I m a student and I live in a flat in London with three friends. I travel to my university every day on the underground. I have lessons every morning, and in the afternoon I usually study in the library. I work hard, but I also have a lot of fun with my friends. We don t have a lot of money, so we often listen to music at home. We sometimes go to concerts too. My best friend is in a band. He sings and plays the electric guitar. The guys in the band don t play pop music. They play really good rock music and sound a bit like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 9 Zadanie otwarte b 2 a 11 1 We usually have lunch in the office, but today we are going to a cafe. 2 Are the boys doing their homework at the moment? 3 I am not having breakfast today because I m late for work. 4 My sister isn t working today. 2 1.03 Zapis nagrania Good afternoon, sir. Can I help you? Yes, please. I d like to book your club for a twenty first birthday party, on Saturday July the eighth. I d like to invite 16 boys and girls. Fine. Would you like any decorations? I d like some balloons and flowers. I m afraid that fresh flowers will be rather expensive. Why? It s July and there are lots of flowers. I ll bring some from my garden. Ok. Do you have any preferences for the food? Yes. Some of the guests are vegetarian so the menu should include lots of salads and fruit. And one hot dish, I think. Ok and what about music? I d like a live band to play. Sorry, but we can only have a DJ. That s fine but before the party I d like to talk to him about the kind of music he s going to play. Most of my friends are of rockand-roll fans. I ll give you his phone number. That will be fantastic. Thank you. 4 1 I d like to book your club for a twenty first birthday party. 2 I m afraid that fresh flowers will be rather expensive 3 Do you have any preferences for the food? 4 And what about music? 5 That s fine! 6 That will be fantastic! It s fine, Elaina. It s a really easy journey and I ve done it so many times. I don t have a problem, anyway. So will you see all your family at Thanksgiving? Sure. Thanksgiving is a family event in the US. We always have a big meal together and eat turkey and pumpkin pie. Hmm. I always find those family parties a bit difficult. I usually argue with my brother. I don t have any problems like that with my sisters, so it s OK. It s only one day, anyway. After that, I go and see my friends. Do you think you ll go back to the US when you finish your course here? Well, I d like to go travelling for a bit. I haven t seen enough of Europe, but then I ll probably go home and get a job. Actually, I m thinking of getting a part-time job here. I d like to work at weekends and maybe on Friday evenings... maybe in a restaurant. Well don t come and work at my place. I m thinking of leaving. I m just too busy to do my college work. What you need is a holiday! Why don t you come to America with me and meet my family? Er... No, I don t think so. ROZUMIENIE ZE SŁUCHU 2 She twisted her ankle Zapis nagrania I went skiing for the first time a few years ago with some friends. I had a couple of lessons on a dry ski slope before I went, but I wasn t that confident when we booked our holiday. We went to a lovely ski resort in France called Samoens. The resort had difficult slopes for experienced skiers and a lower area for beginners, so it was perfect for us. The village was great. It had lovely historic buildings and some interesting monuments, but there was all kinds of entertainment too with shops, bars, restaurants, an open air market, and even an outdoor ice rink. We stayed in a comfortable chalet which had great views of the mountains, and we ate in fantastic restaurants every evening. Anyway, everything was going really well until we decided to visit the ice rink. I discovered that I wasn t quite as good at ice skating as I was at skiing. I was skating onto the rink for the first time when I fell awkwardly and twisted my ankle. That was the end of my skiing on that holiday! 3 B 4 1 B 2 A 3 B 4 B 5 C 1.11 Zapis nagrania I made my first skydiving jump last year and I ll never forget it. Let me tell you what it was like. I was always mad about sport at school and was in all the school teams. Generally, I like to be fit and healthy, but I became interested in extreme sports a few years ago. Now, people ask me why I like doing dangerous sport. For me, it s the idea of doing something that s new and difficult and really exciting. Anyway, I tried white water rafting and rock Oxford University Press 2011 Nowa matura ustna Oxford Repetytorium Matura Podstawowa 5

6 climbing. Then I decided to do something in the sky. I thought about having flying lessons, but then I found a website about skydiving. One of my friends is an experienced skydiver so I asked him what it was like. To be honest, I m a bit scared of heights, but he said it was the best thing in the world, so I decided to try it. I found a good skydiving school and booked a course. We had an early start on the first day. Lessons began at eight o clock and we spent the first six hours learning about skydiving equipment and what to expect. I m not very keen on studying and you might think it was boring, but it wasn t at all, and all the time I was thinking about doing my first jump at the end of the day. I was really looking forward to it. Then came the exciting part. We put on our sky diving clothes our overalls, our helmets, our gloves and our goggles, and then we got on the plane. When it was time for me to jump, the instructor told me to walk towards the exit door. I wasn t frightened at all, but my equipment and my clothes weighed so much I had to walk very slowly. I felt the cold air through the exit door and then... I jumped. I fell faster and faster and the wind roared in my ears. Then, I opened the parachute and could see the world far, far below me as I floated slowly down to earth. Those were the most fantastic moments of my life and of the jump. My landing wasn t the most comfortable landing in the world, but I picked up my parachute and walked towards the skydiving building. It was a sunny day and I was smiling. 5 1 about 2 in 3 of 4 on 6 1 of 2 about 3 with 4 with PLUS s. 2 WYPOWIEDŹ PISEMNA 2 Type of event: tournament, game, match, competition, race Prize: trophy, cup, medal People: players, contestant, spectators, competitor 4 1 A postcard. 2 A sporting event. 3 An English friend. 5 Hi Lizzie How are you? 9 1.17 Zapis nagrania Have you ever thought about living on a houseboat? The fact is, more and more people are taking this decision. In Britain alone, it s thought that there are around 15,000 people living on boats. So why are people taking this decision? One reason is that it s cheaper. Buying a houseboat is a lot cheaper than buying an ordinary house. Another reason is that people want to get away from busy, modern life to find a more relaxing lifestyle. But is it a comfortable way to live? I visited Ben, 24, a computer analyst, and Lizzie, 23, a newly qualified teacher, on their houseboat in Essex in the south of England to find out what life is like on board. When I first got on Ben and Lizzie s houseboat, it felt quite small to me, but as I wandered around, it didn t seem much smaller than my own one-bedroom flat. There s a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. I also came across a small storage room and plenty of cupboards. The couple also have electricity, running water, a phone and broadband internet, so working from home and keeping in contact with people isn t a problem. So what are the best things about living on a houseboat? Ben and Lizzie told me that they loved most things about their unusual lifestyle, but that they particularly like the people. They say they get on with everybody in the community and that there s always a party or a barbecue happening on one of the boats. But are there any problems? DIY, the couple told me. You can t get away with not doing repairs to your home. The problem is, when you re living on water, your house is constantly moving around so things are always cracking and breaking which means there are always repairs that need to be done. The wind and rain doesn t help this, either. However, it s still cheaper than looking after an ordinary home, and don t forget it s more environmentally friendly, too! I finally got off Ben and Lizzie s houseboat and wandered back through the marina. The sun was shining, people were friendly and there was a really nice atmosphere. I felt quite envious of their unusual lifestyle. Have you ever wondered where they shop? I took a trip to Beverley Hills to find out. Beverly Hills is a small town for the very rich. Its streets are full of multi-million dollar mansions with expensive cars like limousines and Mercedes parked outside. There are shops and boutiques, top class restaurants and hotels, parks and churches, but there aren t any hospitals, and there are certainly no cemeteries. This is a place for the rich to live in comfort, to shop and eat and to forget about the real world. When I arrived in Beverley Hills, the first thing I wanted to see was the shops! 15 place to go shopping? There is a place called The Golden Triangle in Beverley Hills, which is a network of streets filled with shops and restaurants. The most famous of these streets is probably Rodeo Drive. The stretch of shops and boutiques on Rodeo Drive is only three blocks long but it s probably the most expensive three blocks of shops in the world. Here, the most famous clothing designers in the world have boutiques including Armani, Gucci and Coco Chanel. Here you can shop in jewellery stores with names like Cartier and Tiffany. In fact, Rodeo Drive is home to the single most expensive store in the world: Bijan. This place is so exclusive you have to make an appointment in advance just to go inside. On a typical visit, Bijan s average customer spends around $100,000. The tourists flock to this part of Beverley Hills to go window-shopping and to try to see stars like Britney Spears and Christiano Ronaldo. I spent the day doing what the tourists do, but it was the evening that I enjoyed most. During the day the place can look at bit ordinary, but at night, it s lit up with sparkling lights the shop windows look fantastic. If you are planning a trip to Beverley Hills, a word of advice avoid arriving on a Sunday. Most of the shops on Rodeo Drive are closed then, and the usual crowd of shoppers is replaced by too many tourists with nothing to look at! We went to some fantastic places all over the country. For most of the holiday, nothing really bad happened. We didn t lose our passports; we didn t miss our trains or buses; we didn t stay in any horrible places and the weather was absolutely fantastic, too. Then we arrived in Sydney and went to Bondi beach. It was our last stop before going home. We were staying in a youth hostel there and decided not to leave anything in the hostel just in case there were any thieves around. We were going home in two days time and didn t want anything to go wrong. So, I put everything into a small black rucksack and took it down with me to the beach. We lay on the beach all day and swam in the sea. One of us always stayed with our things to look after them. So... in the afternoon when I opened my bag to get my book out, I couldn t believe it. The bag was empty. Everything was gone: my tickets, my passport, my money, my digital camera. Everything! I couldn t understand when somebody had done this because we were always watching our bags. Then one of my friends, Joe, admitted that he had fallen asleep when he was on his own with the bags. I wanted to be at home on Christmas day. My train was supposed to leave at two p.m. The trouble was, the weather was absolutely terrible. There was a snowstorm and all the trains were running late. Of course, the twenty fourth is the busiest travel time of the year in the US so there were hundreds of people at the station and they were all in the waiting rooms trying to keep warm. At five p.m, we heard an announcement that all the trains leaving the station that day were cancelled. It was freezing at the station, but I didn t see any point in leaving. I wouldn t be able to get on a bus or even in a taxi, and I wasn t keen on going anywhere on foot in that bad weather.
