1 ANNUALREPORT OURMISSION SALISBURY-ROWAN COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY PROVIDES SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS, CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TO ENHANCE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE AND PROMOTE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-SUFFICIENCY.
2 GUIDING PRINCIPLES«The Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency has developed the following principles to guide and direct the organization s work. The principles help determine how the organization will work together to successfully accomplish the agency s efforts in the community. LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR WILLIAM PETE KENNEDY Dear Friends, Last year, Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency effectively administered over $13.5 million to assist families living at or below the poverty level in our six-county region. Thanks to our committed staff and partners, we were able to overcome the challenges of a federal 5.27% sequestration cut and deliver the same level of services that our children and families deserve through the Head Start program. As board members and staff we appreciate the level of trust that the community places in us to help accomplish the Agency s vision that everyone will have opportunity for success in life. We have many accomplishments to celebrate this year. Head Start continues to provide a quality education to our children and much needed services to help families achieve their goals. While the economy remains a challenge we are finding that the demands for assistance continue to increase, however, we remain committed to our mission of helping our families move beyond temporary assistance to self-sufficiency. Next year Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency will be commemorating 50 years of helping people and changing lives. We are appreciative of our many supporters and partners and hope that you will continue your support. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STAN WILSON THANK YOU Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency (SRCAA) is very grateful for the support and hard work of our volunteers, funders and staff. We also thank the families who put their trust in SRCAA to help guide them to achieve their dreams and goals. Exactly what difference did SRCAA make last year? As you read the annual report you will learn of our many successes. «You ll learn about Shaqueal Edwards who participated in SRCAA youth development program, worked at Habitat Re-Store through a limited internship and received his GED and was accepted into the business program at Kings College. «You ll read about Joy McEntyre Blakeney a Head Start alum who graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree in Nursing Administration and is working at the Salisbury VA Medical Center. «You ll learn about Kendall Frye, a single mother who enrolled in SRCAA s Family Self-Sufficiency Program, attended Rowan Cabarrus Community College and obtained a Pharmacy Technician Certification. In reading this annual report you will see a collection of success stories. Despite the uncertainty of this economy, we stand ready to not only maintain our current levels of service but to seek to develop and implement new programs to meet the changing needs of the community. «ACCOUNTABILITY «ADVOCACY «COLLABORATION «COMMUNICATION «CUSTOMER SERVICE «INTEGRITY «PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN «RESPECT «TECHNOLOGY «TRANSPARENCY
3 SRCAA SUCCESS STORIES Joy McEntyre Blakeney, a Head Start alum graduated Magna Cum Laude on May 11, 2013 from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree in Nursing Administration. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and Golden Key International Honor Society. She also received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002 from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Joy is currently working at the Salisbury VA Medical Center and Bayada Home Health. OUR VISION«Everyone will have opportunity for success in life. Candace Miller enrolled in SRCAA s Family Self-Sufficiency program. Her immediate goal for Candace was to obtain full time employment, preferably with benefits. Working with her Family Development Specialist, Candace assessed her strengths and became an entrepreneur becoming the owner of Southern Charm, a commercial and residential cleaning company. Candace has experienced steady growth in her company. Willie McCoy III participated in SRCAA s the Family Self-Sufficiency and Career & Education Training Services programs. He obtained skills necessary for school, work readiness, labor knowledge, occupational information and job search techniques. He worked during the summer with the City of Salisbury Fired Department and received excellent performance reviews. Willie received his Associates Degree at Rowan Cabarrus Community College and continued his education at East Carolina University and received his Bachelor of Social Work degree and is employed full time as a Family Crisis Counselor. Parent of the Year Award Recipient Kendall Frye, a single mother enrolled in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program in June Kendall had been out of work for several months and was receiving unemployment benefits upon enrollment. While making her family goals, Kendall decided to attend Rowan Cabarrus Community College to obtain a Pharmacy Technician Certification. Kendall completed her course & final examination and earned her Pharmacy Technician Certification. At this point, Kendall was ready to put her training to work. She found a new job with a substantial salary increase. Vivianna Martinez Hernandez was named Parent of the Year for SRCAA Head Start/Early Head Start Mrs. Ms. Hernandez has a 3 year old who attends the Westside HS Center. Mrs. Hernandez serves as the President of the Parent Committee, Secretary Chairperson of the Area Advisory and is a member of the HS Policy Council. Mrs. Hernandez said the following about her Head Start experience, I have learned that Head Start is not just about our children but our families as well. Not all parents take the initiative to be at every parent meeting or get involved. That motivates me to do more, not just for my loved ones but for all in need...let s make stronger families that will eventually lead to stronger communities and a better society as a whole. Mrs. Hernandez was selected as the 1 st Runner Up at the annual North Carolina Head Start Association Conference. Shaqueal Edwards worked with SRCAA s Career & Education Training Services and received his GED, participated in a limited internship at Habitat Re-Store and was accepted into the business program at Kings College.
4 Partnership in Action SRCAA and Thomasville City Schools Students in the agency s Career Education and Training Services (CETS) program and staff worked together on a community service project to benefit the Food for Thought program in Salisbury. Food for Thought is a community backpack program that provides weekend meals for children who rely on the school lunch program for nutritious meals. The Thomasville Head Start partnered with the City of Thomasville High School s Early Childhood 1& 2 programs. The partnership focused on literacy and celebrated the event in December. To mark the event, Thomasville City Schools donated 500 books and a handmade bookcase to the center s Literacy Program. The event was attended by the Davidson Superintendent, High School Principals, Instructors, members of the Thomasville City School Board and SRCAA staff. In one hour, the CETS group bagged 72 meals containing non-perishable items at Saint Luke s Episcopal Church, the Food for Thought headquarters. Later in the week the grocery bags would be put into backpacks along with fruit and milk for distribution to 24 elementary school children to take home for the next three weekends. SRCAA could not accomplish its mission without its partners. Thank you for your all of your help and support. (704) W. Bank Street Salisbury, NC
