4 Long Term Care Insurance Helps protect your independence, dignity and life savings Critical Illness Insurance Designed to help make sure you can survive financially You can choose the type of care that will suit your needs Daily care will be necessary on a long term basis if you become physically dependent due to accident, illness or aging, are unable to perform the activities of daily living, or become cognitively impaired. But with limited government funding, your costs could be thousands of dollars each month. Further, it s predicted that the average Canadian will soon spend more time caring for their elderly family members than raising their children. Long term care insurance provides members with tax-free income benefits that give you the freedom to receive care in a long term care facility or your own home - it s your choice. Coverage is available to age 80, with lower rates to age 65. Premiums are based on age at time of application. Our partners, MyDignity MyDignity have offered long term care insurance and critical illness insurance in Canada for more than 30 years. They shop the market to find the best coverage solution and value for your specific needs and budget. Consider Simplified Issue Long Term Care Insurance If you find coverage hard to obtain or you don t know where to begin, we offer a solution with simplified acceptance due to limited health questions, less underwriting, and no medical exam required. You can buy coverage with lifetime benefits of $50,000 or more to age 80. Value-added assistance services like housekeeping are no extra cost. You can cover expenses incurred during treatment and recovery Being stricken with a critical illness is not like having the flu. You may be incapacitated, unable to care for yourself. Recovery can be long and expenses not covered by your provincial health plan or other insurance can be tens of thousands of dollars. You may be unable to function in your current home or return to work. Further, consider that the odds of you or someone you love being affected by a serious condition such as a heart attack, stroke or cancer are over one in three. Tax-free payments upon diagnosis of a covered illness With critical illness insurance and help from our program partner MyDignity, your only concern will be getting well. You can use the benefits for income replacement, home renovations, travel, etc. - the choice is yours. Be aware that underwriting guidelines can be strict, as they will examine the applicant s health, lifestyle, and their family s medical history. Coverage is available to age 65, while premiums can be costly past age 55. Members: our long term care and critical illness insurance plans are offered together to help you better understand the similarities and differences. For more details, please call program partner MyDignity. They ll answer your questions and help you make an informed decision. 6 REPORT Keeping The Issues Front & Centre Joins the Fight to Save Door-to-Door Mail Delivery Right from the start, has been raising awareness of how Canada Post s move to community mailboxes will negatively affect most older Canadians, especially those with mobility challenges. But when mailbox installation started in Hamilton and Henry Evans-Tenbrinke began a sit-in on the proposed site in his neighbourhood to protest the cuts to door-to-door delivery, members all across the country rose in support of his stance for mail delivery in his community. Hamilton Chapter Chair, Doug Stone, and Anthony Quinn, Director of Community Development delivered s letter of support and joined the sit-in protest this past June. recently sent an open letter to all GTA Mayors to act on citizens concerns and stop community mailbox installation. continues to push for a reversal of Canada Post s decision, as we support Mr. Evans-Tenbrinke and likeminded Canadians in the protection of valuable public services. Back: Malcolm Buchanan (CURC), Doug Stone and Amar Chahil ( Hamilton), Ken Stone (CURC) Newfoundland Talks Seniors Care at CMA Roundtable Health care is still the highest priority for many Canadians. has pushed for transformative change to a health care system that s difficult to navigate, complex, incomplete and failing to meet our chronic care needs. The Newfoundland Chapter representatives attended a recent Seniors Care roundtable hosted by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and met with local MPs and MLAs. At the meeting, called for a health care system in which Canadians are not treated as consumers, but health care citizens who expect a system governed by universality, quality and access - values found in the Canada Health Act. Many other participants shared their concerns and recommendations for improvement, and agreed to make Seniors Care a priority in the next Federal Election. Ottawa and Halton Weigh in on Ontario s Elder Abuse Strategy has long urged provincial governments to help end elder abuse with a comprehensive strategy including a hot line, a duty to report, whistleblower protection, caregiver support, and investigative support. Representatives of Ottawa and Halton shared their concern about the prevalence of elder abuse and lack of supports during Ontario s Elder Abuse Strategy discussions in July. More needs to be done to build awareness and extend access to support services in our communities. And there are opportunities to educate students, so they don t tolerate any form of abuse. will continue to monitor the provinces efforts to end elder abuse, and ensure supports and services are in place for affected individuals and their families. Edmonton Raising Seniors Health as a Priority Edmonton met with the new Alberta Minister of Health and Minister of Seniors, Sarah Hoffman this July to raise the concerns of members, such as issues around homecare delivery and standards, availability of long term care spaces, staffing and standards of care. Edmonton and Calgary will have more meetings with the Minister and provincial government to enhance the quality of life for Albertans. 7 For the first time, pension reform is part of all three parties platforms ahead of the Federal Election. Almost 10 years has passed since began advocating for an increase to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) to provide greater retirement security for all Canadians, while also helping draw attention to the issue of inadequate savings and disappearing workplace pensions. s push for an increased CPP involved many calls REPORT is Pushing for Canada Pension Plan Reform in the 2015 Federal Election Cross Canada representatives of meeting with Ontario s Premier and the Minister of Finance to encourage them to get their counterparts in other provinces to call for an enhancement of CPP, leading up to the Federal-Territorial-Provincial Finance Ministers Annual Meeting back in to action, submissions to government, and shedding light on this issue in the media. With the 2015 Federal Election around the corner, we are starting to make some headway. In May 2015, Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver made an announcement that signalled a 180 degree turn from the Conservatives longstanding position on the CPP. He said that the government would discuss the possibility of allowing Canadians to make voluntary additional contributions to the CPP to supplement their retirement savings. Granted, this is not the same as s call for an increase to mandatory contributions. A New Vision of Aging For Canada However, the Conservatives voluntary contribution proposal marks the first time that pension reform is part of all three parties platforms. Leaders of the NDP and Liberal parties both made assurances to members during s annual general meetings, committing to a mandatory increase to the CPP if elected. The long running debate about CPP has also been a hot topic provincially. While the federal government continued to drag its feet, the Ontario Liberals created their own made-in-ontario pension plan and won the provincial election in 2014 with a platform that promised a CPP-like provincial plan. now sits on the Ontario Technical Advisory Committee and advises the government on how it can design and implement the provincial plan based on s recommended Universal Pension Plan a plan that is independent, professionally managed, uses existing enrolment and administration mechanisms, has employer contributions, has predictable benefits, and is large enough to withstand market shocks. members and the broader public have shown overwhelming support in favor of CPP expansion - 71% of members say that CPP enhancement is a ballot box issue. The time is ripe for change to make sure that all Canadians have enough to meet their retirement needs and thrive during their golden years, and will continue on this journey until a mandatory increase to CPP is a national reality. 8 & Over 50 Groups from Seniors Vote launch Get Out The Vote! Seniors Vote - a collaboration of seniors, retirees, professional and advocacy groups, led by, Congress of Union Retirees of Canada and National Pensioners Federation - are calling for the issues of financial security in retirement and health care reform to be on the federal agenda. In their open letter sent to the Minister of Finance and Opposition Finance Critics before the Spring 2015 federal budget, Seniors Vote highlighted what seniors will vote for including an increase to the CPP and national home care standards. Recognizing increased voter turnout is critical to ensuring a better Canada for generations to come, Seniors Vote has launched Get Out The Vote!, to help encourage older Canadians get their family members and friends to vote in this year s Federal Election. Seniors Vote understands that voting is fundamental to a democratic society and helps to ensure that the decisions made are representative of the citizens. 75% of Canadians 65 and older voted in the 2011 Federal Election, but only 46% age turned out at the polls. REPORT Get Out The Vote! is calling upon older voters to change this. To start, we encourage everyone to check if you are on the voter list, confirm that your name and address is correct and visit the Elections Canada website for more details. Then identify at least three family members or friends who currently don t vote and urge them to register with Elections Canada. Lastly, we encourage you to engage in discussions and share content on social media while attaching hashtags #SeniorsVote and #GetOutTheVote to publicize the initiative and build momentum with younger voters. Our goal is to ensure that all eligible Canadians will be voting citizens. 14 REPORT To Find Out More Visit carp.ca Yes, you care for them.
