4 Fundamental and advanced topics in Transportation Modelling and Traffic Network Operation and Management This 3-day workshop will provide: 1) An overview on transportation modelling and traffic network management and operation. It further introduces the state of the art developments in the area of transportation modelling, travel and household survey technologies, as well as importance of land use variations 2) Presenting the newest advancement in large network traffic management and operations Workshop Objective The workshop is aimed at providing: An overview on transportation planning, travel demand and network modelling A rich overview of the latest research in emerging methods of urban transportation modelling such as tour and activity based modelling and freight/city logistic modelling A basic understanding of data needs of current and emerging transport models An overview on traffic engineering, and traffic management with a network overview A rich overview of the latest research in emerging methods of traffic engineering modelling such as safety, freight and road price modelling State-of-the-art in on-time network management Who Should Attend? The first two days of the workshop is dedicated to Transport Demand Modelling and Planning and the last day is dedicated to Advanced topics in Traffic Engineering Management and Operations. This workshop is suitable for transport industry professionals including engineers, planners, researchers, and state and regional government planning and traffic management agencies. Those interested in transportation planning and modelling, strategic modelling, freight modelling, application of advanced technologies to travel surveys, and network traffic management and principals will benefit from the specialist topic discussions during this workshop. The topics discussed cover both fundamental and advanced topics. 5 About the Speakers Korous Mohammadian is Professor of Transportation Systems in the Department of Civil and Materials Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research over the past several years has covered various areas of transportation planning including travel behavior analysis, modelling of activity and travel patterns, travel survey, and development of state-of-the-art travel demand models for implementation in practice. He has published extensively in the field and his work has appeared in several international journals. He is the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Transportation Letters and has served as guest editor of the Journal of Transportation. He has served in several committees of the US National Academy of Science -Transportation Research Board (TRB) including Transportation Demand Forecasting, Traveler Behavior and Values, Telecommunications and Travel Behavior, Travel Survey Methods, Statistical Methodology in Transportation Research, and the Taskforce on Moving activity-based approach to practice. He has received the 2008 Fred Burggraf and 2007 Charley Wootan awards from the Transportation Research Board recognizing his contributions and excellence in transportation research. Stephen Greaves is an Associate Professor in Transport Management, having joined ITLS-Sydney in He has extensive teaching experience in a wide variety of transportation-related courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as industry-based short courses. Currently, he coordinates TPTM6470 [Sustainable Transport & Logistics Systems] and TPTM6180 [Geographic Information Systems] in the postgraduate MTM program and is program director of the Advanced Certificate in Traffic and Transport Management (ACTTM). Stephen 's current research interests are focused on the use of new technologies to enhance the collection of travel survey data, environmental impacts of freight transport, and exploring behavioural responses to different road-user charging mechanisms. He currently holds two ARC grants, advises four PhD students and continues to publish extensively in a wide-range of mediums. Stephen also provides transport consulting services to government and industry and regularly provides media commentary on contemporary transport policy issues in Sydney. Majid Sarvi is the director of Institute of Transport Studies and the Head of Transport Group at Monash University. He has received 3 degrees in civil engineering. He has served on several international committees, the ADB30 Network Modelling Committee, AHB45 traffic flow theory committee, and Emergency Evacuation Task Force of TRB. He has over 15 years of professional, academic and research experience in the areas of large multimodal transport network modelling, vulnerability and optimisation, crowd dynamic modelling, and traffic flow theory of congested networks. He is the author/co-author of over 185 refereed publications. He serves on the editorial board of several journals including Transportation research part C, Journal of Advanced transportation and Transportmetrica-B. He has undertaken consulting on many major international projects since receiving his bachelor degree. This includes Transport Master plan for the city of Dubai, the freight Master plan for city of Abu Dhabi, and transport planning of Dubai Metro Green line. Serge Hoogendoorn is professor in Traffic Management at Delft University of Technology. His research and teaching activities include coordinated traffic control and management, active traffic and demand management, traffic flow theory and simulation. He is a core member and one of the founders of the NEARCTIS Network of Excellence in Cooperative Traffic Management. He is the chair of the Netherlands Network Management foundation, a member of the Traffic Quest Centre of Expertise on Traffic Management, and he is the founder of the ITS Edulab. He has worked on many national and international projects in the field of traffic operations and management. Recent work includes the development and testing of a shockwave suppression algorithm Specialist and the Field Operational Test Integrated Network Management Amsterdam where he is involved in developing the logic and algorithms for both the freeway and the urban controllers (field test will be performed late 2013). Both projects are performed on behalf of the Dutch Road Authority Rijkswaterstaat. Serge Hoogendoorn was appointed full professor in Traffic Management at Delft University of Technology in In 2006, he was appointed the prestigious Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professorship in Traffic Flow Theory and Simulation. His responsibilities include supervision of MSc and PhD students, acquiring research grants, setting-up educational programs and courses, giving and supervising different MSc courses in the field of traffic control, traffic management, and traffic flow theory, etc. Serge Hoogendoorn has an MSc in control engineering (1995, with distinction) and a PhD in civil engineering from Delft University of Technology.

6 Raymond Hoogendoorn is an Associate Professor in Delft University of Technology. His research focus is on the analyses and mathematical modeling of behavioral adaptations to Intelligent Transport Systems (driver support and travel information systems). Important aspects to be addressed are attitude, motivation, workload, activation level and driving performance as well as the impacts of the resulting driving and travel related actions and choices on individual and collective driving and travelling patterns. Eil Kwon is currently a professor of Transportation Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA. He has received his MS and Ph.D. degrees in transportation engineering from the University of Minnesota. He has over 25 years of research and development experience in various transportation areas, which include adaptive ramp metering/signal control, variable speed limit control, bottleneck capacity estimation and evacuation flow modeling. In particular, his ramp metering and variable speed limit control algorithms are currently being implemented at the metro freeway network in Minnesota. Prior to joining UMD, he had worked for the Minnesota State Department of Transportation as the Traffic Research Director for 4 years. William Lam, is the Chair Professor of Civil and Transportation Engineering and Head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University ( Prof. Lam is currently the President of the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies ( and the Chairman of the Logistics and Transportation Discipline Panel, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers ( He is the Co- Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Transportation and the Editor-in-Chief of the SCI Journal Transportmetrica A. Prof. Lam is also a member of the International Advisory Committee of the International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory (ISTTT). He has over 30-year professional experience in research and practice for planning of transport infrastructures. Prof. Lam has published more than 200 SCI international journal and conference papers together with 60 consultancy reports. His research interests include: transport network modeling and infrastructure planning, travel demand forecasts and risk assessment, ITS technology and planning, public transport and pedestrian studies. Alex Torday is civil engineer and obtained his master degree in 1999 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology where he where he also completed his PhD thesis on dynamic route guidance assessment and probe vehicles techniques in As part of his past research activities, he developed strong links with Tokyo University where he spent 4 months as invited researcher in From 2005, he leads the TSS Group consultancy activities worldwide. Since 2012 he also leads the Asia-Pacific branch of TSS, based in Sydney. Among his different implications at international level, he is heading the Spanish delegation for the ISO TC204 (ITS) standardization committee. Russell Thompson has over 15 years of experience in freight modelling that includes contributing to the development of the Freight Movement Model for the Department of Infrastructure in Victoria. He has been involved in a number of local and international studies relating to urban freight, including the Smart Delivery Project for the City of Melbourne and the OECD study on urban distribution. Russell is a founding Director and the Vice President of the Institute for City Logistics based in Kyoto and a Team Leader of the recently established VOLVO Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Urban Freight Systems. Michiel Bliemer is a Professor in Transport and Logistics Network Modelling at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney Business School in Australia. Prior to his position in Sydney, Michiel was Associate Professor in Transport Modelling at the Civil Engineering department of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and worked as a consultant and researcher at Goudappel Coffeng BV and TNO in the Netherlands. Since obtaining his MSc degree (with honours) in Econometrics and his PhD degree on the research of dynamic traffic assignment with multiple user classes, Michiel has published over 200 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, and conference proceedings on various topics. His main methodological research areas include static and dynamic traffic assignment, discrete choice methods, and experimental design, while his applied research areas include travel behaviour, road pricing and rewarding, evacuation planning, traffic management, and travel time reliability. Michiel is an active member of the Network Modelling Committee and the Survey Methods Committee at the Transportation Research Board (USA), the Innovative Methods Committee at ETC (Europe), and the scientific board of the DTA conference. Furthermore, he is a member of the International Association of Travel Behaviour Research, an Associate Editor of the Journal of Choice Modelling, and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Transportation Research Part B. In his work in academia and consultancy, he has brought science and practice together and developed several operational models for traffic assignment, such as INDY, Streamline, and STAQ (all implemented in the commercial OmniTRANS software), has developed the commercial Ngene software for generating experimental designs for stated choice studies, and has advised governments of several countries in the forecasting of travel demand and traffic conditions, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Australia.
