2 SUOnline ACTION PLAN (working document ) SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AND A&M COLLEGE STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR (ver ) (Goals and objectives approved by the Southern University System Board of Supervisors on January 8, 2010) Developed in the midst of an economic recession, this plan, collectively and judiciously implemented, is intended to enable Southern University and A&M College to recruit, retain and graduate highly competitive students in an effective and efficient manner. Area A: STUDENT ENROLLMENT AND RETENTION OBJECTIVE A-1.9: Increase the number of adults age 25 and older enrolled in postsecondary education programs by attracting or recruiting back adult students who earn postsecondary education credentials. *** A Enhance existing and create new academic programs and/or concentrations to attract an age 25 and older student population. A Each year faculty members who build courses for SUOnline will increase the number of courses offered by 40. A By 8/30/2011, increase the number of degree or certification programs offered from 0 UG and 1 Comply each year with 100% of the Louisiana Board of Regents and SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) distance education guidelines for quality distance learning programs. Each year faculty members will work towards increasing online degree programs offered by at least 1 new program. A The availability of online courses and degree programs will increase the number of students enrolled in courses delivered through electronic media from 1136 to 3,000 unique enrollments. A Build 70 general education courses that have been identified as appropriate for online delivery because no undergraduate program can be online without them being online. A By 11/30/2010, in addition to the 70 general education courses, faculty will increase the number of stand-alone online courses open for enrollment in the spring 2011 semester from 75 to 150. courses and programs aligned with program-level learning outcomes that are careerdriven. Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana (CALL), a joint initiative between the Louisiana Board of Regents and the Southern Regional Board (SREB) aimed at making it easier for Louisiana adults without a college degree to enroll at a Louisiana public college or university and earn a degree or other college credential. Increase the number of students annually completing undergraduate and graduate degrees offered online. 4 Area C: EFFICIENCY, EFFECTIVENESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY GOAL C-1. Enhance the accountability, efficiency and effectiveness of all administrative, financial an academic functions. OBJECTIVE C-1.1: Implement Banner, LiveText and Electronic Tracking System for Alumni platforms to create a unified digital campus by C Through SUOnline, supported by the SUBR elearning Unit, faculty will create increasingly sophisticated learning experiences that capitalize on the evolving power of broadband technologies, the Internet, and telecommunications that are entertaining and informative, as well as pedagogically sound. C Faculty members who build courses for SUOnline will increase the number of online courses offered through electronic media from 36 in FY (baseline) to 150 totally new stand-alone online courses. Encourage SUBR to use the Banner Integration for elearning component to integrate with a range of contemporary learning management systems. Use templates created in LiveText learning management system for online instructional materials and evaluative materials used in online courses and degree programs. Interface LiveText with Banner as well as Wimba, Live365, itunesu, YUDU media, ecubed Space, ecubed Learning Objects, and SUOnline digital products. 5 OBJECTIVE C-1.5: Annually review and evaluate all academic programs Baseline: Last University-wide annual report was published in 2007 C The elearning Unit (elu) will submit an annual report with evaluative data of the elu and all components of SUOnline.. The Office of Academic & Student Affairs will evaluate the elearning Unit, its staff, and SUOnline. Ongoing Office of Academic SUBR faculty elearning Unit Surveys Course evaluations SUOnline faculty developers and online course instructors will evaluate all training and support that they receive. Distance Pre-post test scores SUOnline courses and degree programs will be evaluated to determine if they are compliant with the SUOnline Course Assurances. The course completion rate, satisfaction rate, and graduation rate of students enrolled in courses and degree programs will be evaluated. SUOnline students will evaluate their experiences in and satisfaction with the technology, opportunities for peer interaction, courses, and instructors. SUOnline will be evaluated to determine if goals and objectives have been met. 6 Area D: ACADEMIC AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS GOAL D-2: Improve the academic environment Objective D-1.2: Review and update 100% of all curricula on an annual basis taking into account contemporary knowledge and best practices through Baseline: TBD D SUBR faculty members, supported by the elearning Unit and SUOnline, will work towards department-level curricular redesign that facilitates institutionalization of online education thereby producing quality online course and degree offerings. D Comply each year with 100% of the Louisiana Board of Regents and SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) distance education guidelines for quality distance learning programs. SUBR departments will redesign the programs of study for degree programs that are appropriate for online delivery. The courses in the redesigned degree programs will be based on the program s learning outcomes that might reduce the number of courses required to complete degrees. D Southern University will create a state-of-the-art elearning studio to house SUOnline. Create environments that foster routine use of technology in courses. Provide and utilize leadingedge technology and services for instruction that will enhance the effectiveness of learning and communication Create a diverse educational technology delivery system that increases the availability of quality online courses to University students both locally on campus and remotely across the nation and world. Use a content management system such as LiveText to build student-centered learning environments, online courses and degree programs, instructional materials, and evaluation materials. 8 Objective D-2.3: Require all academic units to host at least one major activity that provides opportunities for students to be exposed to and participate in best practices in the respective disciplines. Baseline: N/A D SUOnline will provide opportunities for students to participate in best practices in online education. Students enrolled in SUOnline will evaluate instructors according to SUBR criteria as well as considering the 10 best practices for teaching online. The SUOnline Teacher of the Year will be selected from those evaluations. Train and support faculty and staff to provide the information and resources to develop pedagogy necessary to be successful in virtual learning environments.
