit hour program consists of: Core counseling courses Clinical mental health specialty courses 700 hours of field work Candidates can apply online at Applications are due February 1 st. The officers of the Delta Tau Kappa Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota invite you to become an active member of our West Chester University chapter. CSI is an international honor society for counseling students. They strive to promote academic and professional success in all of their members. Membership eligibility requirements: Students must have completed at least one semester of full-time graduate coursework (9 credits) in a counselor education degree program. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. To become a member visit for more information. You can apply online with a credit card, then pay local dues by check. Annual National Dues are $50, chapter dues are $10. 3 DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELOR EDUCATION PAGE 3 Counselor Education takes on Philly Let s hope Philadelphia was ready for our Department s accomplishments! The Association for Counselor Education and Supervisors (ACES) conference was held in Philadelphia this October and many of our Counselor Education faculty collaborated and presented together! Dr. Snyder and Dr. Zubernis presented on case conceptualizations and effective interventions as well as the application of the T/C model to anxiety disorders. They will also be presenting on these topics at the Pennsylvania Counseling Association annual conference. Dr. Alessandria and Dr. Owens presented a session on the cultural ramifications of differences in digital communication across generations. Dr. Alessandria and Dr. Neale-McFall presented a session entitled Ethical Practices when Bridging the Digital Divide: The Effects of Culture, Pegagogy and Technology. Dr. Alessandria co-presented a session with colleagues entitled Crossing Borders: International Perspectives on Cross-cultural Clinical Supervision and Counseling. Conferences: Hodes in Higher Education Dr. Hodes copresented a session on starting campus conversations of diversity in May 2015 at the PSSHE Student Affairs Conference. She is also presenting on facul- ty collaboration for student success at the PCPA Conference in October 2015 in Gettysburg, PA. Her presentation is titled Creating a Winning Team: Working with Faculty to Enhance Student Success. Also in October, Dr. Hodes copresented an ACPA webinar entitled Creating Change: A Tempered Approach.

4 PAGE 4 PCA Presentations Dr. Owens, Graduate Assistant Jen Toby, Dr. Neale McFall, and Dr. Dickinson presented The Internet and Pos rauma c Growth: Helping Adolescents Find Effec ve Coping Strategies in the Digital Age. Dr. Owens will also be co presen ng at PCA on a session en tled Self- Care and the Supervisory Process: Making Ourselves Available to Personal and Professional Growth Publications Galore! Dr. Dickinson and Dr. Parsons are currently under contract with Sage Publication to write a book on ethics for human service providers. Entitled Ethical Practices in the Human Services: Beyond Knowing to Being Ethical, it will be out in 2016! Dr. Hodes is on a roll in 2015 with three publications. She wrote an article called Bridging the Academic and Student Affairs Divide: Gaining Perspective to Create Partnerships which was published in the ACPA Developments Journal. In the Journal of College Transition and Orientation, she has an article titled Orientation Shadow Day: An Educational Experience for Graduate Students Preparing for Careers in Student Affairs. Finally, Dr. Hodes was first author for the article Go for the Win: A Collaboritive Model for Supporting Student-Athletes which was published in The Learning Assistance Review. Dr. Owens, Dr. Neale-McFall, and Graduate Assistant Jen Toby s article The Costs of Caring: Mitigating the Challenges of the Helping Relationship Through Clinical Supervision was published in the Journal of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association. 5 DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELOR EDUCATION PAGE 5 Works in Progress Dr. Neale-McFall, Graduate Assistant Jen Toby, and Dr. Owens are continuing their year-long work on a grant from the Pennsylvania state legislature to examine school counseling resources across the state. Graduate Assistant Kelsey Davis is currently writing a middle school conflict resolution Best Practices article under the supervision of Dr. McCoy. The article will compile successful strategies from empirical research for counselors working with conflict resolution in middle school settings. They will be submitting the finished article in Spring 2016 to the American Counselor Association s VISTAS. Way To Go! Special congratulations to Dr. Alessandria for recently being promoted to Full Professor! Important Dates! Comprehensive Exam Date: Field Contracts are due Friday November 20th Seal of Importance October 23-25th Classes will not be held on Wednesday November 25th and Thursday November 26th for Thanksgiving. Classes will resume Monday November 30th Finals begin Tuesday December 8th and end Friday December 11th

On September 9th, 2015, Higher Education Counseling/Student Affairs graduate students Aaron Gottlieb, Ariel Armstrong, Jahmai Fisher, and Tom Pomenti volunteered at the WCU Mental Health Check -In Day at Sykes Student Union. The event, coordinated by Sherry Mendez and the Office of Health and Wellness, drew a total of 45 students last year. In contrast to last year, this year saw 50 students come in within just the first 15 minutes of the event. In total, 144 students completed the screening process. As volunteers, Aaron, Ariel, Jahmai, and Tom greeted students, distributed screening The officers of Chi Sigma Iota, Delta Tau Kappa Chapter have been working hard to prepare for an exciting academic year. Their goals include establishing committees for Outreach, Visual Media, Events, and Mentoring, increasing involvement with the Mentoring Program*, hold a food drive for Chester County Food Bank, create goody bags for students taking COMPS, subsidize Honors Cords for graduating members (cost= $5), bring in a guest speaker to discuss Mindfulness, and particiforms, and directed students to one of the psychologists from the Counseling Center. The psychologists reviewed their forms, engaged in discussion, and told students about services offered. While not necessary, they were also available to safely escort students to the Counseling Center who needed more immediate care. Jahmai said, "It was great to see so many students attend because it lets us know there's an increasing awareness surrounding mental health on campus.

7 Have You Met Joe Dagney? Professor Dagney is new to the Counselor Education Department! He was born in Philadelphia, PA and was raised in Cape May County, NJ. He is one of six children in his family. Mr. Dagney attended Wildwood Catholic High School and joined the United Sates Air Force after graduation. He proudly served his country for over 20 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. He held numerous positions in the Air Force and his last two assignments were in Pennsylvania; he served at the 111 th Fighter Wing in Willow Grove and finally at the 193d Special Operations Wing in Middletown. He has earned three Associates Degrees from the Community College of the Air Force, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from Park University and a Master of Education, Counseling, Secondary Education from West Chester University. He has earned credits towards a doctoral degree at Immaculata University in Educational Leadership. Mr. Dagney has been a School Counselor for the Chester County Intermediate Unit for twelve years. He has worked at the county s three career and technical education schools and is currently working at the Chester County Technical College, Pickering Campus. Welcome to the Department, Mr. Dagney!
