2 [NEXT: A NEW RENAISSANCE] The year was The place a living room in someone s brownstone in the epicenter of the hotbed that was Harlem. Jean Toomer was there reading from his future masterpiece. Max and Abbey were there loving each other and creating this thing called jazz. Zora Neale was there, changing the way we talked about each other. Here, in the comfort of a living room, a new identity, centered on art, culture and community was being re-birthed. Here, in the comfort of a living room, a growing group of artists, movers, shakers and thinkers, came together and changed the world. Almost a hundred years later, in the roiling hotbed that is Atlanta, a new movement is taking shape. A new generation of artists and thinkers are creating and connecting in spaces all across this burgeoning city. Not comfortable to simply create art for the sake of art, they are pushing boundaries, inventing new art forms and asking the question, so what next? NEXT is a celebration of these artists. [NEXT - MORE THAN JUST AN EVENT] AYODELE HEATH SLAM POET NEXT is the brainchild of a group of Atlanta artists and activists who seek to launch a movement that galvanizes members of the city s creative class into a potent force for change. In partnership with the National Black Arts Festival, NEXT is host to quarterly salons and a documentary series showcasing the hottest and brightest stars of the city. 1. [NEXT: THE SALON - YOUR FRONT ROW SEAT TO THE NEXT BIG THING] NEXT: The salon is a series of quarterly genre-blending performances showcasing the hottest and brightest stars in the visual, literary, spoken word and musical arts those right on the cusp of stardom. But NEXT is more than art for art s sake. This interactive event aims to use creative expression to find solutions to society s most intractable challenges and encourages collaboration between artists and audience to elevate us all to our NEXT level. Performances are staged at a different culturally relevant space each quarter. [NEXT: THE DOCUMENTARY ONE CITY. FOUR DREAMS] NEXT: The Documentary follows the rising stars of four amazing Atlanta artists on the brink of stardom against the backdrop of a city on the verge of a renaissance. The series captures the talents, struggles and triumphs of the four artists visual, musical, spoken word and literary -- first showcased at the NEXT salon event. Filmed by The Horne Brothers in collaboration with Mustard Seed Communications and Creative Intelligence, NEXT: The Documentary tells a different artist s story each week as part of a webisode series launched on YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. The series is also disseminated widely through each artist s network and via the distribution mechanisms of NEXT and the National Black Arts Festival.
