Inglés Led Displays Signs Dear student, The following pages will guide your work towards the end of our objective which is solving a problem that you will have to understand using strategies you already have and strategies you will learn throughout this sequence of activities. These guidelines are focused on the development of reading comprehension and written production. Through some activities related to this area of study, you will be able to successfully develop the thematic content and linguistic objective of these learning sessions. Before beginning our activities, take a look at the following table that explains the learning objectives for this unit. It s very important that you know what is expected from you at the end of these activities. It s also very important that you understand what the skills you are going to develop are and the steps you will follow in order to achieve your goals. Learning Objectives 1. Recognize Manual as a genre and as an instrument you will use to install a telephone switch board. 2. Apply reading strategies and techniques to identify general information from a text and identify the possible readers to whom the text was written for. Extract and interpret information of the text. 3. Aplicar estrategias y técnicas de lectura para localizar información y señalar de qué trata el texto, a quién va dirigido, rellenando tablas o contestando preguntas. Evaluation criteria 1. Subraya vocabulario relevante para la comprensión lectora. 2. Identifica ideas generales del texto leído contestando preguntas. 3. Busca información en internet relevante al tema tratado. 4. Proposing a possible solution for the problem Expository lesson on Led Display Signs. Obtaining information General comprehension Elaborating an interpretation Reflecting on and valuing the text content. Presenting your work During the first steps you will follow in order to achieve the objectives, you will have to use your previous knowledge about led display signs. The following table represents what your previous knowledge should be. These questions will also introduce you to the thematic of this guideline. Answer the questions inside the table: Previous Knowledge (The letter): checking what you already know Answer the following questions: 1. Do you know what a led display sign is? Can you describe one? 2. Have you ever been to a store that displays its offers through led display signs? Are you usually attracted to those signs? Do you usually feel tempted to read them? 3. Where do you usually find led display signs? 4. What do you think are the purposes of these sings? 6

7 Guía del Alumno 1 Presentation and comprehension of the situation (problem). Read the following situation: The owner of the famous delicatessen Tasty Ham, Mr. Juan, wants to optimize the attention of his customers by using an electronic display that shows the attention number. Besides, Mr. Juan wants to increase his sales by implementing a better advertising of his products through an electronic display which shows messages containing offers of his products. The purpose of this display is to attract more customers. In order to do this, Mr. Juan must consult with the telecommunications technician. Mr. Juan requests the technician to install the display inside his delicatessen and to explain how the led display sign works for him to control it. Mr. Juan needs to know how the electronic sign works and what advantages it might have for his delicatessen. Our first step towards resolving the following situation is to check your understanding of the same and exploit the text to extract important vocabulary from it. In this first part named Presentation and comprehension of the situation (problem), you will have to work with activities aiming at understanding what Mr. Juan has to know and do in order to solve his problem. 1. Underline vocabulary you think is relevant to understand the situation and make a list of these items. 2. Now that you have read and underlined some important concepts in the text, share your concepts with your classmates. 3. Read the text again and identify general ideas about the text. CONTEXT Who is Mr. Juan? Topic Answer Where does he work? What does Mr. Juan want to install in his delicatessen? What does Mr. Juan want to achieve by installing the system? What is the purpose of this system? Why does Mr. Juan have to consult a technician? 7

Now that you have already identified relevant information regarding Mr. Juan s problem, let s try to see if you can find information on your own. In this section of the activities, you will have to go to internet, a very useful tool to search for information, and look for a definition and characteristics of led display signs in order to understand what Mr. Juan needs for his delicatessen. Read carefully the following activities and do your best! 4. Go to and search for information on led display signs. Look for two different definitions and try to find out some advantages that this product has. Definition 1: Definition 2: Advantages of a led display sign: 5. Go to and look for information in order to answer the following questions: a. What is a Led Module? b. What is a led cabinet? c. What is a led display? 8

What do you think Mr. Juan needs to know in order to make the decision of installing a led display sign? Now that you have an idea of what a led display sign is and some advantages that this electronic tool has, it s time to use the information you already have. Do you think the Display is going to be useful for Mr. Juan s delicatessen? What do you think Mr. Juan should know about this sign in order to make the decision of install it? These are some of the questions you will have to answer during your work on this section of the guideline. b. Do you think the display is going to be useful for Mr. Juan? Why? c. Imagine you are the technician Mr. Juan has hired. Go to www. google.com and find a model of a led display sign. Explain Mr. Juan the specific characteristics this model of led display sign has. Include a picture of the sign and send him an explaining the information you have found. 9

You have come to the point in which your proposal is going to be validated through the comments your teacher will make in terms of the information you got about the led display sign. The teacher will conduct an expository class and you will learn about the special characteristics this electronic device has and how to install it and use it. Listen to the information carefully because you will have to compare it with your own information. 7. Listen to your teacher talking about the characteristics of a led display sign. Pay attention to the explanation and compare it with your information about the displays. What are Led Displays The variable message displays with LED technology are electronic tools for the visual communication, controlled by a CPU. These devices are able to memorize and visualize dozens of informative and advertising messages, in several formats and different timing. In the last few years the world of LED visualization faced an impressive revolution. This technology made available even for small and medium businesses a fundamental advertising tool, able to visualize high impact promotional messages. LED technology improved drastically in the past decades. Particularly in the past 5 years new production techniques have been developed to increase LEDs brightness and reduce the decay. All these innovations allow LED bright signs to keep functioning for over 10 years without changing the LEDs. What are the advantages of led displays? Variable message displays can memorize up to 100 informative and promotional messages, easy to schedule. Luminous notice boards can transmit variable messages while customers pass by, allowing a higher flexibility in communication with the public. The great flexibility of bright display allows to advertise products and special offers and at the same time to broadcast information of public interest. The effectiveness of a variable message sign is not affected by the space and the surface available as the traditional static signs. Luminous boards act as a street vendor, attracting potential customers and leading them into the shop. It is possible to change the messages visualized in case it is necessary to provide information to a specific category of customers. This function can result very useful during events and shows to offer a service of public interest. In some models of LED bright boards it is possible to broadcast logos and 3D images, in the order and with the timing defined by the shop s owner. 10

11 Guía del Alumno What are some types of led displays? Building Installations: These types of variable message signs are installed on roofs, facades and parapets. Usually they are installed in parallel or perpendicularly to the building s facade. Independent installations: These bright signs are usually installed on streets and highways or squares, and they are framed into a structure fixed to the ground. This carrying structure can be painted and decorated in order to match the surrounding environment. Indoor installations: Variable message signs are available also in the indoor use version. Ideal for shopping malls, cinemas, theaters, show rooms and congress centers, they can be installed on walls or have a standing structure. How do Led Displays work? Basics: LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are a modified form of semiconductor diode--that is, a device that allows current to flow in one direction while blocking it in the other. Made of a semi conductive material, smaller than traditional lighting sources and using less energy, LEDs can produce light of all colors and outside the visible light spectrum. Function: In LEDs, as in other diodes, output is created by electron/hole interactions at a positivenegative (p-n) junction (composed of the positive anode and negative cathode). Electrons emitted by electrodes are drawn to the p-n junction. Light energy (photons) is released by electrons falling into lower energy levels via holes, which are defined as the absence of electrons. 11

In this section of the sequence of activities, you will work with the information your teacher presented in order to completely understand its characteristics and advantages. 8. Answer the following questions using the information your teacher explained during the expository class. You can use your notes and the written information you have in your guideline. a. Write down a short definition of led displays using your own words. b. Why is it said that led displays are considered to be a fundamental advertising tool? c. Prepare a summary of the advantages led displays have for small or big companies. Pay attention to the bold letters contained in the text you have written in your guideline. d. What are building installations led signs? Where are they installed? e. What are independent installations led displays? Where are they installed? 12

What is the function of led displays? 6 General comprehension. 9. Prepare a Mind Map in order to summarize what you have learned about led displays. Use the information contained in the written text about led displays. Now that you have already read and understood some important information from the expository class on led displays your teacher presented you will continue working with general ideas and information by answering general questions related to the led displays and their purpose. 13

In this section of the sequence of activities you will be guided towards an interpretation of some aspects the information your teacher presented. You will need to go back to the problem you read at the beginning of this guideline and relate the information you have to Mr. Juan s idea of installing this led display sign. 10. Answer the following questions: a. Do you think Mr. Juan needs to be aware of the information you got from the expository class? Do you think he needs to know what a led display is and how it works in order to make the correct decision of installing one? b. What else do you think Mr. Juan needs to know if he decides to install this led display sign in his delicatessen? 8 Reflecting on and valuing the text content. Now that you have already figured out what the important aspects of the led display are, you are ready to take the next step and find out how to build a Led Display sign. 11. Read the following instructions and answer the questions below: These days creating something of your own is the in thing to do. It is both creative and economic. Get your message across in a bright, vibrant way. Learn how to make your own LED sign for display. This sign is for indoor use only as the LED strips are not waterproof. 1. Step 1 Connect the 12v AC Adapter to the LED Strip Power Connector. Then connect the LED Strip Power Connector to the first Flathead LED Strip. 2. Step 2 Two LED strips connected using a LED Strip Power Connector Bend the first strip as your project requires. Using the LED Strip Mounting Brackets, mount the strip to the mounting board of your choice. Use mounting brackets as needed. 3. Step 3 Connect the LED Strip Interconnect to the first LED Strip then to the second LED Strip. Continue to bend the strips as your project requires using the LED Strip Interconnect to connect each strip to one another. Remember to use the LED Strip Mounting Brackets to hold the strips in place as you see fit. 14

Besides understanding the problem, doing some research in order to solve it, practicing your written production and understanding how led display signs work, it is very important that you help your classmates by giving them feedback on their work. With your help, some of your classmates may achieve what they did not during their process of learning. 12. Prepare a Power Point presentation with two other friends where you briefly explain what a led display sign is, its main characteristics, the advantages this tool has and the way it would help to solve Mr. Juan s problem in his delicatessen. Present images to show what a typical electronic led display looks like. Include information you find in internet regarding how to build a led sign. 16
