1 STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY 2015 CAMPUS STATEMENT The College of Optometry, located at 33 West 42nd Street in mid-manhattan, was founded as a State College within the SUNY system in 1971, to educate doctors of optometry (O.D. degree) to meet the future eye care needs of the people of New York State. The College moved into its current campus in Authority was granted in 1978, for awarding the M.S. and Ph.D. in vision science. Since it s founding, the College has become a national and international resource in professional and graduate education, general and specialty patient care, and vision science research. Students apply to the College because of the caliber of instruction, the excellent clinical and research facilities, and the size and diversity of the patient population. The College s total number of professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (M.S. and Ph. D.) students for the fall of 2015 is 385. There will be 37 Residents in advanced clinical competency programs with 15 located at the College and 22 at sites external to the College. About 21% of the students come from locations outside New York State. The total learning environment at the College offers students a comprehensive education, resulting in more than 95% of students consistently passing Optometry s national written licensing exam the first time they take it. The College of Optometry is housed in a single, 18-story building in mid-manhattan. The building is fully utilized by the College s education, patient care and research programs, and, in addition, houses the SUNY Center for Student Recruitment and the SUNY Information Center. The College s capital project plans focus substantially on critical maintenance, that is, building preservation, code compliance, and health and safety. A major project nearing completion is the replacement of the building s electrical switchgear and upgrade of its electrical feeders and emergency power generation capacity. Upgrading of the building s mechanical systems will begin in Based on the availability of funding this work will be limited to replacing mechanical units on the building s roof and on certain high priority floors. A critical project, completed last year, was the renovation of the College s two lecture halls on the ground level. This project has importance not only for the modernization of these lecture halls in terms of functionality and learning technology but also because seating capacity was increased from the 75 to 100, thus enabling the College to meet its approved enrollment growth targets. The renovation will allow the two rooms to be used either separately or opened into one large room. This year the College s third lecture hall will undergo an equipment upgrade that will make its audit/visual/lighting capability equal to the ground-floor rooms. Renovation of the building s ground floor is now underway This project will architecturally modernize the College s main entrance and lobby, enhance security, prepare space suitable for use as an art gallery, increase the floor s rest room capacity and make various mechanical system improvements. Its completion is expected in Additional projects that are in planning stages and depend on funding to proceed are conversion of the lower lobby for relocated student teaching labs and upgrades and improvements to the College s patient care floors. Also anticipated is the repair and refurbishment of the building s fire-rated stairwells. Finally, the College benefits greatly through the use of its Minor Critical Maintenance (MCM) funding. Many small but high impact projects are made possible through the careful use of MCM funding.
