WG3 Metadata - Goals Define a set of metadata specifications that support intended capability of the Data Discovery Index prototype - being designed by the biocaddie Core Development Team - as outlined in the White Paper Core metadata, designed to be future-proofed for progressive extensions (phase 1) Domain specific metadata for more specialized data types (phase 2) Use cases and the competency questions will be used throughout the process to define the appropriate boundaries and level of granularity: which queries will be answered in full, which only partially, and which are out of scope

WG3 Metadata Other info Full description: goals, synergies, phases, members & files Core metadata ( phase 1: May-July 2015) Joint effort with BD2K Center for Expanded Data Annotation and Retrieval (CEDAR) Synergies with BD2K Metadata WG (co-chaired by M Musen/ CEDAR, G Alter/bioCADDIE) and ELIXIR activities Dependency and synergies with other biocaddie activities: WG4 Use Cases and Test Benckmarks Core Development Team

WG3 Metadata Strawman work Compiling list of: data discovery initiatives - the analysis of their metadata schemas is a valuable guidance existing metamodels for representing metadata - in preparation for the next steps Collecting use cases and competency questions (top-down approach) Mapping of generic and life science-specific metadata schemas to identify common metadata elements (bottom-up approach) Ø Ø The results of both approaches will be compared and, along with the information gathered from metamodels and other data discovery implementations, we will converge on the set of metadata All schemas and models considered are being listed progressively in the BioSharing collection for biocaddie

WG3 Metadata 4 documents 1 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document: contains lists of material reviewed outlines the approach used to identify metadata descriptors and track their provenance from community standards, data models etc.

WG3 Metadata 4 documents 2 Selected Competency Questions: representative set from use cases workshop, white paper, submitted by the community and from Phil Bourne questions have been abstracted and key metadata elements have been highlighted and color-coded so that can be easily matched with the metadata resulting from the mapping document (on next slide) as the set of core and extended metadata elements are defined, it will become clearer which questions the Data Discovery Index will not be able to answers if full and which only in part.

WG3 Metadata 4 documents ③ Metadata Mapping: ² ² both generic and (progressively more) life science-specific metadata schemas are being mapped to identify common metadata elements if available, formal representations such XML schema document (XSD) and semantic model (RDF/OWL representations) will be used as input material to the mapping process o to track provenance information each metadata schema/model will be described and made available in the BioSharing collection, including: version; source of metadata elements (e.g. XSD), the URL where the model or schema has been sourced; documentation, including URL where the documentation is located

WG3 Metadata 4 documents 4 Core Metadata Elements: the result of the combined approachers, as outlined documents 1-3, is delivering a set of core metadata elements and progressively these will be extended to domain specific ones we aim to have maximum coverage of use cases with minimal number of data elements, but we do foreseen that not all questions can be answered in full

WG3 Metadata Next steps Work to date will be reviewed by the biocaddie Executive and Steering Committees, your feedback is also solicited metadata will also be ranked according to its priority and associated with a requirement level In parallel, a conceptual model need to be identified and used to formally represent the metadata elements, investigating existing metamodels and adopting the FAIR principles the selected metamodel will need to accommodate the core metadata and domain specific extensions, progressively as these are identified this second output will be in a machine actionable form that will rely on formalized expressions to document interrogation options over specific models for these representation, we ll analyse current metadata models (see above) and entity relationship models to represent the identified metadata element

WG3 Metadata Your role Provide feedback on strawman work: process we are using to identify and define the metadata elements, documented in 4 google docs list of (core) metadata elements Ø Ø within the in the next 2 weeks, prior final packaging and public release of all documentation focus on with SOP and list of Core Metadata Elements Provide advise as we move towards implementation on: a conceptual model to be used to formally represent the metadata elements, both core and extensions in the next 2 weeks
