1 Kansas Council for Workforce Education Board Meeting, August 3, 2009, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Wichita Hyatt/Osage 207 Meeting Minutes ( draft) Members Present: Shirley Antes Ben Hayes Bill Osborn Steve Porter Members Absent: Duane Custer Rob Edleston Lavonne Gerritzen Clark Jacobs Tina Logan Darcy McGrath Guests: Chenoa Bosch Agenda Attached Welcome/Attendance/Introductions: called the meeting to order at 7: 15 a.m. and welcomed attendees. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the April 9, 2009 Board meeting were approved as submitted (attached). Reports/Updates: Treasurer: No report Approval of Bills: It was moved and seconded to approve an invoice to Hutchinson Community College in the amount of $1620 and a sub invoice in the amount of $675 for the New Instructor Seminar. Motion passed. VP Legislation: No report Membership: Shirley Antes distributed current membership lists. It was noted that several institutions have not yet paid memberships, but that it could be that some memberships have been processed. Partnerships/Collaboration: Steve Porter reported on the successful New Instructor Seminar. The group discussed the possibility of a follow session, possible list of topics, etc. KCWE Awards: Awardees were announced with presentations to occur during the Business Luncheon. Approval of Slate of officers for : Cindy presented the slate of officer. They will be officially installed at the Business Luncheon. Professional Development Collaborations: Ben Hayes outlined a facilitated discussion to occur later in the day. Cindy encouraged members to attend. Annual Meeting Agenda Review: 2008/2009 Accomplishments: Cindy distributed an handout entitled KCWE Accomplishments for The group discussed upcoming events and direction for KCWE for the coming year.
2 Conference Details (facilitator assignments, etc): Bill Osborn outlined the KCWE strand sessions scheduled for the afternoon and indicated that facilitator assignments sheets will be distributed at the Business Luncheon. New Business: Fall Workshop (October 26 & 27): Conference planning is underway with KBOR staff. Pat Altwegg is the primary contact. A Carl Perkins workshop will be included in the conference. Action Items Minutes of the last meeting were approved as submitted. provided the Treasurer s report in the absence of Tina Logan. Account balance as of this date is $13, Reports/Updates Legislation: A legislative report was not available. KCWE Membership: The board reviewed the current membership list. Regional Directors were encouraged to make contact with institutions from their respective regions to seek memberships for FY2010. An to the membership will be sent within the next week to seek memberships for FY2010. Partnerships/Collaboration: Steve Porter reported that a KCWE New Instructor Seminar will be held July 23 & 24. Old Business Conference Planning (August): The Board discussed the KCWE Awards to be presented at the August conference. The board agreed to extend the nomination period to May 1 and encouraged the institutions to nominate someone. Cindy will send an reminder to institutions. A board meeting will be held at the August Conference on Monday, August 3 from 7:00-9:00 and the awards luncheon and election of officers will be held at the luncheon at noon. KCWE will have four conference presentations. KBOR would like KCWE s participation to the degree possible. Discussion took place on the challenges of getting people to attend and getting people in the field to present. Further discussion will occur at the next board meeting. Report from Blake Flanders Blake updated the board on TEA activities including: TEA Marketing meeting Presentation by Ft. Riley at TEA meeting and the need to network with them on training opportunities for military personnel and their family members Program Alignment project Funding distribution for FY10 approved by TEA Competitive grant opportunities will be going out (i.e. community job training grants) Collaboration between institutions is being encourages Encouraged institutions to stay in touch with local WIA boards
