2 A History of Leading the Field Winston-Salem State University has a heritage of breaking new ground. As the only four-year university in the nation and the only Historically Black College or University to offer a degree in Motorsports Management, WSSU is complementing NASCAR s Drive to Diversity program to include more minorities and women in the higher levels of motorsports. As the motorsports industry grows worldwide, WSSU is ready to respond. With its long tradition of working with regional and national companies and organizations, it is uniquely positioned to compete, succeed and lead in the 21st century. Fueling the need. Whether it is stock cars, open wheel, drag racing, off-road, or other forms of racing, motorsports as a whole is the fastest growing sport in the world. With all of the opportunities generated by this kind of growth, the need for Motorsports Management professionals is greater than ever. How fast is the industry growing? Motorsports is one of the largest spectator sports in the world - of the 20 highest attended sporting events in the U.S., 17 were motorsports events. Motorsports generates billions of dollars in revenue each year. In recent years, cable TV has helped grow motorsports by 1000%. Economic research indicated that in North Carolina alone, there are 25,000 motorsports-related jobs that average an approximate annual salary of $60,000.

Motorsports is serious business requiring special knowledge and real-world learning experience experience you can acquire through the Motorsports Management program at Winston- Salem State University. A QUICK LOOK INSIDE THE PROGRAM. The Motorsports Management program at WSSU is an experiential degree program housed in the School of Education and Human Performance, with cooperation from the School of Business and Economics. This multidisciplinary approach includes courses from both schools in order to provide the broad academic foundation needed to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and expanding field. The WSSU Motorsports Management program has two areas of concentration: Motorsports Operations and Motorsports Marketing & Event Planning. This unique bachelors degree program goes beyond the garage to the front offices of the teams, tracks, sponsors, suppliers and variety of companies that fuel the sport. Through partnerships with motorsports industry leaders, WSSU offers the hands-on experience in the business to enhance your development and put you on the leading edge. 5 The curriculum includes a required internship where opportunities are plentiful for students through various industry partnerships and corporate relationships. 6 GETTING STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup event in Las Vegas, NV: Students worked with event and track management. NHRA Event at Z-Max Dragway in Concord, NC: Students worked with the NHRA sanctioning body. NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Martinsville, VA: Students worked with pre-race event management and media center support staff. NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup Races in Dallas, TX: Students worked with event and track management staff. NASCAR Kinetics: Marketing in Motion program Students competed with other universities where students evaluate various marketing case studies and provide potential solutions back to NASCAR management. IZOD IndyCar Series in Toronto, Canada: Students worked with IndyCar officials in developing and executing a marketing research project. IZOD IndyCar Series in Chicago, IL: Students worked with marketing and event management personnel at Chicagoland Speedway. Gerry Cavis, NASCAR MISSION The Motorsports Management (MSM) program prepares students to assume leadership roles in the rapidly expanding, consumer-driven motorsports industry. The MSM program provides an environment for students of diverse backgrounds to receive an education in an industry that has a significant economic impact in North Carolina and the nation. The WSSU Motorsports Management Program has been recognized by NASCAR s Office of Diversity Affairs, receiving its 2009 Educational Organization Recognition Award for efforts to include more minorities and women in the higher levels of motorsports.
