1 Project spring semester, 2008, 18hp, ABVN01 Responsible teacher, prof dr Mats Edström Architectural Conservation Design: Modernistic architecture World trade center/dwellings -project Abstract The working methods of the architect, world trade center, contemporary architecture, analysis of capacity and architecture, material studies, construction, contextual design, approach, reconstruction ethics Content and objectives The southeast coast city of Kalmar is one of the most well preserved 1600th century context in north Europe. This course focus on the developing of cultural heritage and revitalization of city structure in the historical context, The core exercise is to improve the asset of cultural heritage through new building, The project to develop the architecture of a World Trade center in combination of housing area suggests sigths with waters-context. Sights are to be developed in connection with the beautiful nature of Malmfjärden as well as the harbor area on the east coast straight of Kalmarsund. Proposals should develop modern architecture and use reflecting the newsness, strengthened the timeline of the city and integrating in city structure of today. 2 Preserved parts of the fortification structures and walls.. Society changes and our demands on old houses calls for transformations. Architecture is needed to form the new demands, How do we form the newsness? How can we design a sustainability, modern and in a gentle context with the valuable old architecture? How can materials, constructions and surfaces are be developed in detail? How can the diversity of this old town be developed based upon the historical qualities, adding a new lever to history? Area and project proposal Grundstrukturer som kvartersindelning, gator, platser på Kvarholmen i Kalmar har till stor del bevarat 1600-talets stadsmönster. Många byggnader från 16-, och 1700 talet ger stadsbilden en prägel av autenticitet och historisk stämning. Kompletteringar under 18- och 1900-talet har bidragit till att utveckla stadens mångfald på ett positivt sätt med få undantag. Projektet utvecklar aktuella utvecklingsprojekt för att etablera ett nytt World trade center samt bostäder och handelsfunktioner i ett projekt vid Malmfjärden alternativt vid östra sidan av Kvarnholmen. Historical background The citycenter of Kalmar is based upon the baroque design of fortification/townplanner Nikodemus Tessin d ä and Johan Wärnschöld. In mid 17 th century Plan originates from the topography and shape of the original island and its nine shape form. The city structure from the 17 th century are well preserved having been able to insert architectural contributions from all centuries in an amazing way. Later in 19 th century the trade was main focus in the developing and later a county center and a trade center for the region. 2

The projects consist of a challenge to develop a large size building on the harbor area in the eastern part or on the north-western edge. Modern museum, Stockholm, contextual architecture by Rafael Moneo Projectdeveloping The project is developed through scientific research and analysis such as Cullen, SAVE etc, The architectural process calls for firm background studies, objective analysis and a creative form process in architecture. Project-input with lectures, seminars and excursions are arranged in the attached course ABVN01. Participations are made by leading architects working in the field of contextual architecture 3

4 Malmfjärden and parking areas to be developed on the Kvarnholmen city center. Plan of work The project is introduced with a field study and inventory of existing structures. Already in an early stage we will make a sketch for a reconstruction and or an addition, a study which we will use to go deeper in the inventory and the analysis on site. The project is divided in three parts 1. Pre-studies. We adapt graphical methods of investigation to study the specific character of the existing architecture. We register problems and identify and make programmes for the needs of reconstruction and expansion. 2. Constructional analysis We compose our inventory and present pictures of the constructions concerning problems, qualities and capacity. We make a description of goals and visions for the new function and present and analysis. 3. Project We sketch on the renewal in relation to the existing architecture. We make models and studies in materials and constructions to precise our choice of design. During the project we will visit actual reconstructions to see and evaluate modern views of reconstruction and renovation. Way of work, excursion and final presentation After the introduction and choice of object you will develop your own assignment with deeper studies of detail and extracts of the building. We have schedule a part of the course with a focus on theory and lectures with references. The study trip includes site analysis of international examples on the theme and the meeting of old and new architecture. This excursion to New York City will involve meetings with architects and architectural offices on sites. Question of materials are of special importance in the meeting between old and new and are therefore given special attention during the project. At the final presentation you will be asked to present a model or examples of materials together with your drawings. At the assessment you will present your work in modern techniques of presentation. The course will give you training in the use of these means. Associates The project is planned in cooperation with the City Planning Board and the City Architect. The course contains a phase of inspiration and gathering of knowledge with material from architectural practice and guest lectures in collaboration with the other fields in the Division of Architecture, Conservation and Restoration Design. 4

5 Evaluation etc At the final assessment the project and the work process are evaluated with the grades Passed / Not passed. The ground requirements for the evaluation are active participation during the project and final assessment.
