TITLE: NUMBER: ISSUER: Pathways for Middle and High School Math Course Placement for Transition Year DATE: August 12, 2014 Gerardo Loera, Executive Director Office of Curriculum, Instruction and School Support Susan Tandberg, Ed.D. Director, K-12 Instruction Office of Curriculum, Instruction and School Support ROUTING All Offices ESC Instructional Superintendents ESC Instructional Directors ESC Secondary Math Coordinators ESC Counseling Coordinators Principals APSCS Counselors Mathematics Department Chairs Math Coaches and Teachers SLC Leads PURPOSE: MAJOR CHANGES: BACKGROUND The purpose of this Memorandum is to provide schools with guidance regarding course placement in mathematics for middle and high school students in accordance with the LAUSD implementation of the California Common Core State Standards: Mathematics (CA CCSSM). The 2014/2015 school year will serve as a transition year as the District converts all courses to the CA CCSSM. Secondary math courses have been developed that align with the content focus identified in the Standards for Mathematics Content and Standards for Mathematical Practices. This Memorandum replaces Memorandum This updated version contains: - Guidelines for placement of grade 7 students and incoming grade 9 students - Instructions on how to access the data through MiSIS - Letter to parents with information on placement guidelines and eligibility for high school credits In 2010, the California Board of Education adopted the California Common Core State Standards: Mathematics (CA CCSSM). These standards will be fully implemented and assessed in the school year. This memo is to provide guidelines to schools on student placement as the California Common Core State Standards are implemented. The California Common Core State Standards: Mathematics (CA CCSSM) has shifted primary concepts, skills and focus in all secondary math courses. Under the CA CCSSM, additional rigor is introduced in earlier grade levels by including skills and concepts that were formerly included at higher grade levels. For example, some standards that were previously (under the 1997 California Standards) found in Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 1 of 20 August 12, 2014

Algebra 1 are now a part of the Common Core Math 8 course. In addition, standards previously found in the Algebra 2 course are now located in the Common Core Algebra 1 course. These changes are reflected in the newly developed LAUSD Common Core secondary math courses. INSTRUCTIONS: The math course sequence for secondary courses has changed to reflect the adoption of the Common Core Standards. Starting with the school year, most students will take Common Core (CC) Math 6, Common Core Math 7, Common Core Math 8, Common Core Algebra 1, Common Core Geometry, and Common Core Algebra 2. Students who successfully complete CC Algebra 2 can be enrolled in higher mathematics courses such as Pre-Calculus, etc. Alternative pathways will be available for students who can be accelerated or desire a different pathway. Secondary mathematics courses have been updated to reflect the CA CCSSM as outlined in the California Mathematics Framework revised in The course numbers have been changed to appropriately reflect the updated courses. Schools shall use these course codes beginning in the 2014/2015 school year. Course Codes for 2014/2015 Grade Level Common Core Math Courses Course # Grade 6 CC Math 6 AB /12 Grade 7 CC Math 7 AB /16 Grade 7 Accelerated CC Math 7 AB /18 Grade 8 CC Math 8 AB /38 Grade 8 Accelerated CC Algebra /40 High School CC Algebra 1 (Year-long) /42 High School AB /24 High School CC Algebra 2 AB /44 High School Honors Advanced Math AB /10 High School Pre-Calculus AB /12 I. Middle School Placement for 2014/2015 The new Common Core courses for middle school grades are CC Math 6, CC Math 7, and CC Math 8. A. Traditional Pathway Students in traditional pathways in should be placed in the next grade level course in All entering grade 6 students must be enrolled in CC Math 6. 3 Middle School Traditional Pathway CC MATH 6 CC MATH 7 CC MATH 8 Students in grade 6 shall be placed in CC Math 6 Student in grade 7 shall be placed in CC Math 7 Students in grade 8 shall be placed in CC Math 8 It is important to note that CC Math 8 is not the same course as the current Algebra Readiness. The California CCSS Mathematics Framework states that this 8 th grade course has much of the content central to Algebra courses of the past - namely linear equations, inequalities, and functions. CC Math 8 is a rigorous grade-level course that will prepare students for higher math courses. Due to the design of the CCSSM and the progressions of the math standards, all students must be exposed to and learn all of the standards. No content standards may be skipped. B. Accelerated Pathway According to the Common Core State Standards Initiative: Decisions to accelerate students into higher mathematics before ninth grade must require solid evidence of mastery of prerequisite CA CCSSM. Mathematics is by nature hierarchical. Every step is a preparation for the next one. Learning it properly requires thorough grounding at each step and skimming over any topics will only weaken one s ability to tackle more complex material down the road (Wu 2012). Serious efforts must be made to consider solid evidence of a student s conceptual understanding, knowledge of procedural skills, fluency, and ability to apply mathematics before moving a student into an accelerated pathway. (The California Mathematics Framework - Appendix A, November 6, 2013.) The Accelerated Pathway beginning in middle school is only for students who show advanced readiness. Students should not skip any math concepts as they accelerate to higher courses, otherwise, they will not have the depth of understanding needed to be successful in those courses. In order to help school staff determine student readiness for an Accelerated Pathway, grade 6 students in the school year took a LAUSD placement assessment. The result from this assessment in combination with final grade and teacher recommendation (if available) will be used to make a determination as to whether students will continue on the traditional or accelerated pathway. Students that successfully completed Algebra 1 by meeting the placement guidelines below will be placed in during the school year. The school year will be the last year that Geometry will be offered at the middle school level. Additionally, Algebra 1 shall no longer be offered in 7 th grade beginning in Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 3 of 20 August 12, 2014

Accelerated courses begin in 7 th grade. In an accelerated pathway 3 years of math are combined into two math courses: Accelerated CC Math 7 and Accelerated CC Algebra 1. Standards are not cut or skipped but compacted requiring students to learn at a faster pace. Accelerated CC Math 7 contains all the CC Math 7 standards and half of the CC Math 8 standards. Accelerated CC Algebra 1 contains the second half of the CC Math 8 standards and all the CC Algebra 1 standards. Students who are identified for the Accelerated Pathway will take Accelerated Math 7 and Accelerated CC Algebra 1 respectively. Middle School Accelerated Pathway ACCELERATED CC MATH 6 CC MATH 7 ACCELERATED CC ALGEBRA 1 Note: Schools will offer the proper placement for advanced students who follow alternate pathways. 1. Placement Guidelines for incoming 7 th graders Careful consideration of multiple data points is needed to make a decision about students placement in mathematics courses. Students may have had limited exposure to Common Core math standards; many will need additional support. Students entering grade 7 shall be placed in Common Core (CC) Math 7. Students who show a solid understanding on mathematic concepts, fluency in procedural skills and ability to apply mathematics concepts may be considered for the accelerated pathway. The criteria for placing students into the Accelerated CC Math 7 course are as follows: Proficient on the Mathematics Placement Assessments and earned a grade of A or B in their Math 6 course. Students who completed Math 6 at an elementary school who scored Proficient on the Mathematics Placement Assessment and earned a grade of 4. Schools should consider the above factors as well as student readiness for an accelerated pathway where 3 years of mathematics are taught in two years time. 2. Placement Guidelines incoming for 8 th graders Students entering grade 8 shall be placed in Common Core (CC) Math 8. Students entering grade 8 who completed Algebra 1 in grade 7 and successfully meet the criteria below shall be placed in Common Core (CC) Geometry and will receive 10 high school credits in mathematics. Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 4 of 20 August 12, 2014

Scored Proficient or Basic in the Algebra 1 Summative Assessment and earned a grade of A or B in Algebra 1, or Scored Proficient in the Algebra 1 Summative Assessment and earned a C in Algebra 1. Students entering grade 8 who completed Algebra 1 in grade 7 and scored Below Basic yet received an A in Algebra 1 may be placed in CC Geometry with the following conditions: Student is scheduled into a second period of math (Algebra 1 Tutorial). Parent is notified and agrees. Student does not receive high school credit. All other students who completed Algebra 1 in grade 7 and who did not meet the above criteria will be placed in CC Algebra 1. II. High School Student Placement for The LAUSD courses for high school following the CA CCSSM are CC Algebra 1, and CC Algebra 2. This course sequence is recommended as some of the CC Algebra 2 content depends on content learned in. Advanced courses will continue to be available, such as: Pre- Calculus, Statistics and Probability, AP Statistics and Probability, AP Calculus AB and others. See Attachment B for placement recommendations. A. High School Traditional Pathway: CC ALGEBRA 1 CC GEOMETRY CC ALGEBRA 2 4th MATH COURSE B. High School Accelerated Pathway: Students will have opportunities to accelerate at the high school level. This is not an exhaustive list of options. CC ALGEBRA 1 /CC GEOMETRY CC ALGEBRA 2 PRE-CALCULUS AP CALCULUS AB CC ALGEBRA 1 CC GEOMETRY H ADVANCED MATH * AP CALCULUS AB * H Advanced Math consists of the Algebra 2 standards with additional standards for more advanced mathematics. This rigorous course also accelerates more than one year of math content to into a yearlong course that will prepare students for AP Calculus as the subsequent course. Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 5 of 20 August 12, 2014

There are opportunities at the high school level to accelerate and enroll in higher math courses such as AP Calculus and AP Statistics & Probability. Some of these opportunities include a double block of math or enrollment in CC Advanced Math. This is not the exhaustive list of possible pathways. However, these pathways are in line with the California Mathematics Framework revised in C. Placement of High School Students for Attachment B has the recommended course placement for students in the school year. 1. Students Currently in Grade 11 (Graduating Class of 2015) Per CDE guidelines and board policy, the class of 2015 needs to successfully complete at least two math courses for graduation. These students will be allowed to finish their requirements using the current (i.e. Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) math courses. Only these students may be enrolled in those current courses as they will not take the SMARTER Balanced Assessment during the school year. 2. Students Currently in Grade 10 (Graduating Class of 2016) The class of 2016 must meet A-G graduation requirements including passing three A-G math courses (or their equivalent through A-G validation) with a grade of D or better to successfully complete graduation requirements. Also, students in 11 th grade in the school year will be the first group to take the SMARTER Balanced assessment. Students who complete Geometry will continue to CC Algebra 2 under the CA CCSSM. 3. Students currently in Grade 9 (Graduating Class of 2017) The class of 2017 must meet the A-G graduation requirements with a grade C or better for graduation. These students will take the SMARTER Balanced Assessment in Spring of Students currently in Grade 8 (Graduating class of 2018) Students must pass their courses with a grade of C or better to earn A-G credit. They will have had the opportunity to take three years of Common Core courses before they take the assessment in the 11 th grade. The traditional sequence for these students in 9 th grade will be CC Algebra 1. a) Placement Guidelines Students entering grade 9 who completed Algebra Readiness in grade 8 shall be placed in Common Core Algebra 1. These students will need additional support that may be in the form of Algebra Tutorial Lab. Students entering grade 9 who completed Algebra 1 in grade 8 and successfully meet the criteria below shall be placed in Common Core Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 6 of 20 August 12, 2014

(CC) Geometry and will receive high school credit for Algebra 1. Scored Proficient or Basic in the Algebra 1 Summative Assessment and earn a grade of A or B in Algebra 1 shall be enrolled in CC Geometry in grade 9. Scored Proficient in the Algebra 1 Summative Assessment and earned a C in Algebra 1 shall be enrolled in in grade 9. The above students will receive 10 high school credits in mathematics. Students entering grade 9 who completed Algebra 1 in grade 8 and scored Below Basic yet received an A in Algebra 1 may be placed in with the following conditions: Student is scheduled into a second period of math (Algebra 1 Tutorial) Parent is notified and agrees Student does not receive high school credit All other students who completed Algebra 1 in grade 8 and who did not meet the above criteria will be placed in CC Algebra 1. Students who were enrolled in Algebra Readiness in 8 th grade need additional support as they enter CC Algebra 1 in high school. It is highly recommended that these students have a second support class for mathematics. These students might be at risk of not being successful in CC Algebra 1 as the Algebra Readiness standards taught in middle school were not grade-level standards III. Assessments A. District Assessments At the end of the school year, LAUSD administered two assessments: 1. Mathematics Placement Assessment This assessment was administered to all grade 6 students in middle and elementary school. Scores from this assessment will be used as one data point in making decisions about student s placement in grade Algebra 1 Summative Assessment This assessment was administered to all Algebra 1 students in middle school. Scores will be used as one data point in making decisions about student s placement and award 10 high school credits. Directions on the steps to access the data for these two assessments may be found on Attachment E. Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 7 of 20 August 12, 2014

B. State Assessments In the school year, students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 will be taking the SMARTER Balanced Assessments (SBAC) for mathematics. Students will take the assessment according to their grade-level and not course enrollment. SMARTER Balanced Assessments will assess Math 8 standards at 8 th grade and high school standards at 11th grade regardless of the course in which students are enrolled. The Math 11 assessment will include standards from CC Algebra 1, and CC Algebra 2. In addition to SMARTER Balanced assessments, students in grades 6 through Algebra 2 will take the District s CCSS aligned Interim Assessments. Important: Students in accelerated courses will take the assessment for their grade level. (i.e., Students in Accelerated CC Algebra1 in grade 8 will take the Math 8 assessment.) CCSS Standards Assessments Grade SBAC 6 CC Math 6 7 CC Math 7 8 CC Math 8 9 No Assessment 10 No Assessment 11 College Readiness Assessment IV. Support for Students With Disabilities (SWD) Specific supports for students with disabilities whose disability impacts performance in math should be detailed within the student s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The recommended strategies, adaptations, and accommodations for the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CA CCSSM) can be found in the California Mathematics Framework for Grades Kindergarten Through Grade 12 in the chapter Universal Access and in Appendix C: Possible Adaptations for Students with Learning Difficulties in Mathematics. Additional recommended supports can be found on the Division of Special Education website page on math instruction: SWD in the resource specialist program (RSP) who need additional support in Common Core math skills and concepts can be scheduled into either a general education math support elective course (e.g., Math Tutoring Lab) or the Learning Center course (Developing Math Skills Across Content Areas). The Learning Center course descriptions can be accessed on the Division website: Students in the special day program (SDP) should receive their support Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support Page 8 of 20 August 12, 2014

in the special education math course; no additional support course for math should be necessary for students in SDP. V. Parent Notification Schools must notify middle school parents of the changes in the math pathways for their student. Schools should use Attachment C to notify middle and high school parents of the new math sequence. Parents of all 6-8 th grade students should receive a notification. To notify parents of the guidelines for placement and high school credit eligibility, schools should use Attachment D. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are an outstanding vehicle that will enable all students to reach that goal. As we transition into the Common Core State Standards, there will be many changes in courses and course placement. As a result of the rigor and progression of the new standards, the courses for high school have changed. The new high school math courses are Common Core (CC) Algebra 1, Common Core Geometry, and Common Core (CC) Algebra 2. The names of these courses now reflect the changes brought on by the Common Core State Standards. Students will be expected to enter high school with an introductory understanding of Algebra concepts. There are different pathways students can take, such as traditional and accelerated. Students in a traditional pathway will be enrolled in CC Algebra 1,, and CC Algebra 2. Students in an accelerated pathway will start with CC Algebra 1,, and Honors Accelerated Advanced Mathematics. The accelerated pathway will give students the opportunity to reach AP Calculus AB at a more rapid pace. Additional pathways are also available for students interested in other advanced math courses such as Statistics and Probability. The next few years will be exciting as we learn about all the new opportunities available through the Common Core. It is very important to know that students will need support in these transition years. Our secondary students will be moving into a new set of standards and courses in the midst of their K-12 schooling. LAUSD will continue to explore and find the best ways to support students. We welcome your questions and concerns as we continue to support your child through this new system.
