What is Cloud Computing? Derived from the Wikipedia definition: Cloud computing refers to a delivery model of IT services whereby the provider delivers the services (such as software applications) via the Internet, which are accessed from a Web browser. The business software and data are stored (hosted) on servers at a remote location.

Different Types of Cloud Computing Software as a Service Platform as a Service Infrastructure as a Service
Different Types of Cloud Computing Software as a Service Public cloud Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail SalesForce.com QuickBooks Online
Different Types of Cloud Computing Platform as a Service Primarily used by application developers Public cloud Google App Engine: lets anyone build apps on Google s infrastructure Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
Different Types of Cloud Computing Infrastructure as a Service Public cloud Hosting servers and desktops in the cloud Alliance Technologies provides these services. Case Studies: YMCA of Greater Des Moines David P. Lind and Associates
Why Cloud Computing? Possible Advantages: The cost of buying, installing and supporting a computer network can be reduced. You gain greater flexibility in accessing your computer network (files, applications, etc.) remotely and from various devices (laptop, ipad, Blackberry, etc). You gain the benefit of having built-in disaster recovery and data backup. You can purchase cheaper workstations (devices) and get them to last longer since the computing "power" is in the cloud and not on the individual workstation. Since you are paying for the service like a utility, it's cheaper and easier to add and remove workers from your network. You avoid hefty network upgrade costs. You no longer need to pay for someone to maintain an on-premise network (server, firewall, patch management, backups, etc.) Source:
Should we use the Cloud? Cloud computing: a matter of buy vs. rent Onsite: Microsoft Exchange ( ) 10 users Buy an Exchange server: $6500 (physical server, OS, serer CALs) Office/Outlook client software: $4500 (Office is about $450/user) Install: $4000 (about 40 hours of work) Support: $2000 per year Total estimate over 3 years: $21,000 (after 3 years hardware goes out of warranty) Cloud: Microsoft Hosted Exchange ( ) 10 users $5 per user per month Internet Service: $XX/month Total estimate over 3 years: $ years buy new
Why Not Cloud Computing? Possible Disadvantages: Dependent on the Internet Internet service and Internet speeds Depending on the type of cloud service, cloud may not be a good fit Large files and applications: graphic design, video streaming, etc. May not know where your data resides May not get local support May not always be cheaper in the long run

Customer Feature Cloud Computing David P. Lind & Associates (DPL &A) About DPL&A David P. Lind & Associates (DPL&A) is an independent employee benefits consulting firm focusing on group benefit plans for employers in Iowa and surrounding states. DPL&A employs a full-time staff of 5 people and is located in Clive, Iowa. DPL&A has converted their IT infrastructure to Alliance Technologies' hosted "cloud" service. Before Moving to the Cloud IT environment consisted of a mix of 13 computing devices (PCs and laptops) On-site server with various software packages such as Microsoft Office and Goldmine (CRM). As their technology became outdated, they were looking at large capital expenditures for replacing old hardware (server and computers), upgrading software applications and migrating Operating Systems from Windows XP to Windows 7. Before moving to the cloud, DPL&A analyzed how much of their staff s time was lost due to IT support issues and downtime on a yearly basis. They determined they were losing about hours per year of staff time trouble shooting IT, which equated to approximately $30,000 - $50,000 in potential lost revenue per year. By transitioning to the cloud and moving their IT resources off-site, DPL&A figures to gain back a lot of this lost productivity.
Customer Feature Cloud Computing David P. Lind & Associates (DPL &A) Mark Becker, DPL&A The primary driver for us was cost it was unsustainable for us to exhaust that much time and money for an office of 5 people. The biggest thing we'll gain from moving to the cloud is recovery of our time. Not having to spend our own time on IT issues is a big benefit.
Customer Feature Cloud Computing David P. Lind & Associates (DPL &A) After Moving to the Cloud DPL&A has access to their server resources and business applications through the cloud: Microsoft Exchange for and shared calendar Microsoft Dynamics CRM Access Time and Billing database Microsoft Office applications File sharing and printing DPL&A employees are able to connect remotely to their individual hosted workstation from any Internet-connected device. This new method of accessing and sharing information has provided the following benefits: Improved remote accessibility. Connecting directly to a cloud desktop is much smoother than their previous VPN connection. Longer life out of aging computers. Because their data and applications are hosted in the cloud and not on the individual workstation, DPL&A can extend the life of their old machines. No capital expense to buy a new physical server. Renting space in the cloud takes the place of buying a new server. Managed backup service no more on-site tape backups to deal with. Increased data security as their new environment is hosted in a data center. No more time spent on-site taking care of PC and server maintenance and upgrades.
Customer Feature Cloud Computing David P. Lind & Associates (DPL &A) Mark Becker, DPL&A We now pay a fixed monthly fee per user and have access to all of the IT resources and support we need. Another benefit of running out of the cloud is that we re always on the latest version of everything and don t have to maintain or update applications anymore.
