3 Introduction What is SED? Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) is an electronic method of delivering your ILL articles. Instead of receiving an article by post, you will receive an (to your University Account) from the British Library containing a hyperlink to your article, which you download using a small software plugin called FileOpen. How many times can I download the article? The article can only be downloaded once. We recommend that you only download the article when it is convenient for you to print it. How long do I have to access the article? You have 14 days from the date you receive the from the British Library in which to download your article. If you have downloaded the article to your home or office PC you will then be able to view it again on the same PC for 14 days from the date you downloaded it. Please note that you can only view it on the PC that you download it to. You cannot save it to a memory stick or shared drive or open it on a different PC. If you download your article on a Library PC or SunRay you will not be able to view it again once you have logged out. You should therefore download and print your article in the same login session. After 14 days the link to your downloaded document will expire and you will be unable to access the article. 3

4 Can I print/save the article? You may make a single print copy. No further copies may be made and you may not save an electronic copy. Do I need to install any software on my PC to download SED articles? You need to have a small software plugin for Adobe Reader called FileOpen installed on the PC you intend to use to download SED articles. To download the FileOpen Plugin, go to the following website: Click on the link to download the plugin, then follow the onscreen instructions. 5 How can I check if my PC will download SED articles successfully? There is a test document on the British Library s SED FileOpen web page. Go to: and click on the link labelled Download a test document. If a File Download box appears, asking whether you wish to open or save the file, choose the Open option. After a short delay the test document (see below) should open. 5

6 If it does not open automatically you may need to switch off your PC s popup blocker. To do this, click on the yellow bar just above the British Library FileOpen Delivery Service banner, and select the option labelled download the file. Alternatively click on the link to download it manually, Always test your computer by following this procedure before attempting to download a SED Document. If you are unable to download this test document successfully, do not attempt to download an SED document. Contact the ILL Team (see page 12 for contact details) as soon as possible. 6

7 How to download your articles on a Library PC Before you attempt to download an SED article, ensure you can download the Test Document successfully (see pages 5-6) If this is successful, then you are ready to access your article as follows: Open the that you have received from archie@bl.uk containing the SED link Click on the blue click here link If the document does not appear, click on the link labelled Click here to manually download A File Download box will then appear, asking if you wish to open or save the file. Choose the Open option After a short delay the article will open If you wish to print a copy of your article, you should do so immediately after downloading. Once you have logged out of the PC you have used to download your article, you will not be able to access the article again, as all downloads are deleted at the end of each login session on library PCs Remember, you have 14 days, counting from the date you receive the containing the SED link, in which to download your document. After this time the link will expire and you will not be able to access the article 7

8 How to download your articles on your home or office PC: Before you attempt to download an SED article, ensure you can download the Test Document successfully (see pages 5-6) If this is successful, then you are ready to access your article as follows: Open the that you have received from containing the SED link Click on the blue click here link If the article does not appear, click on the link labelled Click here to manually download A File Download box will then appear, asking if you wish to open or save the file. Choose the Open option After a short delay the article will open If you wish to print a copy of your article, you should do so immediately after downloading. However, please note that it is not possible to print your article through the University s PrinterOn Service. You should therefore only download your article to your own PC or laptop if you have a printer directly connected to it. 8

9 Remember, you have 14 days, counting from the date you receive the containing the SED link, in which to download your document. After this time the link will expire and you will not be able to access the article. Once you have downloaded it you can access it as many times as you like for a 14 day period, counting from the day you downloaded it, but only on the computer you originally downloaded it to. To do this, either go back to the containing the SED link and click on the Click here link again, or save the article to a file on your computer hard drive once you have downloaded it. Please bear in mind that once the 14 day period is over the link will expire and you will no longer be able to access the article. 9

10 Points to remember when you have requested SED articles from ILL Please do not submit ILL article requests just before going home or away on holiday, unless you know you will be able to access your University Account away from University, and that the PC you will be using is capable of downloading the Test Document, otherwise there is a risk that you will not be able to access your SED articles. Remember to check your University Account regularly and clear out unwanted messages so that your account does not become over quota, otherwise you may not receive all of your articles. Always download the Test Document before attempting to download your SED articles, and if you experience any problems, do not attempt to download an SED article until the problem is resolved. If you wish to print a copy of your SED article, ensure the PC you are using is connected to a printer that is switched on and has plenty of paper in it, before you download the article Don t forget, you cannot print your SED articles through the University s PrinterOn Service. 10
