1 Optometric Technician Training Program Designed for Busy Adults Program Summary: As an Optometric Technician (Optical Assistant or Ophthalmic Technician) you will work under the supervision of a licensed eye care professional. Optometric Technicians assist in testing patients' vision, providing frame styling services, and instructing patients in contact lens handling. They administer vision therapy programs prescribed by the licensed eye care professional. The course combines 140-hours of classroom instruction (20 weeks) with an off-site 120-hour externship to provide students with a comprehensive learning experience. Course Fee: $ includes books, student tool kit, consumable supplies, externship, and course completion certificate. Certification: Graduates receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. Financial Assistance: Students with a need for financial assistance may inquire about SLM Financial for a loan, the application process is easy! Contact Boston Reed at for more information. Job Survey: The market for this profession is excellent. Starting pay is from $12 16 per hour for graduates. Schedule: Designed for busy adults classes are held on weekends. Externships coordinated by Boston Reed College. Pre-requisites: Minimum 18 years of age and high school completion or its equivalent. Students need competency in, or completion of a basic computer operations course. Students will be required to have access to the Internet, printing capabilities and an address. A math and English pre-assessment test will be administered on the first class meeting to assure student success. Prior to placement in an externship, students will need to show proof of completion of CPR for the Healthcare Provider course, a health examination including TB testing and submission of a resume. 2 Optometric Technician (Optical Technician) COURSE OUTLINE A-22 Title: Health, Science, and Medical Technology - Support Services A-22 Number: Approvals: Board of Education / / CSDE / / Goals and Purpose: This program was designed to provide, thorough didactic and practical instruction, training to prepare participants to work as Optometric Technicians, Optical Assistants or Ophthalmic Technicians under the supervision of licensed eye care professionals. Didactic lectures cover the theory, anatomy and terminology pertaining to the eye. Practical instruction provides hands-on training in the listed procedures verified through a skills check-off system. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. Graduates can take the optional Certified Paraoptometric Examination (CPO) offered by the American Optometric Association (AOA). Performance Objectives / Participants Outcomes: Participants will receive comprehensive instruction in assisting in the optical field. The course combines theory and practical instruction over 20 weeks. Competency will be measured by written and practical examinations. Practical material will be presented and graded in a competency-based fashion under the direction and supervision of a qualified instructor. At the end of the course the participant will be able to: Objectives 1. Identify structures of eye. 2. Describe the physiological mechanisms of the eye. 3. Contrast the differences between Ophthalmology, Optometry and Opticianry. 4. Perform mathematical calculations common in the optical field. 5. Describe the theory of light. 6. Read and interpret an optical prescription. 7. Adjust eyeglass frame to meet the need of the client. 8. Complete eyeglass frame repairs. 9. Demonstrate the use of optical devices. 10. Demonstrate use of lensometer to determine prescriptions of existing lenses. 11. Complete a lifestyle analysis with a client. 12. Demonstrate selling techniques for multiple pairs of glasses and lens add-ons. 13. Demonstrate lens neutralization. 14. Demonstrate skill in career and educational goal-setting, organization, note-taking, and test-taking. 15. Complete externship requirements including physical exam, TB test, CPR, basic computer proficiency. 16. Use communication strategies associated with quality customer service. 17. Draft a resume that clearly communicates one s value to an employer. 18. Contrast effective communication approaches for dealing with people of various personal styles/temperament. 19. Use active listening, mirroring and parameter-setting to participate effectively in difficult conversations (criticism, bad news, etc.) 20. Describe and apply several strategies for managing stress on the job, at school, at home.
