Using Anonymous Mobile Device Data to Understand In-Store Activity A White Paper by AirTight Networks, Inc. 339 N. Bernardo Avenue, Suite 200, Mountain View, CA AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved.

Executive Summary A rapidly growing number of consumers now routinely carry and use mobile smartphones and tablets inside retail environments that offer in-store Wi-Fi. They are increasingly looking for a more personal shopping experience and are using mobile smartphones and tablets (and their ability to interact simultaneously in the online and offline world ) as a means to achieve this. This trend is leveling the playing field for many retail stores and restaurants allowing them to compete more effectively against online stores and to engage their customers in many new and exciting ways. One aspect of Wi-Fi that is generating much interest in the retail industry is mobile analytics which measures the presence and behavior of mobile device users and provides retailers with a new wealth of data related to customer perception of the brand, staying power, and loyalty. Depending on how well it is collected, analyzed, and presented, this data can be a valuable asset for retail marketers and strategists as well as operations teams. This white paper examines multiple examples of anonymous retail analytics using data collected via instore access points/sensors and describes how this data can be used to help retailers understand what is happening at their locations. It also addresses the issue of protecting consumer rights and privacy by providing a better understanding of the type of data used by mobile analytics and the methods through which retailers can create and improve their opt-in customer engagement programs with this insight. What are Visibility and Association Analytics? Visibility and Association analytics are anonymous statistics collected via AirTight wireless access points/sensors. This data provides insight into wireless client behavior within range of the sensors. Visibility analytics rely on the fact that mobile smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices that have Wi-Fi turned on will send beacons to any access point within its range, meaning the device is visible to the access point even if it does not connect to it. Association analytics includes additional information collected from clients that are connected directly to an access point SSID. What Information is Collected? Both Visibility and Association analytics data is stored in files that contain details about the location of the client device (including time zone), the access point that sees it, the best reported RSSI value of the device, the session duration, and a time stamp indicating the end of the session. Association analytics data files also contain SSID, protocol, data transfer to and from the client, data rate, smart device type, and domains accessed. Is this Personally Identifiable Information? No. It is important to note that no personally identifiable information is collected or used for anonymous analytics. The MAC address of the client device (which our system uses as the primary data point from which all other details are collected) is fully obscured using a one-way hashing algorithm and cannot be derived from the downloaded file. Hashing is a process that scrambles a set of data, and a one-way hashing algorithm means that data which has been scrambled cannot be reconstituted. This is done to protect the privacy of the clients and to protect organizations from potential data leaks AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 2

All data described in this whitepaper, including Association analytics data that covers users who voluntarily opt-in when connecting to an SSID, is completely anonymous. No MAC addresses or personally identifiable information is included in any data files, reports, or transmissions mentioned in this document. How is the Data Accessed? Retailers can download both analytics files from the AirTight Management Console. The files are in a.csv (comma separated value) format. These are flat table files that can be used with Microsoft Excel or other table and graphing software or uploaded into a variety of CRM or data storage systems. Users can also view visibility statistics from the AirTight Guest Manager interface via interactive graphs. Users leveraging table and graphing software such as Excel, can manipulate the data by applying various formulas and converting the data points using the pivot table function, which is a summarization tool used for data visualization. Pivot tables can then be rendered into various graphs (bar, line, pie, etc.). About this Document This whitepaper describes various concepts that can be understood by utilizing these analytics. A concept is defined as any specific perspective that can be used to derive a certain behavior trait of the clients within the dataset. This document will also show a sample graph for each concept, list additional graphs related to the concept, and provide information on the concept s purpose. Use cases are included to provide additional context. Note: Keep in mind that additional use cases can be created by comparing multiple graphs. These tend to be the most powerful and most useful cases and this document will provide direction for creating these whenever possible AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 3

Dwell Time Dwell Time refers to the amount of time a client spends within range of the access point. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Dwell Time by Day (pictured) Dwell Time by Location Insta-day Dwell time Dwell Time helps organizations understand the amount of time their clients spend at any given location. Understanding this is important because it cannot be derived from POS statistics or counter systems attached to doors, which only show the volume of clients. With Dwell Time, an organization can see how much value their clients add based on the time spent within their store, which can help drive marketing efforts to promote a certain atmosphere. It can also be used to judge the effectiveness of staff depending on the targeted strategy of how long a typical client should be present. Our staff suggests that sales are down in our casual dining restaurant because patrons tend to sit at their tables for very long periods of time without ordering. Dwell Time helps lend credence to these observations so the restaurant can implement an appropriate response. Locations A, B, and C report a high number of clients spending Less than 5 minutes but POS statistics are consistent among all locations. Combining this with distance graphs can help decrease the abandonment rate by determining if staffing needs to be increased to accommodate clients who enter but quickly leave after seeing how busy the store is. We want to promote the idea that our clients can get what they need quickly and will not have to spend more than 30 minutes in our store. This is a competitive edge that represents our brand and Dwell Time helps show how well we maintain this strategy AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 4

Foot Traffic Foot Traffic refers to the time periods during which a client is within range of the access point. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Foot Traffic by Date (pictured) Foot Traffic by Location Insta-day Foot Traffic Foot Traffic helps organizations understand when their clients spend time at any given location. Understanding this is important because it helps organizations see when clients decide to visit, which has an impact on a variety of needs including staffing, logistics and deliveries, and marketing direction. It can show an organization what times of the day are most valuable to their clients and what they perceive is the most appropriate time to visit. Despite comparative sales among all locations, we can now see that stores located in downtown urban areas have spikes in visit times during lunch periods and shortly after 5 p.m. This helps us make appropriate staffing decisions to handle the ebbs and flows of these particular markets to maximize our efforts during those time periods. As a QSR we are deciding whether or not to pursue a strategy which would emphasize our lunch menu. By using Foot Traffic data we can see the effectiveness of this strategy, as well as the best places to implement actions based on current behavior AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 5

Loyalty Loyalty refers to the number of times any given client has a repeat visit within range of the access point within the timeframe of the dataset. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Intra-day Repeat Users (pictured) Repeat Users per Location Single-Time Visitors per Day Single-Time Visitors per Timeslot Loyalty graphs help an organization gauge the general loyalty of their clients by seeing how often they return within a certain period of time. This perspective is very important because marketing campaigns differ greatly when targeting loyal versus non-loyal clients. These graphs show not just the breakdown of these groups, but can also be used to understand the behavior of each group. This also helps determine the difference between repeat visits and repeat purchases and how well a store performs. Each location has targeted goals specifying how many customers should return for another visit. We are pushing out a new campaign targeted at non-loyal customers. We want to see the effects of that campaign in attracting this demographic to our stores With Loyalty analytics, we can perform A/B testing with various posters in our window and see real world feedback on how well they attract users to return, thus saving time and money by not having to perform focus-group testing as well as implementing new ideas quicker AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 6

Engagement Engagement refers to clients that come within a certain distance from the access point indicating they have entered the store or a specific location in a store rather than simply passing by. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Comparison: Passerby vs. Engaged; Total Visits per Day Comparison: Passerby vs. Engaged; Unique Visits per Day Percent Capture Rate per Day (pictured) Engagement graphs provide a unique way to perceive lost potential opportunities. By noting the best recorded received signal, strength indicator (RSSI) value of the device, we can determine the closest point a client reached relative to the access point. By understanding the approximate RSSI value at a certain physical point (say the doorway or area directly in front of a counter) we can derive how many clients passed that threshold, essentially showing us how many clients we engaged versus those who simply pass by. Capture rate is determined by both RSSI value (those within a specific range) as well as time (those who spend an appropriate amount of time at the store). Note: This rate will be highly dependent on physical placement of the access point and an appropriate time period. Be cautious of one-size-fits-all or other solutions that don t allow you to customize these figures. We want to know how many people walk by our store and do not walk in. Will changing the storefront displays affect this rate? We just deployed a new area of the store near our access point featuring a new brand/product/service. How effective is the display? How many people walk into our store but walk out immediately? 2013 AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 7

Trend Trend refers to changes over time. Theoretically one could create a trend for any graph available to see how that dataset changes. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Foot Traffic Trend per Day; 4 week cycle (pictured) Foot Traffic Trend per Location; 4 week cycle Single-Time Trend per Day; First Time Visit Single-Time Trend per Location; First Location Trend analytics allows us to compare progress over time and better understand consistency. Whenever data is shown to change unexpectedly, one can dig in deeper to see the potential cause. Trending is a primary way to determine how well a particular location or strategy is working, and most departments utilize trends to demonstrate proficiency. After implementing a strategy to attract new customers by offering weekend promotions, we would like to see how well our weekend visits have increased. A trend in declining sales figures has been seen for a variety of locations. Are we experiencing a dip in actual customer visits, or are our prices/sales personnel discouraging new sales? 2013 AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 8

Comparision Comparison graphs give a platform for understanding averages across the organization and using them to relate to the total figures. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Average Visitors per Store per Day (pictured) Total Visitors per Store per Day Unique Visitors per Store per Day Net-New Visits per Store per Day (Day 1 as Baseline) Generally speaking, an organization needs to create a baseline on top of which all comparisons can be made. It s important to be able to derive average behavior, not in the sense of mediocrity but rather to see how well or how poorly stores compare to their counterparts. Within a store, one can also create comparisons to see how a single store or a group of stores progresses. Unique visits and net-new visits show how many actual people came in (rather than volume of visits) and how many new visits were gathered over the course of the dataset, respectively. Why does Location A consistently outperform the average store? How can we apply their strategy to stores that struggle? Despite similar POS and total visitor statistics, Location B only has half as many unique visitors per day compared to Location C. Location B must have more loyal, repeatable customers while Location C is adept at attracting new customers. How can I apply both of their talents to the larger strategy? 2013 AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 9

Area Density Area Density refers to an understanding of where clients go and behave within a store relative to the access points. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations, or filtered on specific locations and/or dates. Area Density; Aggregated Data Area Distribution by Sensor Area Density by Time Period; Aggregated Data (pictured) Area Density by Duration; Aggregated Data Area Density can provide some perspective related to approximately where clients are within a certain store. By recognizing that clients details are recorded by a single access point, we can derive approximately where a client travels throughout the store and thus understand popular areas and statistics about certain areas of the store. Note: Measuring client traffic by location is a highly sought after statistic but many vendor claims regarding precision location tracking are prone to exaggeration. The concept described here is NOT about tracking customers nor is it about being able to pinpoint exactly where a specific client is. This type of precision tracking would require additional sensing devices and in some cases video cameras. When used without visitor permission, precision tracking can be a violation of individual privacy. We have a large multi-floor location and we want to understand how many clients visit one floor versus visiting all floors during their visit. Does a trend exist between a specific zone and how much time a typical client spends there? 2013 AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 10

Traffic Traffic refers to the amount of data transfer that occurs per client associated to the access point. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations or filtered on specific locations, dates, and SSIDs. Location-wise Wi-Fi Data Transfer by Time Period Location-wise Wi-Fi Data Transfer (pictured) Traffic helps the organization understand how much bandwidth each location is serving to Wi-Fi clients and the total usage. This speaks specifically to which locations have the most Wi-Fi users, which helps determine not just marketing strategies, but also where bandwidth should be allocated (and where it can be lessened) given Wi-Fi usage behavior. When working under a tight budget, IT can make informed decisions about where network upgrades will be the most effective. While rolling out our new Wi-Fi strategy, we can zero in on our most successful sites and highlight them to encourage more Wi-Fi use in other locations AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 11

Wi-Fi Sessions Wi-Fi Sessions refers to the amount of time each client stays associated to the wireless network. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations or filtered on specific locations, dates, and SSIDs. Daily Wi-Fi Sessions Location-wise Wi-Fi Sessions (pictured) Intra-day Wi-Fi Session Distribution Wi-Fi Sessions shows the amount of time each client spends connected to the wireless network. This provides a great perspective on how much time a client allocates to a particular visit to a store. Longer browsing times suggest visitors plan on spending larger quantities of time at the store, which can validate or adjust image building strategies. Browsing times can also suggest approximate times needed for competitive lookups, which can be used to drive in-store customer engagement. We want to create a more comfortable atmosphere for our customers to enjoy, knowing that if we double their staying time we can double our sales. How can we determine which areas are best to target first, given how customers already feel about staying in our store? We see a large quantity of users connecting for short periods of time. As a retailer this suggests that our customers are increasingly checking competitive prices online. We should adjust our in-store strategy to prevent loss of sale due to these searches AirTight Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. 12

Wi-Fi Users Wi-Fi Users refers to the time periods when clients are associated to the wireless network. These graphs can be used to see aggregated data across all locations or filtered on specific locations, dates, and SSIDs. Daily Wi-Fi Users Location-wise Wi-Fi Users (pictured) Intra-day Wi-Fi User Distribution Wi-Fi Users provides additional insight into the usage behavior of the client, primarily the time periods during which clients access the wireless network. Typically this can be combined with Wi-Fi Sessions to derive in-store staying power, meaning organizations can determine what value their customers attribute to the store in terms of their personal time. By seeing when users are connected, an organization can better predict when their stores will be busiest and most full. After seeing a steady trend of users connecting to Wi-Fi during lunch hours, we were able to justify expanding the physical space to accommodate the increased traffic. A variety of locations are experiencing increased Wi-Fi users during late night time periods, suggesting we should create a wider selection of products to sell during this period to expand this trend to all stores AirTight Networks, Inc. For more information, please visit: Conclusion Visibility and association analytics generated using in-store wireless access points/sensors will provide retailers with a clearer understanding of visitor and customer behavior as well as immediate and historical data that can be used to assess the performance of separate opt-in programs, in-store promotions, and customer services. By understanding this behavior through anonymous mobile analytics, retailers are in the best position to define a deeper, more intimate personal relationship with their customers. This overwhelmingly creates an atmosphere of trust and loyalty, allowing retailers to then use their opt-in programs to learn more about the customer personally, while providing the best incentives to the customer in exchange for that data. The relationship continues to grow and both parties benefit from it significantly. The accuracy and usability of the data will continue to improve as the percentage of consumers who carry and use Wi-Fi equipped mobile devices grows and as analytics and reporting features become more sophisticated. AirTight Networks is pioneering the emerging field of in-store Wi-Fi analytics and is an industry leader in cloud-managed, multi-site retail Wi-Fi networks and wireless intrusion prevention systems (WIPS). AirTight s Wi-Fi, WIPS, and analysis technologies follow principles and best practices designed to protect wireless infrastructures and users against intrusions, privacy breaches, and a wide range of other security risks.
