Student Success Validation Through Dual Enrollment and Early College Models St. Clair County Community College Pennsylvania Highlands Community College
St. Clair County Community College Founded in 1923 Approximately 3,800 students County is focused on creating a college-going culture Hard hit by recession
Why an Early and Middle College Program? Co-effort to create a college-going culture Michigan Governor initiative to have all high school students graduate with some college credit Savings for students Requests from local districts
The Board s Role and Support Board questions and concerns What is an early college? Why do one out-of-district first? Board focus and support Growth of student population Providing service to a school district and students
The Early College Cros-Lex (CL5 ) How we started Issues from the outset
Barriers to Higher Education for Cros-Lex Area Students 9% of adults in the area have a bachelor degree Low socio-economic levels for families in the area Distance the nearest college is 40 minutes away
The Basics Sophomores commit to the program in February and they take a rigorous curriculum combining Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC), AP and college classes They return for a 5 th year at Cros-Lex High They are college-bound but not specifically those going to 4-year programs They must achieve minimum benchmarks, including GPA, have good standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and provide a writing sample They must be fully willing to commit to an extra (5 th ) year at Cros-Lex High by signing a letter of intent Students are still able to participate in high school sports and extracurricular activities
The First Class and What We Learned Community reaction Excited about student opportunities Supportive of new program Desire to continue program Appreciated the opportunities provided to students in their own school Board reaction Pleased with initial program Interested in a similar program county-wide in St. Clair County
Pros Do not have to travel far from home Communication between high school and SC4 Jump start/ Higher education earlier Close-knit group bond Good staff/student ratios Structure Helps pay for further education
Cons CL5 Administration-to-student communication needed to expand to explain how to complete the program and still continue to be involved in high school events Extra year of high school Student-maturity level More difficult classes and work load Schedules Bus getting back to school on time How to buy books and library access were limited in first class due to distance
CL5 Results and Feedback 60% of the students were on the President s Honor Roll The cohorts at CL5 became small sub cultures of the larger high school setting. The students made their own t-shirts and hung out together. They were proud to be in the early college and wore their academic success as a status symbol. Being smart and hard working was their niche. I watched a board member tear up when the first class of 36 students walked across the stage at commencement. 70% of those students were firstgeneration college attendees. Mission accomplished!
Expansion The Middle College Regional Educational Service Agency Charter School Blue Water Middle College The first cohort started with 89 students In 2015, there are 601 total students in the program
Data Results Blue Water Middle College 1 st cohort (56 students) graduated in (59%) have earned an Assoc. Degree 2 nd cohort (131 students) 68 (52%) have earned an Assoc. Degree 47% of all students earned an Assoc. Degree within one year of traditional high school graduation 54% of all students earned an Assoc. Degree within two years of traditional high school graduation In St. Clair County, approx. 33% of students earn a degree or certificate within 6 years of high school graduation
Data Results Blue Water Middle College Since the beginning of the program ( ): Approximately 29,100 credit hours Approximately 30,900 contact hours Success rate (C or better): Middle College student: 85% Average of all SC4 students: 76%
A Typical Schedule
Growth of High School Students on Our Campus Dual enrollment as a percent of total fall enrollment 26% 22% 18% 15% 11% 8% 8% ,012 09FA 10FA 11FA 12FA 13FA 14FA 15FA
The Faculty Response Issues concerning student maturity Concerned we were becoming a high school Overall resistance to program faded as they got to know student abilities
The Board s Reaction Very supportive of the early and middle college Realization of the financial impact of the program Desire to expand to other schools not currently in the program
