3 Why Students Should Participate in the Agriscience Fair In addition to financial incentives, Agriscience Fair participants who progress to the State FFA Convention will have an opportunity to be recognized on stage in front of their peers. These students also will be included in a special event at Devon Energy Center during the convention, where they can discuss their projects with company officials. Here are some other great reasons to participate! Looks great on college applications. It will help you develop your writing, communication and self-directed learning skills, which are useful skills in college and for future career success. The Agriscience Fair is an ideal platform for career exploration and preparation. You get to meet students with shared interests. Win scholarships. You learn a ton and have a blast. Agriscience Fair projects are cross-curricular activities. Through completing a project, you can support or improve your knowledge and skills in other subjects like math, science and English. Agriscience projects can count as your Supervised Agricultural Experience Program. At both the state and national levels, you can now compete in three Agriscience proficiency award areas and in the Agriscience Star award area. The three proficiency award areas are: 1. Agriscience Research Animal Systems 2. Agriscience Research Integrated Systems 3. Agriscience Research Plant Systems Agriscience projects can contribute to your Career Development Event projects or teams. 4 Devon Energy Agriscience Initiative The Devon Agriscience Initiative seeks to build on the shared commitment both agriculture and the oil and gas industries have when it comes to conservation and protecting land and natural resources. The partnership between Oklahoma FFA and Devon Energy provides educational opportunities and incentives for agriculture education students and teachers to research, develop, conduct and evaluate projects associated with environmental stewardship, natural resource systems and power, structural and technical systems for the Oklahoma FFA Agriscience Fair. As part of the initiative, students are encouraged to select topics focused on technologies that agriculture and oil and gas have in common. Constructive projects that focus on win-win solutions for both industries are preferred. Encouraging these fields of study helps agriculture education students and FFA members explore and seek opportunities in the workforce. Aligning Devon s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education initiatives with FFA and agriculture education also encourages academic work that could lead these students to consider pursuing energy-related careers. Examples include, but are not limited to: New ways to manage water that can be applied by the agriculture and oil and gas industries (Ex: Examine how the oil and gas industry reuses and recycles water and how these water conservation techniques could benefit or be applied in the agricultural industry.) Natural gas as a fuel source for crop drying or agricultural equipment (Ex: Consider infrastructure or equipment adaptation. What is the effect on horse power or heating values?) Various agricultural uses for soil cuttings produced in oil/gas operations How surplus oil and gas equipment could be used in agricultural operations, or vice versa (Ex. drill pipe used as fencing) Geology s role in agriculture or crop performance Agricultural engineering solutions that can be applied to oil and gas operations, or vice versa New methods to control dust generated by oil and gas operations Possible correlation between geologic patterns over time and livestock production rates or types of livestock produced (Ex: Are geological formations tied to deer movements?) 2

5 Agricultural and habitat considerations during the well-site reclamation process (Ex: How do habitat strips planned before, during and/or after drilling affect quail populations? Ex: Should different types of material be used for different types of crops or livestock? Consider how the seeds of certain materials facilitate the growth of undesirable weeds.) Ways to address wind/water erosion at well sites (Ex: Compare oil and gas dust control methods with those used in agriculture, such as on confined animal feeding operations.) Right now is as good a time as any...let s get started! Steps to Completing an Agriscience Fair Project 1. Select a topic/ask a question 2. Complete background research, literature review, and introduction 3. Develop your hypothesis 4. Design your experiment 5. Execute experiment and collect data 6. Analyze results 7. 7 Oklahoma FFA Association Agriscience Fair Information Pre-Registration Required The one-page registration form is due postmarked to the State FFA Office April 1. Mail or fax the entry form to: Wayne Stricklin Agriscience Fair Superintendent Oklahoma Department of CareerTech 1500 West Seventh Avenue Stillwater, OK Kathie Short FAX: General Guidelines The State FFA Agriscience Fair competition will take place on the OSU campus, Friday, April 22, For the specific set-up time, location and additional details, check the OSU Career Development Event website after February 1. Participants must be available during the judging process for an interview. The interview is an opportunity for the judges to ask questions about your project. Interviews for Agriscience Fair participants will normally be 5 minutes in length and will not exceed 15 minutes. Division winners at the state FFA interscholastic competition are required to exhibit their entries in the Career Show at the State FFA Convention the following week. Set up in the Career Show, first floor, Exhibit Hall C, will take place between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, Division winners will be recognized on stage in the Cox Arena during the First General Session Tuesday, April 26, 10 a.m. Division winners are expected to attend the Agrisccience Fair Division Winner Banquet at Devon Energy Center, Tuesday, April 26, 5 p.m. Agriscience Fair Division winners are not expected to attend the CDE Breakfast Wednesday morning. Rules Rules for the Oklahoma FFA Agriscience Fair will follow National FFA Agriscience Fair guidelines.
