2 Welcome! What is Women s Own Day Withdrawal Services (DWMS)? DWMS is a 28 day program that supports women who want help with stopping their alcohol or other drug addictions. If you are a woman over 16 years old, we can help you if you: need support to manage your withdrawal from alcohol or drugs have stopped taking alcohol or drugs but still have some withdrawal symptoms are in a crisis directly related to alcohol or drugs are having trouble with friends and family because of your addiction want to learn more about how addictions affect your mental and physical health are alone and would like the support of other women: if you can t enter into a Residential Withdrawal Management Centre while you are waiting for your treatment date want a better quality of life and are ready to make changes We can provide you with help in your own community. Our services are confidential (private) and there is no waiting list. Who would I meet at DWMS? Our DWMS team is made up of women who are trained professionals. They work with the staff at the Residential Withdrawal Management Centre and Community Program to help women overcome their addictions. Our team will work with you in a respectful, non-judgmental and caring way. We are sensitive to women s issues and issues of race, class, culture and sexual orientation. 2

3 How will the team at DWMS help? Our team can provide many different kinds of help. We can: put together a plan to help with your most serious withdrawal issues or other related problems watch your progress to see if there are any problems with your physical, medical or mental health give you information about what happens during your withdrawal This will help you know what to expect and avoid relapsing (using alcohol and drugs again). provide acupuncture Acupuncture can help with withdrawal symptoms like cravings, trouble sleeping, or anxiety (feeling worried or irritated). provide you with personal counselling offer support groups for learning life skills and other helpful skills refer you to other counselling, treatment or other community resources provide case management services if needed provide telephone support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Where can I find DWMS? We provide our services at the Adelaide Resource Centre for Women. We are open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. You don t need to be admitted to the residential service in order to use DWMS. Please register with us before you start. 3

4 How do I register with DWMS? You can call us to register, or you may be referred by: your family or friends your doctor or hospital your co-workers the police, government or other social agencies (offices) To register with DWMS, call (you can leave a message) or Central Access at You can call the Central Access number 24 hours a day. After you call: 1. A DWMS worker will speak to you or call you. They will ask you some questions to make sure that DWMS can help you. 2. You will get an appointment for your first meeting. At this meeting, we assess you to find out what kind of help you need. 3. We will then give you information and other resources to help plan care that is specially designed for you. If you are in a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. 4
