2 ACD: Automatic Call Distribution is a system used to determine how incoming calls are routed. When the ACD system receives an incoming call it follows user-defined specifications as to how to handle the call. ATA: An Analogue Telephone Adapter is used to connect a standard telephone to a high-speed modem to facilitate VoIP and/or calls over the Internet. Audio Conferencing: Audio teleconferencing is an audio communications session that connects three or more participants at different locations to a call. Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the volume of data that can be transmitted over a communication line in a fixed amount of time. It is expressed in bits per second (bps) or bytes per second for digital devices and in cycles per second, or Hertz (Hz) for analog devices. Broadband: Broadband is a descriptive term for evolving digital technology that provides customers a single switch facility offering with integrated access to voice, high-speed data service, video demand services and interactive delivery services. BSS / OSS: Business Support Systems / Operations Support Systems are computer network systems used by telecom providers to support processes such as monitoring / provisioning, order entry, bill processing, network configuration and broadband and voice management. CALEA: Established in 1994, the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act requires telecommunications services to provide wiretapping access. Call Hunting: A calling feature for inbound calls that will roll past a busy signal or try multiple numbers until the call is answered. Cloud Computing: Cloud computing is the use of computing resources, such as hardware and software, to deliver hosted services over the Internet. The cloud entrusts remote services with users data and software. Codec: When relating to telecom, a codec is used to encode voice for transmission access IP networks. Codecs generally provide a compression capability to save network bandwidth. 1

3 CLEC: A Competitive Local Exchange Carrier is a telephone company that competes with the larger incumbent carriers (ILECs) through reselling the ILEC s services and/or creating services that use the ILEC s infrastructure. Conference Bridge: A conference bridge connects multiple parties over the phone. A proctor or moderator can man conference bridges, or they can be unsupervised. DID: Direct Inward Dialing numbers are telephone numbers, typically assigned in blocks, and connected to a PBX by PRIs or SIP Trunks. The PBX system identifies the number dialed by the caller and automatically routes to the appropriate extension within the organization. DNIS: Dialed Number Identification Service is a telephone function that determines which telephone number was dialed by a customer and then properly routes the caller. DTMF: Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency is used for telephone signaling over the line in the voice frequency band to the call switching center. The version of DTMF used for telephone tone dialing is knows as the trademarked term Touch-Tone. E911: Enhanced 911 routes 911 calls from phones to the geographically correct emergency station by service address. Find Me: Find me is a feature that allows calls to find users wherever they are, ringing multiple phones (such as a cell phone and work phone) all at once or one after another. FoIP: Fax over Internet Protocol is the fax counterpart of VoIP that transmits faxes via the Internet rather than the traditional method of sending faxes via the telephone line. IP: Internet Protocol defines the way data packets should be moved between the destination and the source. It is the primary protocol that establishes the Internet. ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network is the international standard for switched, digital dial-up telephone service for voice and data. 2

4 Jitter: Jitter is a momentary fluctuation in the transmission signal caused by a data packet arriving before or after a standard clock cycle. In telecommunication, it may result from an abrupt variation in signal characteristics, such as the interval between successive pulses. KBPS: The measurement kilobits per second is used to indicate data transfer speed. If the modem speed, for instance, is 1 KBPS, the modem can route data at the speed of one thousand bits per second. Lag: Lag is the term used to indicate the extra time taken by a packet of data to travel from the source computer to the destination computer and back again. The lag may be caused by poor networking or by inefficient or excessive processing. Latency: Latency is the time that elapses between the initiation of a request for data and the start of the actual data transfer. This delay may be in nanoseconds but it is still used to judge the efficiency of networks. LNP: Local Number Portability refers to the ability to transfer either an existing fixed-line or mobile telephone number assigned by a local exchange carrier and reassign it to another carrier. PBX: Private Branch Exchange operates as a connection between a private organization and the PSTN. The system connects the outside telephone network to the internal telephones, fax machines and extensions within the business. POTS: Plain Old Telephone Service is a standard telephone line. PSTN: A Public Switched Telephone Network is the combination of local, long-distance and international carriers that make up the worldwide telephone network. PRI: Primary Rate Interface is a type of ISDN connection that digitally delivers local, long distance, DID and Internet service over one 4-wire interface. QoS: Quality of Service is the ability of a network to give guaranteed performance based on some metric usually by prioritizing traffic. For example, certain types of network traffic such as Voice over IP can be prioritized to ensure a set minimum level of quality is alway obtained. 3

5 Real Time: A communication wherein any perceptible delay between the sender and receiver are minimal and tolerated. Regular telephone calls are real time. Point-to-point fax transmissions are close to real time. Voice messaging is in non-real time. SaaS: Software as a Service is a software delivery method that provides access to software and its functions remotely as a web-based service. SaaS allows organizations to access business functionality like hardware and software from a remote host. SIP: Session Initiation Protocol is the protocol for VoIP and other text and multimedia sessions like instant messaging, video, online games and other services. SIP is very much like HTTP, the web protocol. SIP Trunking: SIP trunking is a the use of Voice over IP to facilitate the connection of a private branch exchange (PBX) to the Internet. Softphone: Softphone is a software application that enables users to make and receive Voice over IP phone calls from a computer rather than a dedicated handset. A softphone is designed to mimic the functions of a real telephone. Virtual Number: A virtual number is a phone number without an associated phone line. Numbers can be set to forward to other VoIP lines. Virtual numbers create the appearance of a local presence for remote employees and offices. Voice Messaging (Voic ): An application of store and forward wherein telephone access to private messages are retrieved by users for playback. VoIP: Voice over Internet Protocol is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network. VoIP protocols carry telephony signals as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques.
