- present a deeper understanding and insight about the possibilities and limitations of science, it s role in society as well as the individual responsibilities regarding how it may be implicated. These goals are also partly applicable for a licentiate degree in psychology. 2. Contents and structure of the education 2.1. Structure of the education The third-cycle education in psychology is completed with a doctoral degree or a licentiate degree. The education encompasses 240 university points for a doctoral degree, or 120 university points for a licentiate degree. A doctoral student that has been accepted to the third-cycle education, and that will complete a doctoral degree may also if he or she wishes also complete a licentiate degree as a part of their ongoing education. An applicant may also, if he or she wishes, and if the faculty board deems it appropriate, be accepted to a third cycle courses and study program based on the 120- university points model, ending in a licentiate degree (AFUU 3 ). A third-cycle courses and study program (doctoral) in psychology that ends in a doctoral degree comprises of four years net study time and comprises of a 90 university points (course) block and a doctoral thesis of 150 university points. A third-cycle courses and study program that ends in a licentiate degree comprises of two net years of study time and comprises of a 45 university point (course) block and a 75 university point licentiate essay. Both parts (blocks) of the educational program should run simultaneously and the doctoral student is recommended to begin work early on one s thesis. This work shall be presented/reported, both at a halftime- or licentiate seminar, as well as a final seminar. The doctoral student will complete at least 45 university points of the course block before the halftime- or licentiate seminar and the full 90 university points before the final seminar. 2.2 Supervisor Two supervisors will be appointed for all third-cycle students, comprising of one main supervisor with the overall responsibility for the education, including work regarding the thesis, and one assistant supervisor. One of the supervisors must be employed or an adjunct at Uppsala University. The supervisors are required to have a doctoral degree or comparable qualifications, and one of the supervisors must be at least an associate professor (compare. 1 AFUU). The doctoral student has the right to supervision during the education, as long as the principal (with support from HF 6 chap. 30 ) doesn t deem otherwise. The doctoral student has the right to switch supervisor (compare. SFS 2010:1064, HF 6 chap 28 ). 2

At least one of the supervisors must have completed education for supervising or been deemed by the faculty to have comparable competence Individual syllabus For every doctoral student an individual syllabus shall be established. On the delegation of the faculty board for social sciences, the head of the department of psychology will establish it, after consultation with the doctoral student and his or her supervisor(s). The individual syllabus shall include a time frame for the doctoral students education, specified information regarding the organization of the doctoral students tutoring, information regarding other commitments that the doctoral student and the faculty board (e.g., the department board) will have during the education period, and other issues that may be useful to note to be able to maximize the time spent during the education period. The faculty board will follow up the individual syllabus at least once every year. During the follow up, the doctoral student and their main supervisor will inform the faculty board about how the education is coming along. The faculty board can during this (or any other time when motivated) make changes in the syllabus if needed. The timeframe of the education may only be extended if valid reasons are present. These reasons may be time off because of illness, for military service or confidence assignments within labor organizations or student organizations, or parental leave. Before the change is made the doctoral student and their supervisor will be given a chance to state their case. The doctoral student, the supervisors and the department head will verify in writing that they have taken note of the individual study plan and the changes that may be made (compare.sfs 2010:1064, HF 6 chap 29 ). The form for the individual study plan can be downloaded from the social science faculty s webpage: 3. Courses The third-cycle education (doctoral) in psychology that ends in a doctoral degree includes a course block including 90 higher university credits (HE), which must be divided into 30 HE devoted to methodology and 60 HE of courses pertaining to the subject. Mandatory course in methodology - General research methodology: Design, data and analysis 22,5 HE Selectable courses in methodology - Psychometrics 7,5 HE - MATLAB for psychology research I 7,5 HE - MATLAB for psychology research II 7,5 university points Selectable courses within the subject of psychology 3

- Affective and cognitive neuropsychology 7,5 HE - Biological psychology 7,5 HE - Seminar course 7,5 HE - Clinical psychology 7,5 HE - Cognitive Psychology I 7,5 HE - Cognitive Psychology II 7,5 HE - Perception 7,5 HE - Personality psychology I 7,5 HE - Personality psychology II 7,5 HE - Social psychology 7,5 HE - Developmental psychology I 7,5 HE - Developmental psychology II 7,5 HE Selectable courses (other) - The selectable courses (reading courses, methodological courses and individual indepth study courses) may be acquired either at the department or elsewhere (other universities etc.). It is expected that the theoretical subject courses will be selected in consultation with the supervisor so that they encompass a wider theoretical span than the specific dissertation subject. Third-cycle studies in psychology that end in a licentiate degree includes a course block including 45 HE, which must consist of 15 HE devoted to methodology and 30 HE of courses pertaining to the subject. It is expected that the theoretical topic courses will be selected in consultation with the supervisor so that they encompass a wider theoretical span than the specific subject of the licentiate essay. 3.1 Course cycle The mandatory methodology courses as well as the subject courses are given with specific intervals, but deviations may occur. Other courses may also be given by the department (different from the above). The head of the third-cycle education at the department submits information about the courses. 3.2 Tests of knowledge Every course given within the third-cycle education is completed by a written or verbal exam. The exams are graded by either pass or fail. The grade will be set by a teacher (examiner) specifically appointed by the head of the department. The following teaching categories may be appointed as examiners within the third-cycle education: Professors, associate professors, university lectors that have completed a doctoral degree and been reviewed by the recruiting group (that has applied and been hired/accepted in competition with others), assistant lectors and research assistants. 3.3 Accreditation The doctoral student, that has passed courses that are included in the third-cycle education at other universities, has the right to have these courses accredited after agreement with the examiner. This is also salient with regard to courses that are given 4

within the faculties common offers (graduate school courses) and with regard to courses that are given at other faculties or universities than Uppsala University. 4. Thesis and defense of one s doctoral thesis 4.1 Thesis The doctoral thesis will be fashioned either as one uniform, coherent scientific work (monograph thesis) or as a comprehensive summary of scientific papers/essays that the doctoral student has produced singularly or in cooperation with others compilation thesis). The doctoral thesis, and in the occurring cases the scientific papers in a thesis shall be of a certain quality that meets the specific proclaimed and reasonable requirements to be accepted and published in a scientific forum. At the department of psychology the compilation thesis is deemed to include at least 3 publishable articles, whereas at least one of these articles must be published or has been accepted for publication in a scientific journal. The exact number of articles of course varies depending on quality and extent of the specified work. The doctoral student shall be the first author on at least one of these articles. The licentiate essay, that will reflect about half the doctoral time period, can either consist of scientific papers with a smaller jacket than above, meaning about 2 publishable articles and a summary, or a monograph with smaller range than stated above. Papers and essays in compilation thesis s that are co-authored may be accredited in licentiate- or doctoral degrees if the authors individual work can be clearly distinguished. The subject of the thesis and the choice of its written language are decided on together with the supervisors. An abstract in English is to be included with all theses. The thesis manuscript is to be presented at one- or several research seminars or undergo a comparable review process by way of the department. The faculty board provides specific guidelines as well as allocation of state funds for the printing of the thesis. This may also be applicable for licentiate essays. 4.2 Defense of one s doctoral thesis The doctoral thesis is to be defended verbally at a public seminar. The dean decides the time and place of the defense. A defense of one s doctoral thesis and licentiate seminars may be held during the stated university semester period as well as during the summer break, but not between june 15 th and august 15 th (compare.ruf 11 ). The defense of one s doctoral thesis is to be announced at least three weeks in advance by way of electronic nailing. The dean may shorten the announcement period if exceptional reasons are present (compare.ufv 2009/1993, 9 RUF). The so-called nailed pages shall be published digitally, but can also be posted on the bulletin 5

board in the University building. It is mandatory that compilation thesis s also digitally publish their overall summary. Acceptance to the third-cycle education with a licentiate degree as the end goal also entails there to be a digital publishing of the nailed pages. At the nailing occasion, the doctoral thesis will be made available at the university in a satisfactory number so that reviews of the thesis can be made when defense of the thesis occurs. The social sciences faculty board decides on a minimum of printed copies of the monograph thesis and compilation thesis (including the overall summary and including relevant papers) according to specific rules and regulations (samfak.uu.se). In addition to this, the department is responsible for printing and distributing copies of the thesis to supervisors, the exam board, the chairperson of the defense, the faculty examiner as well as having the responsibility that the thesis is available at the department for review and general distribution. The thesis is shipped to every department and university in the country that has a third-cycle education in psychology, and is to be made available at least two weeks before the defense of the dissertation occurs (compare SAMFAK 2003/39). The defense of the thesis is lead/held by a chairperson. At the defense there is to be a faculty examiner. The dean makes the decisions regarding chairperson, faculty examiner and exam board after a formal application is made. This application paper can be downloaded at The faculty examiner has the right to attend meetings with the exam board and to be active in the discussions regarding the thesis, but may not take part in any decisions. The same applies to the main supervisor, as long as he or she isn t one of the members of the exam board. Usually, an exam board at the faculty of social sciences consists of three members, whereas one is chosen as chairperson. The composition of the exam board is usually as follows: One member from the own department, one member from a different department within the social science faculty at Uppsala University, and one member from another university. The supervisor(s) for the dissertation may not be included in the exam board unless exceptional reasons are present, and at the decision of the principal. The exam board shall choose the chairperson from their own ranks. An even gender distribution is sought after in selecting the exam board. This means that the exam board shall consists of both men and women, unless exceptional reasons apply. Only the dean can grant an exemption. A doctoral thesis will be graded by pass or fail. Motivations of the grade will not be included in either the exam diploma or the records of the exam board. A member of the exam board that wishes to exempt oneself against the majority of the other member s decisions may make a note of this in the record of the exam board. When grading the thesis, both the content of the thesis and the defense of the same are to be taken into consideration. The grade of the thesis is to be made by the exam board that is appointed for each separate dissertation. All course points must be completed before the defense of the dissertation befalls. 6

4.3 Licentiate seminar The licentiate essay shall be defended at a public seminar. It is graded either pass or fail. At the time of grading both the contents of the essay and the defense the same are to be taken into consideration. The grade is made by an examiner that is appointed by the head of the department. All course points must be completed before the seminar befalls. Time and place of the seminar is decided by the head of the department. 5. Examination A doctoral degree in the third-cycle education within the subject of psychology is reached when the doctoral student has completed the 240 university points aligned with the subject and passed all the required exams relative to the education as well as having written and defended a doctoral thesis at a public seminar that has been approved by the exam board. A licentiate degree in psychology is reached after the doctoral student has completed the 120 university points aligned with the subject and passed all the required exams relative to the education as well as having written and publicly defended a licentiate essay that has been approved by an examiner. The university principal issues diplomas after an application is made to the examination division. 6. Entry-taking and transition regulations This syllabus takes effect on February 1 st The previous syllabus then seizes to be valid for doctoral students that have been accepted after this specific date. Doctoral students that have been accepted prior to this date may ask to transition to the new syllabus if the education permits. The head of the department makes decision of transition to the new syllabus after discussions with the supervisors and examiner, which also will provide eventual exemptions from mandatory elements of the syllabus. Furthermore, doctoral students that have been accepted according to the previous syllabus have the right to complete their education according to that syllabus. 7
