3 INVOLVEMENT IN SPORT I m currently the President of SASCOC, South Africa s umbrella governing body of sport. I m also Vice-President of the Commonwealth Games Federation. My involvement in sport stretches back more than three decades, and began as a competitive athlete at school and college levels where I played rugby at various levels. After years of active participation in sport I moved on to the administration aspect. This involved: the forming and managing of clubs, the establishment of regional/provincial formations and participating in national structures that culminated in the forging of unity in South African sport DURING MY THREE DECADES OF SPORTING INVOLVEMENT, SOME OF THE OTHER AREAS I HAVE WORKED IN ARE President/General Secretary/Committee member at club/ provincial and national level; Amateur Swimming Association of Border Golden lions Rugby Union South African Rugby Union South African Rugby Union (Pty) Ltd National Sports Council South African Sports Commission Swimming South Africa National Lotteries Distribution Fund Vice-President of Commonwealth Games Federation IOC Commission Member of Sport and Environment ANOC Commission member of Marketing and New Finance Participation in the above led to extensive travel in various capacities, some examples of which are as follows: Swimming and Rugby World Cups: Swimming and Rugby (Manager), Commonwealth Games (Chef de Mission), Olympic Games (Manager), Tri-Nations rugby (Manager), International rugby tour (Manager)
4 ACADEMIC AND EDUCATION A trained teacher by profession I ve served in various academic positions and been a headmaster of various schools as well as lecturing at the Cape College of Education and the University of Fort Hare. I m also honoured to be the holder of the following degrees obtained at the University of Fort Hare: Bachelor of Arts (History and Languages} Bachelor of Education BA (Hons) (Language) I also have a BA (Hons) (Sports Management) degree from the University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU). OTHER ACADEMIC POSITIONS President: Teacher s Union Chairman: Principals Association Served on various higher education councils and school governing bodies such as: Rhodes University {East London), East London Technical College, Eastern Cape Technikon, University of Fort Hare and the Fort Hare Foundation During my academic career I ve also participated in and led many delegations to improve the quality of education in South Africa. Also, I have been intricately involved in the formation and management of non-governmental organisations in the fields of education, business, sport and social issues.
5 INVOLVEMENT IN BUSINESS Outside of sport my interest in business started with the Independent Business Enrichment Centre (IBEC), a pioneer in the promotion of small businesses through financial and non-financial support. My experience gained from chairing the Board of Directors of IBEC led to ventures in investments in many sectors and there followed directorships on various company boards.
