2 Energize Learning A Guide to Successful Teacher Websites 1. State Your Purpose Commit to your users with a communications plan stated clearly on your website. Address each audience students, parents and community members and tell them what you will be communicating and how often. 2. Content is Crucial The primary question: what does my visitor need to further achievement, get an answer, solve a problem? As an educational resource quality content, classroom procedures, project calendars, lists and forms make your site a meaningful bookmark. How to s and Helpful hints are successful tools. Share current articles through an article library or a link library. 3. Keep it Fresh Updates are vital to keeping your site important to your users. Keep your Home Page and key pages such as homework assignments current. Utilize Schoolwires Last Modified Date so that everyone knows that your site is current. 4. Make it Easy Well-Organized & Easy to Read Beware to viewers, a poorly organize site can be misconstrued as poorly taught courses. Technically, the most important information on any page should be above the fold (all information shown within a monitor s screen.) Consistent & Easy Navigation Your students and parents need to quickly find information. Schoolwires Auto Page list or Section Hierarchy list helps to build logical navigation. Selecting one of the different page types will provide consistent structure delivering for information. Users love to Click! Hate to Scroll! Keep em moving with a site that guides users through many short, thoughtfully-linked pages. 5. Leverage Free Resources Provide parents and students with a list of useful links to external sites. Your audience will learn to bookmark your site as a reference. A well thoughtout list of links adds value to your site. Profile: An Unsuccessful Website 1. Fails to state a clear purpose & set proper visitor expectations 2. Lacks good content, structure, legibility or visuals 3. Content is not written for the web 4. Isn t updated regularly 5. Tries to do too many things on one page 6. Doesn t have contact information 7. Isn t spell checked or proofread 8. Uses uncompressed graphics 9. Has broken links 6. Keep it Fast Photos allow for a connection that clip art cannot provide. A reasonable number of photographs keep a user s interest focused on your message. Keep the number of photographs to less than three to a page and optimize them for quick download times. 7. Be Interactive Inspirational sites encourage user participation through online quizzes, Webquests and more. Schoolwires Forms & Surveys module provides an easy way for teachers to add interactively and stimulate the learning process. 8. Keep it Professional The quality of your website reflects on you! Be sure to proofread, spell check and grammar check. Check for broken links. 9. Follow the Rules Your site is a model for others to follow. Know and follow your school s web publishing guidelines, copyright law and COPPA compliance. Use content only when you have proper permissions. 10. Ask for Help Use all resources available to you.
