I have learnt from world-class professors in the field of international security, met with Former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice, and conducted research for a range of projects exploring the role of non-state actors in shaping global security. As an international student, I could not have asked for a better experience in the United States.
6 Master of Arts Degree Programs The Master of Arts in Confl ict Resolution degree program focuses on the study and application of alternative theories, various types of bargaining and negotiation techniques and related ethical issues, examined through selected cases of confl ict. Through this program, students learn how to manage and improve social patterns and policy choices between individuals, within organizations and across cultures. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines international studies, communications, management, social work, professional psychology, theology and law, drawing on DU faculty across these academic units. The MA in Confl ict Resolution is administered through the Confl ict Resolution Institute. For more information about this program and application requirements, visit the Confl ict Resolution Institute s website at The Masters in Global, Finance, Trade and Economic Integration (GFTEI) provides students with a multidisciplinary, policy-focused examination of the global economy. The career paths associated with the degree include economic policy, trade, financial or risk analysis, project management, program evaluation, or a variety of positions within international business. Recent alumni work at organizations like the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor, Standard and Poors, the World Bank, and more. The Masters in International Administration provides students with a foundation of the management skills (people, programs or policies) required to become a leader in a nonprofit or public sector organization in an international context. Graduates of the program generally find themselves working with nonprofit, government and international organizations. Recent alumni work at organizations like USAID, International Rescue Committee (Sierra Leone), Habitat for Humanity International (Jordan), and more. The Masters in International Human Rights provides students with the opportunity to explore issues of human dignity while critically examining the norms, processes and institutions designed to promote and protect human rights in our globalizing world. The program is unique among its peers for its interdisciplinary nature, linking human rights to development, health, security and humanitarian assistance, and for its emphasis on theory and practice. Recent alumni of the program work at American Red Cross, Human Rights First, Human Rights Watch, and more. The Masters in International Security provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of the international security environment of the 21st
7 century. Students focus on topics including strategy, foreign policy, intelligence, homeland security, military analysis, regional security and confl ict resolution. After completing the program, students are prepared for careers in research, management, and policy level positions in governmental and non-governmental organizations. The program prepares students for careers in diplomacy or other parts of the public, private or nonprofit sectors. Additionally, the degree works well for students who wish to pursue a PhD. Xian Zhang 13 MA International Development Getting to work alongside a political officer in my internship has been an invaluable experience. The breadth of exposure I ve received - from writing cables to meeting with mission contacts - has helped me gain much insight into the multifaceted responsibilities and roles that Foreign Service Officers fulfill. A panel of military experts, including former Chief of Staff of the United States Army and Josef Korbel School alumnus, General George W. Casey (Ret.), discuss lessons learned since the start of the war in Iraq.
8 U.S. Peace Corps Programs In cooperation with the U.S. Peace Corps, the Coverdell Fellows Program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers provides financial assistance to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers pursuing any of the six 90-credit-hour MA degrees at the Josef Korbel School and provides opportunities to gain practical work experience through the field practicum component. Within the past five years, over 150 Josef Korbel School students were Peace Corps Volunteers prior to their studies, creating one of the largest Peace Corps communities in the country. The U.S. Peace Corps Master s International Program provides a unique opportunity for students to bridge academic and practical experiences. Additionally, students who pursue our MA in International Administration, International Development or Global Finance, Trade and Economic Integration prior to serving in the U.S. Peace Corps receive financial assistance. Doctoral Degree Program The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in International Studies degree program provides advanced, interdisciplinary study of international politics, comparative politics, international political economy and/or political theory with ample opportunities for customization, creativity and exploration. Close faculty mentoring ensures students pursue a productive path of study, whether the goal is a career in teaching, research or government. The program requires coursework, written and oral comprehensive examinations and successful completion and defense of a dissertation. 10 Internships & Careers At the Josef Korbel School, you have access to a career office exclusively devoted to serving Josef Korbel School graduate students and alumni. The Office of Career and Professional Development assists students in achieving their academic, professional and personal goals by providing: Professional development through career coaching and targeted skill development and training; Career education through courses, workshops and events; and Connections between students, alumni and employers through targeted and proactive marketing and relationship management. The Josef Korbel School s Office of Career and Professional Development offer students a number of programs. These include: Career coaching Staff members meet with students to help them identify internships and career opportunities by developing action plans, cultivating professional relationships through networking, building targeted employer lists and reviewing application materials. Professionals in residence Alumni and friends of the Josef Korbel School are invited to present and discuss personal experiences in their career searches, perspectives on current trends and opportunities in their fields and recommendations on distinguishing skills, characteristics and experience needed to enter the field. Recent presenters have worked with a variety of employers, including U.S. Department of Commerce, Human Rights Watch, Population Services International, NATO, Catholic Relief Services, Inter-American Development Bank and International Rescue Committee. Alumni career network Over 180 alumni are members of the Alumni Career Network through which current students and other alumni may contact the members for networking and professional development purposes. This successful program is a crucial tool for current students and alumni to use when developing their internship and career searches and a vital resource for creating their professional network. Career connections program Washington, D.C., New York City & Boston Each year, this program provides students with opportunities in Washington D.C., New York City and Boston to gain broad overviews of job markets, meet employers in their field and network with key alumni and employers.
11 Professional skills workshops The office conducts and sponsors skills development and enhancement workshops on topics such as policy brief writing, program management and grant writing. On campus career events The office coordinates many career events to connect students with employers, including employer information and recruitment sessions, panels, presentations and forums. Two special events, the Global Security Career Fair and the Colorado-based International NGO Networking Forum, host employers on campus to meet students and to market current volunteer, internship and career opportunities. Utilizing the International Futures model, with its impressive capability for exploring and understanding the world and its potential futures, along with the opportunity to interact with other bright and talented researchers, has complemented the world-class education I received from the Korbel School.
12 Centers & Institutes The Josef Korbel School is home to a number of research centers and institutes that add depth and breadth to the School s commitment to integrating teaching, research and practical problem solving. Students gain enriching research and internship opportunities through these centers, where they work alongside and network with world-renowned scholars, practitioners and experts. Faculty The Josef Korbel School s internationally respected faculty conducts world-class teaching and research. Our professors are as invested in their students, courses and mentoring as they are in their research. Furthermore, our degree directors are focused on the real world, identifying new employment opportunities in their respective specialties and new skills employers in those fields demand. Our school also benefits from the expertise of practitioners, adjuncts and visiting professors from around the world. Students The Josef Korbel School offers students an intimate, enriching environment for sharing concepts that reach beyond conventional thought. You ll be challenged in your studies and inspired by the caliber of ideas that spill out of the classroom and into the School community. The Korbel experience extends beyond the classroom students are active within the global community and do not wait until graduation to begin impacting the world. Our student organizations provide additional opportunities for intellectual interaction, volunteerism and personal growth. For example, members of the Global Health Affairs student group Santé find creative ways to help raise money for Partners in Health (PIH), an international global health organization whose mission is to provide health care options for the poor, and the Student Art Council sponsors an annual photo exhibit showcasing the photography of students who have participated in internships, travel or study abroad.
