1 GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: TELECOMMUNICATIONS-SECURITY MAINTENECE DEPARTMENT AUXILARY SERVICES DIVISION GENERAL STATEMENT OF WORK Under occasional supervision, performs specialized work in the area of complex telephone (PBX) equipment and maintenance of various types of telecommunications and security systems. Work involves using specialized testing devices, laptop interfaces, and maintenance documentation to determine various types of malfunctions, repairing telecommunications and security equipment, assembling devices, and installing highly sophisticated digital components. Work requires lifting and moving telecommunications and security equipment. Employee may perform in designated telephone and security repair area or independently at various school sites. Employees report to the Electrical Foreman. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs highly sophisticated DOS computer based telephone (PBX) switch programming, diagnostics, and maintenance through the use of computer terminals and laptop notebook computer equipment, which uses Ethernet IP addresses on the GCS network. Understands the complexity of the software language for the Nortel Meridian I Option 11C switch, Lucent Merlin switch, TIE telephone switch, and Vodavi Telephone switch. Knowledgeable with telephone D-marks, cross-connecting, T-1 circuits, the ability to use a but-set for dial tone detection, all EIA/TIA based color coding for various types of telecommunications cabling, termination equipment, and testing devices of various types. Must be able to repair and maintain Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) and public address systems within the school and support facilities. Acceptable knowledge of Windows based Operating Systems, (98, 98SE, 2000, XP) and is able to use this knowledge to obtain information in order to increase job efficiency, interface with several Windows based systems, and to interface with the GCS network. Determines cause of error and applies corrective action to restore the telecommunications equipment and security systems to its optimum operating performance. Reviews repair requests, determines extent of needed service and exercises considerable judgment in continuing corrective service or forwarding recommendations for replacement of telecommunications, telephony, and security system components. 2 Assembles telephone, telecommunications, and security equipment according to the schematic diagrams and written instructions as required. Installs, maintains, and repairs components of telecommunications, telephone, and security systems. Assists with the requisition and inventory of parts and materials Lifts, carries, and moves telephone, telecommunications, and security equipment as required. Request, maintains and is responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts and equipment assigned and is issued for use. Inventory all tools and equipment quarterly and submit results via the appropriate supervisor(s) to the Director for consideration. Have considerable knowledge of the operational capabilities of the District s computerized work order system and is able to provide assistance as needed to subordinates working in the trade. Must have considerable knowledge of all department operating procedures to include but not limited to the work order procedures, credit card procedures, International Standard Organization (ISO) procedures, and other departmental procedures developed and implemented. Responsible for the ensuring assigned automotive equipment is operated and maintained as outlined in applicable district s procedures. LANGUAGE ABILITY: requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, technical manuals, trade journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare GCS REV. 2/2006 2

3 ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Perform other related work as required. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma obtained from graduation or GED supplemented by either/both a two-year associates degree in computer science or other closely related field or at least two years of experience in computer based programs, and/or security systems, and/or telephone switches (PBX) which requires appropriate skill, knowledge, and comprehension. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of telecommunications equipment and tools including diagnostic and testing equipment, hand tools and power tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force to move objects. Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, lifts, and/or in tight places. Physical demand requirements are for moderately heavy work. DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to assistants or subordinates. system documentation, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence. GCS REV. 2/2006 3

4 INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagrammatical form, and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. VERBAL APPTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English, and electrical, computer, telephone, security, and mechanical terminology. NUMERICAL APPTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract, multiply, and divide, and to determine decimals and percentages. FORM/SPATIAL: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using hand tools and electronic testing equipment. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as electronic testing equipment and hand tools. Must have minimum levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors. INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving and giving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and dealing with people acting under stress. PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) 6 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE Considerable knowledge of design; assembly; and operation of a wide range of Telephone, Telecommunications, and Security systems. Ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams and maintenance documentation. Ability to systematically determine the source of problem in t e l e p h o n e, telecommunications, and security systems and to take appropriate action. General knowledge of Telecommunications Principles. General knowledge of diagnostic tools and utilities. General use of operation and use of standard test equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. High service oriented and with good follow-through and personal time management.
