1 GSD 6328 In Search of Design through Engineers Hanif Kara and Andreas Georgoulias Spring 2014 DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE Lecture, 4 credits INSTRUCTORS Hanif Kara Pierce Anderson Lecturer in Creative Engineering Department of Architecture Office hours: by appointment hanif.kara@akt-uk.com Andreas Georgoulias Lecturer in Architecture Office hours: Mondays 1:00-3:00 ageorgou@gsd.harvard.edu CLASS MEETINGS Mondays 10:00AM 1:00 PM, Room 109, Gund Hall COURSE DESCRIPTION (REGISTER) This course aims to teach, stimulate and demonstrate "design led" opportunities that exist in the zone between Architecture and Engineering, through the paradigm of Design Engineering. Positioned within the space of interdisciplinary boundaries, the course invites both GSD and MIT students to encourage and pioneer a joint, interdisciplinary discourse. Eight high profile projects, won as design competitions and subsequently constructed, act as the platform to expand the thinking on: o Pioneering technical solutions; o Establishing a variety of aesthetic positions; and o Exploring transformational research in both design methodologies and technological developments. The course structure covers a broad spectrum of architectural approaches that allow students to respond to each unique derivative position, from concept to construction. Through substantial and unpublished original material, students will engage with the early conceptual stages through to the detailed design process and construction. Page 1 of 7

2 Case studies will be studied in pairs, with each module lasting 4-5 sessions. Through fast design exercises, analysis, interaction and team work, students will become part of the project team in the most critical design decisions. Student team projects will be assigned for each module and present their analyses in class. During the course, several project architect(s) from the cases will participate in the discussion. A final paper/ project will conclude the course. CASE STUDIES Ravensbourne college (FOA), 2010 Shanghai Expo UK Pavilion (Heatherwick), Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre (Zaha Hadid) Turner Contemporary Museum (David Chipperfield Architects); MSU Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (Zaha Hadid) 240 Blackfriars London (Allford Hall Monaghan Morris) plus introduction to White Collar Factory Phaeno Centre (Zaha Hadid) Various UK 2012 Olympics projects. COURSE SCHEDULE The course will meet in accordance with the academic calendar, once per week during the semester. Hanif Kara will be physically present in class during at least one session of each case study. The rest he will participate through video teleconferencing. Each case study pair will be carried out for 2 sessions. In these sessions, the instructors will introduce the case(s) and the initial scheme of the architect, Project Architects for each project will also attend in each case either in Boston or by video conference. In the fourth session students, in small groups, will present their proposals critique and alternatives for the project, based on the material handed by the clients, from the design, engineering and construction point of view. Students will use design diagrams and sketches, precedents, qualitative analysis and analytical tools, as needed. Each group composition will differ for assignments and final project, sometimes mixing skills, putting architecture and engineering concentration students together. Groups will be formed in discussions early in the semester. Feedback from the project s participants will be as valuable Page 2 of 7

3 as the process of identifying issues in the design and proposing solutions when some building variables are not rigidly defined, and some others have to be kept without compromises. The course structure will bring the students as close as they can get to the original premises of the case study method, the presentation of a piece of reality and the expansion of one s experience base. Together with the provision of substantial quantities of original and unpublished material, the students will get the exposure of working together with the project team for some of the most challenging buildings of contemporary architecture. Being put in the middle of the process, the students will not be passive receivers of information, but rather will get a firsthand experience of the design issues when architects and engineers come together. All the skills developed in the duration of the course will be put together in a final project. Student team and will have to produce design proposals for a small project on a given brief, that will be handed in by the instructors early on in the semester. The final project designs will be presented in class during the last session and the final submissions will be due on May 12, INSTRUCTORS Professor Hanif Kara ( is a structural engineer and co-founder and director of Adams Kara Taylor, the design-led structural and civil engineering consultancy. As design director, he has worked on award-winning projects throughout Europe. His projects have included Peckham Library (UK), the National Trust headquarters (Heelis) in Swindon (UK), which won 17 design awards, and the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg (Germany). Professor Kara is a long-standing visiting lecturer at the Architectural Association (external examiner ), Cornell University and was appointed as Professor of Architectural Technology at Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan (KTH), Stockholm from He was selected for the Master Jury for the 2004 cycle of the Aga Khan Awards for Architecture. Professor Kara is the first structural engineer to be appointed a Commissioner at CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) where he co-chaired the design review panel, chaired the Inclusive Design Group, and was one of the 15 members of the Design for London Advisory Group of CABE s London Design Review. He is a fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, and Honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and fellow of the Royal society of Arts. Page 3 of 7

4 Prof. Kara will be on campus 6 to 8 times, and for the remaining sessions will join the class synchronously via videoconferencing. He will be available for questions immediately after each class and by appointment over videoconference when he is in London, during which anyone is encouraged to discuss the course or other matters of interest. Dr. Andreas Georgoulias is a lecturer in architecture and a founding member of the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His research focuses on large-scale sustainable developments and infrastructures. Dr. Georgoulias is a registered architect in the EU and apart from his design and development practice in Athens, he has collaborated with Arsis Architects and Obermeyer Planen+Beraten GmbH. As a site engineer he worked with Hochtief in the New Athens International Airport, the largest construction project in Europe at the time. To expand his understanding of the complexities of mega-projects, he worked in the Transportation & Public-Private Partnerships group of UniCredit. Dr. Georgoulias has collaborated as independent consultant with several private firms and governmental agencies such as the General Services Administration of the US Federal Government at their Public Building Services program. Recently, he has been a consultant for new city developments in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and he conducts research on sustainability integration for the Gulf Encyclopedia of Sustainable Urbanism, sponsored by the Qatar Foundation. He is co-editor and contributor at Infrastructure Sustainability and Design, published by Routledge, and at Interdisciplinary Design (with Hanif Kara), published by Actar. Dr. Georgoulias holds a 5-year professional degree in Architecture Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, a Master in Design Studies and a Doctor of Design from Harvard GSD. 5 WEB SITE The web site is This is the main tool for the course. We will use the web site for all our communications, discussions, submittals, reviews, etc. Paper documents will be rarely used. ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is required. Class participation counts towards the final grade. TEXTBOOK There is no required textbook for the course. ASSIGNMENTS There is one quick team assignment where students will present the results of their analysis inclass, an individual paper, and a final project. Please refer to the course schedule for assignment dates. MID-TERM PAPER AND EXAMS There will be no mid-term exam but a final project will summarize the student s exposure to and understanding of the material and issues discussed in the class. Students will be provided with the project brief and site at the start of the semester and will present their design solutions at the last session of the class. The final project is due on May 12, GRADING The final grade is based upon the instructor's estimate of the student's comprehension of the material, at the end of the course. Group presentations are weighed 25%, individual paper 15% class participation 15%, and final project 45% of the grade. PLEASE NOTE: All distributed original project material is confidential and should be used for this course only and be destroyed after the class is over. Page 5 of 7
