It seemed as if I had not only made the six-hour difference of time zone but also made the change of season from Winter to Spring! My colleagues and I have therefore attended the three major Faculty Recruitment Fairs in London (twice) and Boston. We are very happy with the Fairs. In particular, we are always extremely pleased to hear from candidates, as well as the Fair organizers, the esteem in which AISB is held within the world of international education and the powerful reasons for why this is the case. These reasons include, amongst others: high reputation of the faculty and administration on the international circuit; the reputation of the city of Budapest as a sought-after place to live; the beautiful state-of-the-art campus; the strong sense of direction that the school has through its Strategic Plan. The number of candidates expressing a wish to be interviewed for a possible position at AISB was very high indeed at all the Fairs. Recruitment becomes our number-one priority at this time of the year. Our interview procedures are long and in-depth, and the whole process is very time-consuming for the administration. However, this is very necessary to ensure that we obtain the best possible fit between candidates and our school. We have not yet completed the filling of all vacancies. However, all new teachers we have contracted so far for the 2011/12 school year come to us with an outstanding track record. I shall be forwarding more information on our recruitments in due course. Student Numbers and Nationalities At this mid-way time of the year, after the December departures of a number of families and the arrival of new families in January, I wish to give you an update of our student numbers and nationality breakdown. Total number of students: 844 Early Childhood: 86 Elementary: 306 Middle: 202 High: Deadline for the next Wednesday Weekly is 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb 10
2 Nationalities total: 57 The top five from a percentage point of view are: USA 19%, Hungary 19%, South Korea 11%, China 7%, Netherlands 5% Best wishes, Ray Holliday-Bersegeay School Director Kedves Szülők, Az e heti üzenetben az alábbiakról szeretnék beszélni: Recruitment fairs, Diák létszám és Nemzetek. Összes diák: 844 Early Childhood: 86 Elementary: 306 Middle: 202 High: 250 Nemzetek: 57 Az 5 legngyobb látszámban képviselt nemzet : USA 19%, Magyarország 19%, Dél Korea 11%, Kína 7%, Hollandia 5% Üdvözettel, Ray Holliday-Bersegeay Iskolaigazgató 2 Deadline for the next Wednesday Weekly is 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb 10

4 From the Health offices: Also known as the "seasonal flu" or flu, influenza is a serious and contagious respiratory illness that's caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, sometimes leading to pneumonia, bronchitis, and ear infections. Some groups are at a higher risk than others, including the elderly, young children, and people with certain health conditions. What happens when I get the flu? If you're exposed to influenza, symptoms may appear out of the blue. Chills are often the first indication that you've got the flu, and fever of over 100 F or 38 C is very common. You may experience a sore throat, dry cough, and headaches, as well as an achy feeling in your legs and back. Sometimes, the flu leaves patients feeling so ill, weak, and tired that they remain in bed for days. The flu can lead to severe respiratory problems. These may include difficulty breathing and pneumonia. Be sure to check with your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. The "Stomach Flu" The stomach flu is not the same as influenza.. The Stomach Flu is caused by a virus or bacteria and primary symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. With influenza you may, in rare instances, experience vomiting as well. When is flu season? Winter is generally considered peak flu season, with most outbreaks occurring in January and February. But sometimes flu cases can peak as early as October-November or as late as April. Please keep your students home when they are sick. They should not come to school for 24 hours after they have a fever of 37.5 C or 99.6 or above or have vomiting or diarrhea. This is to insure that your student recovers and to avoid spreading their illness to others. Pleass inform the secretary of your child s division when your child is ill.

8 SENEGAL SERVICE PROJECT: SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND FUND DRIVE HS Global Issues Team Assisting a Senegal K-8 School in Senegal During the February break AISB juniors and Global Issues Team members Linn Ternsjö and Evelyn Cools will be traveling to Senegal on a service trip with students and teachers from the British International School of Budapest. In the following article, Linn and Evelyn encourage you to support their project through the HS Global Issues supplies and fund drive: While in Senegal we will be assisting with the ongoing construction of a school in the village of Warang, which is located roughly a two hour drive south of the capital Dakar. The Belgian NGO we ll be working with, Les Cajoutiers (link below), is in need of school lunches, teaching supplies and summer clothes/shoes for the students (age 4-13), so we would also like to bring these with us! The airline has generously given all of us an enormous extra baggage allowance to bring donations, and we are holding a drive to fill our allotment with as many items as possible. This includes pencils, pens, scissors, sharpeners, rulers, erasers, notebooks, books and magazines in French, and blouses, shorts, sandals, t-shirts, etc. Please bring contributions of used clothing and school supplies to the boxes labeled Senegal located behind the Building A and B reception desks this week and next. The HS Global Issues Team is also raising funds toward the purchase of solar panels and equipment to help the school generate its own electricity at no further cost, as well as to provide school lunches for as many Senegalese school children as possible. Last week the group raised 90,000 forints for school lunches by selling 450 pots of Jell-O to the middle and high schoolers in our popular Desserts for Deserts sale, a novel twist on the traditional fundraiser bake sale. At 1000 Huf per student per month, this covers 7 students lunches for the year! We are trying to raise a similar amount toward the solar panels purchase. If you would like to contribute any amount toward this amazing project, please bring your contributions to the café and tell them it s for Senegal. Contributions in any amount help and are gratefully welcomed! You can of course also choose to support one child s school lunches for a year by donating exactly12,000 forints! If you would like to consider sponsoring a child to go to school, and for more information, follow this link: Thanks! Linn Ternsjo and Evelyn Cools and the HS Global Issues Team Linn and Evelyn and two other HS Global Issues Team members (Hanna and Yingzi) at the popular Desserts for Deserts Jell-O fundraiser, which raised 90,000 Huf for the school in Senegal. 8 Deadline for the next Wednesday Weekly is 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb 10
