1 New Deal ISD SPECIAL PROGRAMS The district provides special programs for gifted and talented students, homeless students, bilingual students, migrant students, students with limited English proficiency, dyslexic students, and students with disabilities. The coordinator of each program can answer questions about eligibility requirements, as well as programs and services offered in the district or by other organizations. Career and Technical Education (CTE) (Mrs. Trisha Williams) The purposes and intents of the program are to develop new and/or improve CTE programs with the full participation of individuals who are members of special populations. Funds shall be used to provide CTE programs of such size, scope, and quality as to be effective; integrate academic and CTE education; and provide equitable participation in CTE programs for special population students. The basis for planning and conducting Career and Technical Education in Texas is for students to have access through sequences of courses designed for a career concentration so students achieve both academic and occupational competencies. Career and technical programs are dedicated to preparing young people to manage the dual roles of family member and wage earner. Career and technical programs enable students to gain entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job and/or to continue their education.

2 Dyslexia (Mrs. Rebecca Cooper) The Dyslexia program ensures that procedures for identifying students with dyslexia or a related disorder are in place and provides appropriate instructional services to the students in a structured class setting on the identified student s campus. The major instructional strategies should utilize individualized, intensive, multi-sensory methods, and contain writing and spelling components. English as a Second Language (ESL) (Mrs. Rebecca Cooper) The intents and purposes of the ESL Program are to identify limited English proficient (LEP) students; provide English as a second language (ESL) programs; ensure that LEP students are afforded full opportunity to master the essential skills and knowledge required by the state; and assess achievement of these students to ensure accountability for LEP students and the schools that serve them. Gifted and Talented Education (Mrs. Shelley Carver) The purpose of the state gifted and talented program is to identify students and provide programs for a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who: exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area, possesses an unusual capacity for leadership or excels in a specific field.

3 Title 1, Part D, Subpart 2, Prevention and Intervention Programs for Children and Youth Who are Neglected, Delinquent, or At Risk of Dropping Out (Mr. Matt Reed) The purpose of this subpart is to support the operation of district programs that involve collaboration with locally operated correctional facilities to carry out high quality education programs to prepare youth for secondary school completion, training, employment, or further education; provide activities to facilitate the transition of youth from the correctional program; and operate dropout prevention programs in local schools for youth at risk of dropping out of school and youth returning from correctional facilities. Title II, Part A, Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund (TPTR) (Mr. Matt Reed) The intent and purposes of the Title II, Part A, Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund is to increase student academic achievement through improving teacher and principal quality and increasing the number of highly qualified teachers in classrooms and highly qualified principals and assistant principals in schools, and hold local education agencies and schools accountable for improving student academic achievement.

4 Title IV, Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities (Mrs. Trisha Williams) The purpose of the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities program is to support programs that prevent violence in and around schools; prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; involve parents; and coordinate with related federal, state, community efforts and resources to promote safe and drug-free schools and communities. Special Education (HONDA Shared Services) (Mr. Gerry Etchison) The purpose and intent of the program is to ensure that all students with disabilities have available a free, appropriate public education which includes special education and related services to meet their unique needs. New Deal I.S.D. provides special education and related services for students with disabilities according to individualized plans developed by teachers, parents, counselors, and other professionals. You may request an evaluation of your child to determine eligibility for special education at any time. Eligibility for special education is determined after a comprehensive assessment has been completed. 5 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) (Mr. Matt Reed, STEM Director; Mr. Kyle Conatser, STEM Coordinator) New Deal ISD participates in a state network of STEM academies through a partnership with the Texas Education Agency and Educate Texas in order to develop and share best practices for small and rural schools to create a college going culture for students. With a focus on the STEM education and career fields science, technology, engineering, and math this program promotes a culture of rigor, relevance, and relationships to foster graduates from New Deal ISD ready to compete in post-secondary education and career avenues in the 21 st century. State Compensatory Education (SCE) (Mrs. Trisha Williams) The purpose and intents of the program are to improve and enhance the regular education program for students who are at risk of dropping out of school. The role of the program in improving student achievement is to provide accelerated instruction and support programs for students in at-risk situations. Through appropriate compensatory and accelerated instruction services, students in at-risk situations will pass the state assessments and graduate from high school.
