It has built up one of Europe's major libraries in this field and plays a significant national and international role in the areas of legal research, academic co-ordination, and the development of academic and professional links. The successful candidate will manage a small team of disability support staff and a portfolio of internal and external activities, including the implementation of the College Disability Equality Scheme, advisory and training services for staff, a specialist dyslexia and study skills support service, a part-time disability consultancy service for the Royal Veterinary College, and the co-ordination of the Disability Advisers Network across the Schools and Central Departments of the College. 5 UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis EPSRC Doctoral Training Account (DTA) PhD Studentship: Urban and Regional Modelling Applications are invited for a three year full-time EPSRC-funded PhD Studentship to work on mathematical models of city systems, with a particular focus on applications in London, with Professor Sir Alan Wilson FRS FBA. The studentship is available with fees and stipend for suitably qualified UK graduates. Closing date: 31st January 2008 UCL Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering Experienced Researcher 3D IMAGING AND MODELLING AT UCL 3D anatomical functional models for the human musculoskeletal system. An appointment as an Experienced Researcher (ER) is available at University College London, UK, within the framework of the European Marie-Curie Research and Training Network entitled "3D Anatomical Human". Description: The goal of this research is to develop effective images and modelling methods so as to better represent and interact with anatomic and in particular functional models of the musculoskeletal system at different levels of details. The acquired data will be primarily MRI and additionally Ultrasound. For this purpose, the successful candidate will assist in developing a framework to allow the individual examination of musculoskeletal systems in motion, merging several types of data (acquired and simulated) from the different partners. The medical relevance of the visualization/interaction techniques towards training and virtual examination will be assessed. The successful candidate will spend time for knowledge transfer at some other sites of the European partners of this network. In addition to his/her research within UCL, he/she will have to supervise the research and to collaborate to the coordination of the network. Requirements: Applicants will have a PhD in either biomedical sciences, computer science or any directly relevant discipline. Strong programming skills (C++, Matlab) and mathematical knowledge (differential geometry, Finite Element Methods) are needed for the project. A good knowledge of MRI and the ability to test and develop pulse sequences suitable for bone and cartilage is required. Anatomical and physiological background is also required and training will be provided if needed. Previous knowledge of MRI, image processing and modelling is mandatory. 6 UCL Institute of Child Health Portex Anaesthesia Research Assistant We are seeking a qualified, enthusiastic and reliable Research Assistant with good communication skills, and who enjoys working with infants and young children, to join our dynamic research team at the Institute of Child Health (ICH), under the direction of Professor Janet Stocks. The post is based in the Portex Anaesthesia, Intensive Therapy and Respiratory Unit. The successful candidate will assist in respiratory function measurements in infants participating in clinical and research projects investigating lung growth and development in infancy and early childhood. You will be responsible for the day-today running of the lung function lab as well as assisting in other infant clinical studies and associated research activities. The post holder will be employed by UCL in the Immunobiology Unit at the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), however the post is based at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in North London. The broad aim of the research programme is to understand how the homeostasis of T cells of the immune system is regulated by signals from both cytokine and antigen receptors. To address this issue we are taking advantage of a system biology approach integrating immunology, mathematics and statistics. The successful applicant will employ established laboratory based experimental methods to investigate mechanisms of peripheral T-Lymphocyte homeostasis and differentiation. The post holder will work closely with a mathematics/statistics Research Associate on this project. The mathematician will be based in Bordeaux and will apply statistical modelling to the experimental data generated by the post holder. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject. The aim of the project is to examine the fundamental electronic and magnetic properties of nanoscale structures, primarily using the imaging and spectroscopic capabilities of the LCN's suite of specialized low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopes. Topics of interest include atomic-scale magnetism and low-dimensional electron systems. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to work in the LCN's highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. The position requires a PhD in a relevant area of physics, chemistry, engineering or materials science. 8 UCL Institute of Child Health Nutrition Unit Research Associate The MRC-Childhood Nutrition Research Centre (CNRC) conducts research on the impact of early nutrition on the health and development of infants and children in order to underpin and foster the development of both clinical and public health practice, and training in paediatric nutrition. Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to work as part of a research team within the cardiovascular health group, working with healthy volunteers. The postholder under the supervision of the Dr Atul Singhal (Principal Investigator) will be involved in the initiation, day to day running, data analysis and writing up of several research studies. The appointee will undertake training in the application of vascular ultrasound techniques for assessment of cardiovascular disease risk factors and collect these and other measurements as part of protocol requirements. Dr Chakraverty is a Clinician Scientist who has recently been recruited from Harvard Medical School, USA, and is now establishing his own group in the UK. The transplantation unit at UCL is one of the major European centres for bone marrow transplantation. The major focus of our research group is to determine how antigen-presenting cells influence the induction of immunity to cancers (see Chakraverty and Sykes, Blood :9-17 for a review). We have established a new Transplantation Immunology Group at UCL, that forms a core component of a large immunotherapy programme at this site (Chakraverty/Bennett/Peggs/Morris/Mackinnon/Stauss). Extensive laboratory space is available as part of a recent HEFCE-funded refurbishment of the facilities. This includes three fully equipped tissue culture rooms, extensive bench space and access to excellent core facilities. 10 UCL Institute of Orthopaedics Research Assistant National Centre for Neurospinal Research Applications are invited for the post of Research Assistant to work at the Neurourology & Spinal Research Centre (RNOH, Stanmore) under the supervision of Prof. Michael Craggs (IOMS) Prof. Nick Donaldson (Medical Physics and Bioengineering), and Dr Andreas Demosthenous (Electrical Engineering). The post-holder will cover a broad spectrum extending from discussion with experts and assessment of current evidence, to experiment design, ethical approval, sourcing funding, recruiting patients, undertaking experiments, refining procedures, analysing data, assessing outcomes, presenting data for peer evaluation and posing new hypotheses to test. In addition you will be involved with delivering results to validate funding requirements. This post will interest those with a clinical and/or academic interest in spinal cord injury, or clinicians with an interest in rehabilitation, neurosurgery, or urology.
