4 Page02 LM Around Town WINING&DINING RESTAURANT REVIEWS By Quisine Queen CAMPO DI FIORE Campo di Fiore is hidden away in a park behind the US Embassy, and what a great find it is! As it is always packed and difficult to get a table, it is obviously not a secret that this is a very popular place to meet and eat with friends. In fact it is very family friendly as the enclosed play park next to the restaurant is ideal for leaving the kids to play while you eat. Day and night, people stroll by with prams, riding bicycles or with dogs on a lead, and stop and chat to seated diners, the restaurant just has a great ambiance. The Gianni s ice cream parlour a ached to the restaurant is also a wonderful idea for children and adults alike. All the tables are outside under umbrellas, so business must suffer when it rains. (con nues below) Pasta choices of gnocchi, spaghe, penne, tagiatelle and ravioli, with a range of sauces, but the Gnocchi with Gorgonzola with a cream sauce has to be one of the best I have had, but the Boscaiola Sauce with Cream, Mushrooms and Ham at 290Mt is a steal. Try the Vitello Tonnato at 330Mt, which is Sliced Veal with Tuna and Capers, or the Grilled Salmon at 410Mt. Start your meal by sharing one of their square pizzas. A basic square is 130Mt and add Tuna and Olives or Rocket and Mozzarella for an extra 30-50Mt, it s all good. Also try the an pasto pla ers which are good value for money and full of pleasant and hidden surprises and great for sharing. The wine list is a let down though with just the usual wines on offer. Service can be slow when it is very busy, but the kitchen is ny for the number of covers to be served. Although when you are with a group of friends, and with so much ac vity going on around you, the wait is not so no ceable. 5 Page03 LM Around Town Pub Breaking some guitar strings Marrabenta is a rough and tumble urban dance sound that found its existence during the colonial days of Lourenço Marques, today s Maputo. The name Marrabenta comes from the Portuguese word arrabenter which means to break. It is a reference to the quickly snapping strings of home-made guitars by their enthusias c players. The first Marrabenta ar sts, like Fany Pfumo and Dilon Djindi, started in In the 1980s a new genera on of Marrabenta musicians such as Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Mocambique ensured that this infec ous rhythm remained popular.. Marrabenta was not only meant for dancing and entertainment, it also played a role in the struggle for independence from Portuguese rule. Ar sts sang in African languages, instead of the state approved tongue of Portuguese. Another famous Marrabenta band is Ghorwane who gained interna onal recogni on when they recorded an album with renowned Bri sh musician Peter Gabriel s record label in the early 1990s. During the civil war the founder of the band was murdered. David Macuacua, also from the band Ghorwane, is one of the ini al organizers of the 5 Marrabenta fes val currently taking place in Maputo and other ci es around the country. He recently le Mozambique to recover from ill-health and Club of Mozambique wishes him a speedy recovery. On Thursday 2 February, all Marrabenta lovers can go on board the Marrabenta train which leaves from Maputo s main sta on. The train will drop you at Marracuene where there is a lot more Marrabenta and the Gwaza Muthini tradi onal fes val to enjoy. This is all part of the 5th Marrabenta Fes val that started 26/1 and con nues un l 12/2. ENGLISH SPEAKING ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS MEETINGS Every Wednesday evening 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm.
