CLOUD-BASED COMPUTING BY JARED MILLER 3/9/15
THE TERM CLOUD Where did this term cloud actually come from? What is this term used to describe? When did this term become populuar?
WHERE DID THE TERM COME FROM? The actual origin of the term is unknown. It is mainly used as a science expression. In science, it is usually used to describe a large compound of objects that you can see from a distance but they appear as a cloud. This cloud may describe a number of things whose details or info that has not yet been investigated or looked into further.
WHAT ELSE DOES IT MEAN? Could also be used to explain many of the old programs on computers. Many of the network schematic icons would draw circles around the programs to connect them. The shape these connections made would resemble a cloud. The term cloud soon became a metaphor for the internet, and the shape of a cloud was used to denote network or telephony schematics.
WHEN IT BECAME POPULAR Around 1994, the cloud symbol was used to represent the Internet. This showed that the servers were connected externally to the cloud. One of the first references to the cloud appeared in 1996, with a mention in a Compaq internal document. Big popularization of term followed back to 2006 when Amazon.com first introduced the Elastic Compute Cloud.
HOW THE CLOUD WORKS. The cloud computing system is divided into two different sections First is the front end. Next is the back end. Both parts are connected through a network, which would be the internet.

THE FRONT END Typically includes the users computer. Also includes the application required to access the cloud system. It is important to remember that not all cloud-based computing systems have the same user interface. For example, a web-based program will have a very different interface than web browswer.
THE BACK END Made up of many different types storage systems, servers and computer systems. As a whole, the cloud-based computing system could include almost every computer program we can think of. Programs can range from processing data to high-level video games. Each application typically has own dedicated server
HOW TO HELP CONTROL THE CLOUD. A central server is usually in charge of administering the system. The server is programmed to listen and follow to set protocols. Also uses software called middleware. Middleware allows the computers that have been networked together to communicate to each other.
VIRTUALIZATION Most times, cloud serves don t run at full capacity This means there is a lot of processing power used, but going to waste. It is possible to trick one of these physical servers to make it think that it is actually multiple servers., each with its own operating system. Using this technique, you can get the most output out of each individual server, which helps reduce needs for more physical machines.
REDUNDANCY This is the process of making copies for back onto the servers being used. The cloud makes backup data in case some data is lost or impossible to get to. Important to have backups in case a users computer crashes or breaks down.
ADVANTAGES OF CLOUD COMPUTING Cloud computing is cost efficient Great amount of storage space on the cloud Its easy to back up and recover data Automatic software integration Easy to access the cloud from where you are Quick deployment of the cloud
DISADVANTAGES OF USING THE CLOUD Concerns about internet security Some compatibility issues between older IT systems Compliance of the cloud. The standardization of cloud technology Being able to monitor the cloud
