2 Anne Marie Smith joined the UNM Northern TTAP Farmington office in February. She is our Inclusion Consultant and Trainer for the Farmington- Gallup-Grants area. Prior to her work at the TTAP she had been an early childhood consultant in New England for over twenty years. She has taught infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, as well as early childhood professionals at the community college level. Her extensive history of partnerships with many community organizations, including Head Start, will make her an asset for all the programs she serves. She utilizes kindness, humor, and her insight to empower teachers in their work including all children. Josie Salas was born and raised in rural, northern New Mexico. She has three grown children and one adorable four year old granddaughter. She spent 25 years as an early childhood educator, primarily in California. She then went on to work as a NM Pre-K monitor for the past seven years. Josie is a Consultant and Trainer currently based in Taos and serving Raton, Las Vegas, Espanola, Taos, Santa Fe and Moriarty. With such a wide variety of communities, her knowledge of northern New Mexico and familiarity with its programs will be a great blessing to those educators she trains and supports. Diane Zimmerer recently returned to the southwest from New Orleans, LA where she lived for four years. Diane has a background in Training Coordination for Quality Rating and Improvement Systems in both Louisiana and Colorado. In addition to her experience as a consultant, she was previously the Director and Teacher at the Early Childhood Enrichment Center and the Lead Infant Teacher with the Southern Ute Montessori Early Head Start. She is the newest member of our team and is another Training Consultant based out of our Farmington office. She is excited to bring her vast training experience to the Northern TTAP and to hike and explore the rich environment of northwest New Mexico. Maria Quintana comes to the Northern TTAP from Hondo, NM where she lived for 15 years. She is one of our Training Consultants for the Farmington-Gallup-Grants area and is based at the UNM Northern TTAP office in Farmington. She brings to the role a wealth of knowledge from her experiences as a preschool teacher, site director and mother of three grown children. She is eager to complete her Master s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the prestigious Erikson Institute in the spring. We are delighted to welcome her to the team and know she will be a great support to the teachers in her communities. 2

3 State Designed Trainings SUPPORTING THE FULL PARTICIPATION OF EACH CHILD This course is designed to provide early childhood educators with the insights, tools, and strategies to promote engagement in play, learning, and development for each young child. The course explores the dimensions along which children and families in NM are unique and underscores the difference that authentic, responsive early childhood experiences can make. The sequence of instruction emphasizes evidence-based practices for supporting children who are culturally and linguistically diverse and strategies for overcoming biases to build trusting and collaborative partnerships with families. BUILDING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH POWERFUL INTERACTIONS Powerful Interactions, the book written by A. Dombro, J. Jablon, & C. Stetson, provides the foundation for this 4-hour training about practical and influential ways to interact with young children. Join us as we explore a number of practical insights and strategies that can help to increase our effectiveness as educators of young children. INTENTIONAL TEACHING SERIES Orientation to Intentional Teaching: This 8-hour training gives an overview of the New Mexico Early Learning Guidelines (NM ELGS) and of the Authentic Observation, Documentation, and Curriculum Planning Process (AODCP). The Orientation series teaches the foundations of Intentional Teaching. Introduction to Intentional Teaching: This 8-hour training is offered to educators who have completed the Orientation to Intentional Teaching series, and to educators who have previous experience in the Authentic Observation, Documentation, and Curriculum Planning Process (AODCP). Introduction to Intentional Teaching builds on previous knowledge and experience with the New Mexico Early Learning Guidelines and with the Authentic Observation, Documentation, and Curriculum Planning Process cycle. Participants explore how the AODCP cycle leads to curriculum development in the intentional, early childhood setting. Intermediate Intentional Teaching: This 10-hour training is an in-depth study of the New Mexico Early Learning Guidelines Guiding Principles and of how these principles relate to family engagement, as well as to curriculum development in the early childhood setting. Reflection will be introduced, discussed, and practiced as a learning tool for the Intentional Teacher. Participants will engage in curriculum development activities and will be viewed through the participants reflective lens. Advanced Intentional Teaching: This 10-hour training explores intentional teaching as a way to promote life skills such as self-regulation and critical thinking. Participants engage in discussions and activities that help promote higher level cognitive and social-emotional skills in the early childhood setting. The knowledge and skills gained from the previous Intentional Teaching series are applied in the context of diversity, family, and the communities that form the world of educators and students. 3

4 The 18-Hour Conversations Course: This course is designed for registered family child care home providers. This training opportunity bridges a gap in our early childhood professional development system for family child care providers. The 45-Hour Entry Level Course: The 45-Hour Entry Level Course is a basic course created to introduce participants to New Mexico s seven (7) core competency areas at the awareness level. All child care providers working in licensed child care centers and family child care homes are required to complete this course, or its equivalent, with the first six months of employment. The Northern TTAP strongly recommends a 3 credit Early Childhood Course at an accredited institution in lieu of the 45 Hour Class for those interested in pursuing FOCUS or an early childhood degree. Local colleges and online courses are available. The course is free but there is a cost for your participant book. Quality Early Childhood Programs for All Course also known as The 6-Hour This course is designed as an introduction to special services and inclusion resources available to support early childhood professionals so that every child is included in early childhood programs. Ideas for building family partnerships and information about service providers will be highlighted. A review of related laws is also included in the course. All child care educators working in 3-STAR and 4- STAR licensed child care centers and family child care homes are required to complete this course, or its equivalent, with the first six months of employment. New Mexico Early Childhood Core Competency Areas: 1. Child Growth, Development & Learning 2. Health, Safety & Nutrition 3. Family & Community Collaboration 4. Developmentally Appropriate Content 5. Learning Environments & Curriculum Implementation 6. Assessment of Children & Evaluation of Programs 7.
