1 Current Online Courses LSVT GLOBAL announces the launch of a new ONLINE educational course series: LSVT Global is expanding its ONLINE continuing education opportunities! In addition to our LSVT LOUD Training and Certification Workshop we have launched a new series of additional educational modules. There are courses for the public as well as courses reserved for LSVT Certified Clinicians only. Faculty for these courses are international experts and researchers in the range of areas related to speech and swallowing disorders. After you register for the course you will have 90 days to complete the course at your convenience and you can start and stop the course as needed (your information will be saved where you stop so that you can continue with the last slide you viewed). The course is viewed through your internet browser so you will just need an internet connection and speakers to connect to the course. After registration you will receive an with details on how to login to your account and access the course. You can begin the course at any time after you register. Courses are open to speech-language clinicians, allied health professionals, physicians, or members of the Parkinson community. Select courses are reserved for LSVT LOUD Certified clinicians only. 3 Parkinson Disease and Swallowing This course reviews swallowing physiology and sensorimotor control mechanisms. The impact of Parkinson disease (PD) on swallowing is described. The course discusses when to evaluate, how to assess and when and how to intervene for PD-related swallowing disorders. A preference for exercise based treatments is discussed, including a discussion of LSVT LOUD and Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST). The use of other techniques such as compensatory strategies and diet modifications are also discussed. In addition, the course discusses the potential for swallowing neuroplasticity and future research trends. Objectives: Upon conclusion of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Review swallowing physiology and sensorimotor control mechanisms 2. Describe the impact of Parkinson disease (PD) on swallowing 3. Know when to evaluate, how to assess and when to intervene for PD-related swallowing disorders 4. Discuss the potential for swallowing neuroplasticity and future research trends Michelle R. Ciucci, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Dr. Ciucci is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders, Department of Surgery Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and a faculty member of the Neuroscience Training Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Her area of research interest is sensorimotor control of voice and swallowing, with an emphasis on Parkinson disease. David H. McFarland, Ph.D., SLP Dr. McFarland received a doctorate from Purdue University and did postdoctoral training in neurophysiology at the Université de Montreal. He is currently Professor in the Faculté de Médecine of the Université de Montréal and Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University. His areas of research interests include normal and disordered speech and swallowing motor control, and conversational interaction. Speech and Deep Brain Stimulation: Treatment Options This course will discuss three areas of the speech-dbs literature, including: 1) A brief overview of basal ganglia anatomy and physiology and a brief description of DBS as a treatment for Parkinson disease (PD); a summary of the history of electrical stimulation and deep brain structures; a description of the variable effects of bilateral versus unilateral STN-DBS and Globus Pallidus Internus (GPi-DBS) on speech of patients with PD; a discussion of the methodological issues to consider when studying speech and DBS; 2) The various clinical and surgical factors that can affect speech as well as predictive factors on speech response; and 3) Treatment options. Objectives: Upon conclusion of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Introduce the literature on the effects of electrical stimulation of deep brain structures on speech in patients with Parkinson s Disease and dystonia. 2. Discuss clinical (age, disease duration, medication levels, motor scores and speech intelligibility) and surgical factors (electrical parameters and contact location) that can have an impact on speech post DBS. 3. Present treatment options based on behavioral/ biofeedback programs and/or adjustment of electrical parameters, both within a multidisciplinary team. Elina Tripoliti, Ph.D. Dr. Elina Tripoliti is an employee of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH, NHS Trust, Unit of Functional Neurosurgery. The Unit is supported by the Sainsbury Monument Trust and Parkinson's Appeal for Deep Brain Stimulation. In addition, part of the research in this presentation was funded by Parkinson's UK and UCLH Foundation NHS Trust.
4 LSVT eloud This course is open to LSVT LOUD Certified Clinicians and trains you in telepractice as an LSVT eloud Certified Clinician. LSVT eloud is an on-line (e.g., webcam) treatment method where patients can receive therapy from remote locations, including the comfort of their own homes. You can deliver treatment from your home or office. Lorraine Olson Ramig, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Dr. Ramig received her doctoral degree at Purdue University and master s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in communication disorders. Dr. Ramig is a Professor in the Department of Speech-Language and Hearing Science at the University of Colorado-Boulder, a Senior Scientist at the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS), a division of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), located in Denver, Colorado, and an adjunct professor at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and Columbia Teacher s College in New York City. Dr. Ramig is an internationally recognized scientist with an established research record in the areas of aged and neurological voice disorders. She has been investigating neurological voice disorders for over 20 years and has authored numerous refereed journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Fox received her degree from the University of Arizona and is currently a research associate at the National Center for Voice and Speech (Denver). She assisted in developing efficacious treatment for Parkinson disease and is considered among the world s experts in administration of LSVT, including application to pediatric populations. LSVT LOUD Certification Renewal This course is open to LSVT LOUD Certified Clinicians. The course includes the following updates: Explain advances in neural science and the impact on rehabilitation Describe paradigm shifts underlying the rationale and delivery of LSVT LOUD: target, mode, calibration Explain new imaging data and ongoing research/data related to LSVT LOUD Discuss rationale, data, and tools for technology-enhanced delivery of LSVT LOUD The course is approximately 90 minutes in duration. 5 Each course is offered for 0.1 CEUs (Advanced level; Professional area) Important information regarding the ASHA registry: Your course completion will be reported to ASHA if you indicate at the time of registration that you would like us to report this and you supply us with your ASHA number. ASHA requires us to report online course completion according to a set schedule which occurs in 3 month intervals. Thus, depending upon when you complete the course, it can take up to 3 months for your course to be reported, then it takes ASHA additional time to register the information once they receive it.
