1 Program: Masters of Business Administration (MBA): Assessed by The Department of Business: (Dr. Julia Frankland) Date : Mission Statement: The Malone University Department of Business provides its students with an education that integrates course-specific skills and knowledge with program-wide Christian values, including stewardship and integrity. This is accomplished by a faculty with solid academic credentials who combine practical experience and applied theoretical tools and systems. Independent analytical thought and evaluation are encouraged in the classroom, in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Program Goals: 1. Provide opportunities for students to reflect on the role of Christian faith in business 2. Provide opportunities for students to engage in the study and resolution of business related problems 3. Provide opportunities for students to network with those in other industries 4. Provide opportunities for students to learn from colleagues in other industries 1 P age

2 Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILO) 1) Students will be able to integrate course-specific skills and knowledge with the program-wide values of stewardship and integrity. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success Values integration case- The pre-test case is included as a course requirement in the MBA 503 Organizational Behavior course(1 st course in program). The post-test is included as a course requirement in the MBA 691 course (last course in program) All Department of Business faculty members read the case responses and interpret the results according to a standard rubric. Recommendation for attention will be based on limited improvement between pre and post test results and results between years using cumulative moving averages. Summary of Data Collected See VIC reports in the Results Report for supporting data. The administrations of the VIC indicate no improvement in the raw scores on criteria #4 in the rubric and more importantly in the cumulative moving averages. MBA overall scores on cumulative moving averages were pre-test and in post-test. Moving average score on criteria #1 of rubric (identification of ethical issues and value judgments) was pretest and post-test. Moving average score on criteria #4 of rubric (quality of business analysis) was pre-test and post test. Use of Results Slight adjustment of wording of the outcome to better reflect our expectations of student attainment. (Students will be able to instead of Student ability to..) Continuation of policy of 5/08 to require ethics assignment including Christian values/responses in each course. The case that had been used prior to this year was dated and often generated displeasure as an assignment from the MBA students. A new case was selected in fall of 2010 and implemented in spring of MBA will use the new case in fall Results from this case being used at the MBA level will be available in the 2011 reports. The new case is shorter in length as well as the required analysis (2-3pages single spaced as opposed to old requirement of at least 4 pages single spaced) This decrease in length requirement led to fewer cases being thrown out as unusable and a greater number of cases being evaluated Benchmarks established for graduates for criteria #1 of rubric (identification of ethical issues and value judgments) of 2.1 for MBA and for criteria #4 of rubric (quality of business analysis)of P age

3 2) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of current business practice and theory Major Fields Test (MFT) & Values Integration Case (VIC discussed on page 1 above) MFT - The test is included as a course requirement in the MBA 691 course (last course in program). The department of business faculty review the results and recommends areas for attention. Historically, the recommendation for attention was based on average assessment indicator scores outside of the interquartile range and/or institutional means outside of the interquartile range. Due to changes in MFT norming, we are able to compare the averages of total MFT scores from one group of testers to another but the results from one part of the test to another (for example accounting fall 2008 to fall 2010) are not comparable due to different exams being used. Once data is available in sufficient amounts for the MFT, comparisons across subject areas can once again be made. See MFT reports for supporting data. The 2010 spring cohort was our first use of the new MFT for MBA students. MBA students measured in this year of data have grades in their courses overall which support the findings of the MFT exam (i.e. better students overall in cohort 26 with higher grades score better on MFT. Lower aptitude cohorts have lower grades and MFT scores. ) On the VIC, the moving average score on criteria #4 of rubric (quality of business analysis) was pre-test and post test Slight adjustment of wording of the outcome to reflect better our expectations of student attainment (Students will be able to instead of Student ability to.) Faculty continue to evaluate content on the MFT to ensure curriculum adequately covers the core knowledge base. Benchmarks established for MBA students for criteria #4 on rubric on VIC(quality of business analysis) MBA of P age

4 3) Students will be able to identify and address major issues presented by a business problem Major Fields Test (MFT) & Values Integration Case (VIC) MFT values shown in appendix. Performance values vary. VIC results show no improvement on Criteria #4 on the rubric which is the measure of the quality of business analysis for the students. Raw numbers show movements from 2.08 to in the raw data, but only a slight drop when evaluated through the more appropriate cumulative moving averages of to Further investigation of these graduate students in the post-test demonstrated lower overall quality of student in terms of grade attainment so we should expect lower scores overall. Slight adjustment of wording of the outcome to reflect better our expectations of student attainment (Students will be able to instead of Student ability to..) and adjustment of outcome from identifying and addressing all business problems to identifying and addressing business problems. To encourage student discussion that is focused in the VIC the instructions were changed to read: Analyze, make and justify recommendations to the business issues noted in #1 above. (Address quantitatively when appropriate and qualitatively otherwise).- effective May 2011 Benchmark value for criteria #4 of rubric is set at 2.2 for MBA. 4 P age

5 4) Students will be able to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas, while taking into consideration the impact on God s world. Values Integration Case (VIC) Results of the VIC analysis are attached. This statistical analysis allows us to account for differences in the knowledge of students coming in to the program. It is reasonable to believe that students entering the graduate programs have somewhat well developed abilities in this area. On criteria #3 of the rubric (evidence of ethical astuteness) MBA students show a decrease from a pre-test score of 1.9 to a post test score of 1.85 in raw data but moving averages show improvement of a pre-test of 1.71 to By accounting for the different capabilities of incoming students we see slight improvement in this value. Criteria #2 (evidence of Christian Faith Evident) on the rubric for MBA shows a raw change of 1.98 to 1.8 for pretest to post-test. Cumulative moving averages show pre-test scores of 1.8 and post test to Outcome wording was adjusted to include the statement that students resolve dilemmas, not just identify their existence. A new case was chosen in the fall of 2010 and implemented in the MBA classes beginning in the fall of 2010 for MBA. To encourage analysis of ethical concepts, there will be a continuation of policy to require an ethics-based assignment in each course and frequent discussion of concepts. Fall 2011 faculty meeting will further highlight how ethics education is happening in individual classrooms. Benchmark attainment in the cumulative moving averages is set at 2.0 for MBA for criteria #3 of rubric to score the VIC.
