5 3 Justification for Reactivation of the Master of Applied Psychology College of Social Sciences and Communication University of Arkansas at Little Rock Need: Currently, there is no graduate program offering degrees in the area of Industrial-Organizational Psychology in the state of Arkansas. The closest approximation is a Ph.D. in Management at University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. This program is a doctoral program in Management out of the Walton School of Business. The Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology (SIOP) reports that 100% of the UARK program graduates go on to academic positions in colleges and schools of business around the country. In addition to a lack of I-O Psychology preparation, there is no graduate Health Psychology program within the state. What we offer is an applied program where we prepare practitioner-scholars who, upon graduation would go into public and private sectors of industry within the state or go on to pursue doctoral education in related areas (See Appendix A. Tables 1 and 2 Analysis of I-O Programs by Neighboring State Institutions, Aspirational Institutions, and CUMU Institutions). Industry Needs: I-O Psychologists contribute to an organization s success by improving the performance, satisfaction, safety, health, and well-being of its employees through hiring practices, assessment, targeted training programs, organizational development, and management systems (SIOP, 2014). Recent industry trends in the United States workforce reveal the following: Chronic lack of competencies in STEM and communication fields; Aging workforce resulting in a loss of organizational experience and expertise; Increasing competition for specialized talent; Striving for innovation and technology; Increasing need to streamline the production line while maintaining a healthy organization. As a result of these industry trends, initiatives such as talent development and management, recruitment and retention of skilled personnel, workplace education and training, and long-range organizational planning have emerged as essential for organizations to thrive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Industrial-Organizational Psychologists have a median income of $80,330. The projected job growth in this industry from is 53% which the Bureau described as much faster than average (U.S. Department of Labor, 2013). Based on these projections, Time Magazine special issue, Mastering Your Money: How to Thrive in Today s Economy listed I-O Psychology as one of the fastest growing jobs to watch over the next 10 years (Editorial, May 2014). Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. Fastest growing occupations. Occupational Outlook Handbook, Edition. Retrieved from (last updated January, 2014). Editorial: Where the jobs are (2014). [Special Issue] Time Magazine: Mastering Your Money, p. 36. Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP), (2014). 6 4 Interest: In Spring 2014, a survey was administered to all UALR Psychology majors (current) and alumni who received a Bachelor s degree in Psychology from UALR. We received 85 completed surveys from current students and 165 completed surveys from alumni. The alumni were asked if, after receiving their Bachelor s degree if they went on to seek a graduate education. Over 40% indicated that they completed a graduate program either in Psychology or a closely related field. Another 13% said they were currently enrolled in a graduate program. Finally, almost 19% of the respondents said that they plan to pursue graduate education in the future. The current students were asked to rate their level of interest in pursuing graduate education. Over 85% of the respondents said that they were either Very Interested (62.34%) or Somewhat Interested (23.38%) to go on to graduate education. When asked to rate their interest in pursuing a graduate education at UALR, over 75% indicated that they were either Very Interested (50.00%) or Somewhat Interested (25.71%). These responses suggest that there is a demand among current students and alumni sufficient to successfully revive the program. (See Appendix B Current Student and Alumni Survey Summary) Potential for Interdisciplinary Collaborations Upon the reactivation of the Master of Applied Psychology program, the UALR Psychology department and the College of Business will propose an interdisciplinary 18-hour Graduate Certificate program. This GC would be designed as a professional development opportunity for Human Resource professionals for whom a Master s degree is not necessary or desired. Such a completion degree would provide these professionals with necessary advanced credit to meet new certification requirements. (See Appendix C Letter of Interest and Commitment for Interdisciplinary Collaboration)

19 9/10/2014 UALR Mail - Joint GC with COB Amanda Nolen <alnolen@ualr.edu> Joint GC with COB Sonya Fontenot Premeaux <sfpremeaux@ualr.edu> To: Amanda Nolen <alnolen@ualr.edu> Fri, Sep 5, 2014 at 11:46 AM Amanda, Thanks for meeting with me this morning. I am very excited about the possibility of a joint graduate certificate in human resource management/i O psychology. I routinely get inquiries about our MBA program from students interested in human resources and from those who do not want to pursue an MBA but do want to take some HR courses. We offer several graduate-level HR courses, but not enough to offer an 18-hour graduate certificate. Our current graduate certificate in management does allow students to concentrate in HR, but it is not eligible for financial aid because it is only 12 hours. This creates a financial hurdle for many. I envison a joint 18-hour graduate certificate which requires students to take management and psychology courses. With the courses that both programs already have on the books, we can create a quality program that allows students options to take electives in management and/or psychology. My experience with the HR managers in the area indicates to me that many would welcome an opportunity to complete a graudate program that is eligible for financial aid but that is not a full degree program. I will get started with my ideas for the curriculum and look forward to seeing what you come up with. Sonya Sonya F.
