1 Doctoral Program in Urban and Architectural Design XXVII Cycle

2 1. Objectives of the Doctoral Program The models and paradigms affecting the development of Western cities during the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent reforms they generated in the 20 th century in order to meet their specific transformation dynamics seem inadequate to control the current transformation phase of cities, which features two important aspects: - The irreversible decline of the built-up model, linked to the concept of consolidated urban polarities development, raising the problem of finding innovative and more advanced models; - Space and built-up areas de-formation phenomena, accelerated by the proliferation of road, transportation and technological infrastructures which, despite their articulated interconnections, lead to segregation, fragmentation and homologation effects of these areas, deleting the characteristic wealth of their architectural, urban and environmental structures. The complexity of the phenomena affecting the diffuse metropolitan areas within and outside Europe, requires architectural and urban disciplines to critically review and the consequent attunement of architectural design theoretical, methodological and application tools in the direction of their inevitable actualization in order to properly identify the transformation and residential dynamics of contemporary cities, aiming at a different approach to the interpretation of the morphology of territories, fabrics and networks, to the definition of typological, utility and communications contents as well as to the technical implementation consistency and the levels of artificiality involved in designing new areas and works. The goal of the Architectural and Urban Design Doctoral program is the definition of theoretical and operating tools capable of defining the concise and strategic value of architectural and urban design as an inter-scalar and pre-figurative procedure of a new coincidence between formal structures, utility contents and functional requirements for the reconstruction of urban social life environments, residential symbolic references, and the forms of expression of the infrastructures framework. The Doctoral program in Architectural and Urban Design aims at being a specific venue for the promotion of studies and research on the aforementioned theoretical, methodological and operational reconstruction through the proliferation of theoretical concepts and field experiments as well as on the verification of an effective match between them. The Doctoral program pursues a line of research focused on the relation between theoretical practice and operational practice in architectural and urban design through the integration of: - The research on architectural and urban design paradigms where the in-depth analysis of the contents of the specific disciplines dialectically confronts the necessary connections with parallel outlooks and skills, whose integration seems necessary for the development of the coreproblems; - Applied design research, where design is considered as the drive and the result of a research program to be pursued as the development of a problematic assumption, the result of a knowledge process aimed at interpreting the contextual reasons and identifying a critical path strongly related to theoretical statements and sample thematic reference structures. According to this methodological procedure the DrPAU program aims at training researchers and professionals specifically qualified to meet the new problematic landscape and formulate appropriate responses through the development of the theoretical methodological and operational tools required. 2. Contents of the Doctoral Program The new forms of citizenship caused by globalization require architectural and urban design to research and identify intervention modes related, on one hand, to the definition of areas, constructions and terminal nodes of connection networks, and on the livability of urban and builtup fabrics on the other. The consequent search for new paradigms and theoretical and application skills in architectural design are critically reviewed in order to reconstitute the conceptual apparatuses as well as the 2

3 methods and operating tools needed to architecturally qualify the mutual graft of global reticular technical areas and inhabited areas in the local fabrics. The main focus of the Doctoral program research is therefore the scale of contemporary cities, With its relationship created in each case between local configurations and global structures of the built-up areas involved, in its different aspects with particular reference to the features of the architectural structures, the fabrics, the open spaces and intervals typical of contemporary urban and built-up areas. Therefore the Doctoral program theoretical and application research analyzes the following problem areas: - the identification of the scales involved in architectural and urban design, historical poles, in the consolidated city, in internal urban borders and in the peri-urban areas where the disintegration of the countryside requires a new design of its open spaces; - the definition of prototypes for the new urban functions, design methods for the new morphological relations between fabrics and networks, to the regeneration and transformation of diffuse built-up areas, the definition of open and built-up public spaces; - landscape qualification of large network infrastructures highlighting, in particular, the perception and livability problem of the mutual and separated environments of the natural landscapes and technical environments. Starting from the aforementioned problematic assumptions, the Doctoral program is centered on three research areas, dictating the development of the dissertation subjects and the common theoretical and design activities: 1- Architecture of the nodes, infrastructure networks and the affected environments and landscapes; 2- Transformation, regeneration, value enhancement of the marginal areas in contemporary in contemporary urban settlements; 3- Architecture of public places and new urban centers. The Doctoral program curriculum consists of courses, seminars, application workshops, internships at Universities and research institutes in Italy and abroad. The introductory and basic courses are held during the first year and the first semester of the second year; research-oriented specialty training starts in the first year, and progressively increases over the two following years. Introductory and specialty training includes activities coordinated with the Doctoral programs created in the Architecture and Planning Department, and is supported by its workshop and research facilities. Specialty activities require students to attend at least one course organized by the Doctoral School, and to follow an internship at a foreign University or a research institute. The three Architectural and Urban Design Workshops are held over the first three semesters of the Doctoral Program and are paired with two international seminars centered on the problematic core areas and the related development of new related disciplinary and transversal approaches with the contribution of architects, scholars and experts as well as with the active participation of the students. Architectural and Urban Design Workshops are held in Italian and English; Englishspeaking tutors are available for foreign Students. Working time for the dissertation research increases each year and dissertation activities are supported by a Supervisor and verified by the Teachers Committee at selected milestones. 2.1 Opportunities upon completion - University researchers and teachers in the SSDs of the Doctoral program; - Researchers with an excellent scientific profile in the field of complex urban contexts redevelopment and transformation design interventions; - Managers in public organizations and agencies at different institutional levels, with a focus on design interventions control/ evaluation and/or program development; - Independent professionals qualified in the management of highly complex design processes. 3
