Developed by The Jed Foundation & SPRC, 2006.
Goal To increase the likelihood that a student who needs supportive services or counseling will seek out and secure assistance
Goals To respond effectively to students who are acutely distressed or having thoughts of suicide To help survivors deal with grief and confusion and to promote open/direct talk about suicide to reduce the taboo/stigma for receiving help
Goal To promote the development of skills that will assist students as they face various challenges in school and in life
Goal To promote relationship building between students, staff, and faculty and a sense of community on campus
Goal To identify those students who may have mental health problems, be at risk for mental health problems, or be at risk for suicide
Goals To ensure that students who need services receive them To ensure services are appropriate and of high quality To assess and manage suicide risk
Goal To limit access to potential sites, weapons, and other agents that may facilitate dying by suicide
Representatives from dean s office, counseling center, res life, ADE, disability services, campus security, or others Meets regularly to discuss students of concern (more often if immediate concerns arise) Students referred as a result of disciplinary actions, faculty/staff concerns, student concerns, or parent concerns Counseling Center role is consultation to the committee, not as an informant regarding their current clients Team determines recommendations and plan of action for students who appear to be a threat to themselves or the campus community
Campus Resource Guide Detailed resource that offers options to tailor your team to the needs of your institution.
(like Virginia Tech murder/suicide) Text message alert system alert system Website alert updates Business Continuation Planning Committee: Risk Management, Campus Security, Facility Management, Tech resources, Student Affairs BIT/TAT, Human Resources, Communications Office.
Effects can extend far beyond the physical communities in which they occur Media coverage is extensive and intrusive Critical to provide intervention for 1 st responders and key personnel who will experience compassion fatigue Friends, family members, and community members are also psychologically affected even if they are not physically effected or even directly linked to the crisis
Heroic phase Initial delivery of emergency crisis intervention Honeymoon phase Frequent and considerable attention from the community and media Disillusionment phase Individuals struggle with bureaucracy, personal attention wanes, feelings - hopelessness & abandonment Young MA. Responding to communities in crisis. The training manual of the NOVA crisis response team. 2nd edition. National Organization for Victim Assistance, Washington, DC, 1998.
Demonstrate readiness to apply professional skills to a range of emergency situations Participate in CEUs to update knowledge in areas relevant to emergency response Provide guidance regarding emotional response to crisis and critical incidents You re the expert! Know your PR personnel!
Develop relationships with other potential campus resources that can assist with crisis intervention (nursing faculty, university ministries, etc) Develop crisis protocols for your department Develop a consortium of mental health professionals within a reasonable radius of campus that could offer support
