1 UNDERGRADUATE ASSESSMENT PLAN USF SARASOTA-MANATEE Degree: BS/BA in General Business Administration (GBA) CIP Code: Program Mission Statement: The General Business Administration (GBA) major comprises minor concentrations in any two of the following disciplines: Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing. Each minor concentration consists of 9-12 semester hours of coursework beyond the core. The objective of the GBA major is to provide students the opportunity to (1) pursue a broad-based study of business through upper level course work in two disciplines and/or (2) tailor a program of studies that combines upper level course work in business with electives from outside the College to meet career preparation goals. The GBA major, combined with the business core and the Strategic Management capstone course, will prepare students for further studies in business; entrylevel positions in management, accounting, finance, marketing, and information technology across industries, and small business management. Graduates of the GBA program will be able to demonstrate the following: A. Discipline Specific Knowledge and Skills Outcome A1 Finance Minor Concentration: A comprehensive understanding of financial tools and concepts and the ability to apply them in a problem-solving context. Information Systems Minor Concentration: The ability to identify the concepts and processes in the life-cycle of information systems with an emphasis on the early stages. Management Minor Concentration: An awareness of how international cultural differences affect business practices and awareness of basic international management concepts. Marketing Minor Concentration: An understanding of and the ability to apply marketing concepts and skills including relationship marketing and market segmentation and targeting. Methods of Finance Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a test bank of questions designed to assess students ability to apply financial tools and concepts in a problem-solving context. Information Systems Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a test bank of questions designed to assess students ability to identify the concepts and processes in the lifecycle of information systems. Management Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a test bank of questions designed to assess students awareness of how international cultural differences affect business practices and awareness of basic international management concepts. A random selection of questions addressing these concepts is embedded in exams in MAN 4600, International Management. designed to assess students ability to apply marketing concepts and skills, including relationship marketing and market segmentation and targeting. 2 Levels of Finance Minor Concentration: A correct response rate of 70% on a question is considered acceptable. A correct response rate of 90% on a question is considered outstanding in FIN 3403, Principles of Finance. Information Systems Minor Concentration: At least 60% of students will achieve a score of at least 70% on questions embedded in exams in ISM 3113, Systems Analysis and Design. Management Minor Concentration: A correct response rate of 70% on a question is considered acceptable. A correct response rate of 90% on a question is considered outstanding in MAN 4600, International Management. Finance Minor Concentration: 64% of all embedded questions in FIN 3403, Principles of Finance, had a correct response rate at or above 70%. 18% of all embedded questions had a correct response rate at or above 90%. Overall, the correct response rate in FIN 3403, Principles of Finance, was 73%. Information Systems Minor Concentration: See Use of below. Management Minor Concentration: See Use of below. Use of Outcome A2 Finance Minor Concentration: In-depth knowledge of financial management, the underlying principles of corporate finance, and the analytical techniques involved in financial planning and decision-making. Information Systems Minor Concentration: A comprehensive understanding of the concepts involved in designing and administering complete database systems. Management Minor Concentration: An awareness of basic employment laws and recruiting, selection and performance appraisal practices. Marketing Minor Concentration: An understanding of and the ability to apply marketing concepts and skills including competitor analysis. 2

3 Methods of Finance Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a test bank of questions designed to assess students knowledge of financial management related to (1) Time-value of money, (2) valuation, (3) capital budgeting, (4) risk and return, (5) cost of capital, and (6) capital structure in FIN 4414, Advance Corporate Finance. Information Systems Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a bank of questions that address the concepts and processes involved in designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, using, and managing database systems. Management Minor Concentration: Faculty members, who are not instructors of in MAN 3301, Human Resource Management, which relates to basic employment laws and recruiting, selection and performance appraisal practices, developed a test bank of questions. designed to assess students ability to apply marketing concepts and skills including competitor analysis. Overall, the correct response rate in ISM 4212, Database Design and Administration, was 53%. Management Minor Concentration: 83% of all embedded questions in MAN 3301, Human Resources Management, had a correct response rate of at or above 70%. 33% of all embedded questions had a correct response rate of at or above 90%. Overall, the correct response rate in MAN 3301, Human Resources Management, was 82%. 3

4 Use of Outcome A3 Finance Minor Concentration: The ability to identify key economic issues and analyze their potential effects on evaluating investments and the ability to determine appropriate investment strategies and how such strategies should be accomplished. Management Minor Concentration: Organizational : The ability to gather the appropriate data needed for assessment of an organization using multiple methods and sources, and the ability to assess the suitability of organizational structure and culture to produce effective outcomes. Methods of Marketing Minor Concentration: An understanding of and the ability to apply marketing concepts and skills, including marketing planning. Finance Minor Concentration: Faculty members have developed a test bank of questions designed to assess students knowledge of investments and the functions and operations of various financial institutions and markets. Students answer these questions in FIN 4504, Principles of Investments, and FIN 4414, Advanced Corporate Finance. Management Minor Concentration: Students in MAN 4282, Organizational, are tested on their ability to find the most appropriate data for assessment, and construct appropriate metrics for assessment of performance through case-based assignments that are evaluated by a panel of faculty not teaching the course using a three-point rubric created for this purpose. designed to assess students ability to apply marketing concepts and skills including marketing planning. Overall, the correct response rate in MAN 4282, Organizational, was 94%. Use of B. Critical Thinking Skills Outcome B1 Finance Minor Concentration: Critical thinking and analytical abilities, including the capability to engage in inductive, deductive, and quantitative reasoning and to construct sound arguments. Information Systems Minor Concentration: The ability to interpret project requirements and develop a project to meet those requirements. Management Minor Concentration: The ability to analyze a company or management case/problem and recommend appropriate action. Methods of Marketing Minor Concentration: The ability to analyze factors required to construct a market plan. Finance Minor Concentration: Graduation Survey: Given to all GBA majors upon the completion of their degree. Graduates are asked to select the degree to which they agree or disagree with the following statement: My critical thinking skills have improved. Information Systems Minor Concentration: Faculty ratings of course projects in ISM 3113, Systems Analysis and Design and ISM 4212, Database Design and Administration. Management Minor Concentration: Student projects and presentations in the required course MAN 3240, Organizational Behavior Analysis. A scoring rubric is used to assess students critical thinking ability on scale of 1-3. designed to assess students ability to apply marketing concepts and skills including marketing planning. A random selection of questions addressing marketing planning is embedded in exams in MAR 3823, Marketing Management. 5

Information Systems Minor Concentration: Students should demonstrate the minimum level of competency required for successful entry into the MIS workforce, as determined by the department faculty. Management Minor Concentration: All students will receive a rating of at least 2 on a 3 point scale; at least 50% will receive a 3. Finance Minor Concentration: Of eleven (11) students responding, 100% agreed or strongly agreed with the following statement: My critical thinking skills improved. Information Systems Minor Concentration: See Use of below. Management Minor Concentration: 97% of students achieved a score of 2 or above. 66% of students achieved a score of 3. Use of C. Communication Skills Outcome C1 Finance Minor Concentration: The ability to communicate effectively, both on an individual basis and in collaboration with others, including finance professionals, managers in other fields, and non-financial stakeholders. Information Systems Minor Concentration: The ability to create and deliver effective oral presentations. Management Minor Concentration: The ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to develop and support conclusions and recommendations. Marketing Minor concentration: The ability to contribute effectively to group discussions, including the ability to develop and support conclusions and recommendations. 6

Graduates are asked to select the degree to which they agree or disagree with the following statements: My writing skills improved and My oral communication skills improved. Information Systems Minor Concentration: Faculty ratings of course projects in ISM 3113, Systems Analysis and Design and ISM 4212, Database Design and Administration. Management Minor Concentration: This competency is assessed via student projects and presentations in the required course MAN 3240, Organizational Behavior Analysis. A scoring rubric is used to assess students written and oral skills on a scale of 1-3. Marketing Minor concentration: The ability to contribute effectively to group discussions including the ability to develop and support conclusions and recommendations is assessed by instructors in MAR 3823, Marketing Management. Levels of Finance Minor Concentration: Of students responding, 75% will agree or strongly agree with the following statements: My writing skills improved and My oral communication skills improved.
