Summary of Feedback Results Number of faculty who participated in the Digital Learning Summer Institute = 20
Workshop Topics by Facilitators
Feedback Results from Faculty Participants June 3 rd 2014 Workshop: Developing Video-Based Instructional Materials using Echo 360 Personal Capture: Conducted by Adrianna Dattoli I.T. & Jaya Kannan Digital Learning
What 3 concepts/skills did you learn from the workshop that will be most useful for applying to your teaching/professional experience: Learned new tools Gain understanding of what is SHU Understanding the scope of various tools I did not perceive this as a learning opportunity of the technological skills because the presenters went too fast for that. However, I did learn about programs that I could use. I didn't develop skills, but rather I learned about new tools I can use in my course. 1. Diigo 2. Office Mix 3. Echo 360 Didn't really learn skills but did learn many tools that would be valuable use in future classes. I think it would be helpful to actually have skills labs for each.
Faculty Participants reported the following digital applications as useful in applying to their teaching/professional experience: Introduction to Office Mix Embed videos, quiz using Office Mix Power Point w/ voice over Jing I learned to use echo 360 imovie as an alternative video program Varies types of video capturing Varies ways to make clips Using classroom capture Implementing visual and digital aids Having students use videos for oral presentations Poll Everywhere Video Annotation Using digital technology to enhance close reading Exposure, Options - Tech Strength & Weakness
Developing Video-Based Instructional Materials using Echo 360 Personal Capture: Specifically, how would you apply the concepts/skills you learned in this workshop? I plan to add voice to my PowerPoint downloaded to BB Using for end of semester review PPT. Having students use imovie for end of semester project Lecture, Lab (Land based augment) + online courses Office Mix - to enhance my powerpoints Diigo - shows possibilities for discussion of documents PLN - Possibly Enhance PowerPoint Presentations Echo powerpoint would be helpful for creating online supplements for exploring courses, poll everywhere I would incorporate in on-ground courses. Snow Days: -Tutorials for students to review course concepts -Build department database of concepts imovie as an alternative video software Polling to be used for pre-post assessment Make clips to be embedded to lecture explaining the most important topic This space is so difficult to explore given the breadth of the topic As lecture supplements, announcements and could be used for faculty training within the department and/or use to relate info to adjuncts. I can try to use class capture in class w/my laptop moviemaker. Consider making more coherent presentations I would use video annotation for some online assignments in my Principle of Marketing Class I plan to incorporate Diigo into my close reading courses. I'm interested in digital annotation. Attempting to design a blended course I may use them in my online classes for announcements and other things May do voiceover of the class notes/slides for an online class that I am teaching
Please use the space below to list your comments/suggestions on developing this workshop: Excellent - No improvement needed! I would like to see addition examples for Mac. How does this technology help (or hurt) women in the classroom, particularly in projecting authority and a professional image? I'm having some trouble using the Echo 360 tool. Maybe that's better addressed one-on-one, but perhaps you could include a brief demo or how to record the videos. Great! => I learned a lot of new skills Present the topic to abstract is in order to succeed. Supplement lectures with skill labs More hands-on work; instead of having a presentation, I would suggest having a real workshop with hands-on exercises I would suggest that we get a bit more time to put into practice the many tools presented to us. If echo360 is supported -opportunity to use it We should do more hands on approach - group work Present the most useful tools from the adventurous instructors not every tool used/experienced by individual instructor. Faculty to present exploring how they integrated
Please list any ideas/requests you may have for future workshops: Feature Specific This certainly a lot to get me started. Concentrate on a few tools supported by the university, developed by faculty, used by students and had a very good feedback. Make them hands on at a site. Movie production - using a variety of tools for a finished product -Video Editing Tools -Explore other social media tools for teaching Perhaps we can focus more on how to connect digital tools to the delivery of specific material to students. Overall, this workshop has been excellent! After BB Boot Camp, I walked out and never had an opportunity to interact with it again, Until June 2nd of this year.

What 3 concepts/skills did you learn from the workshop that will be most useful for applying to your teaching/professional experience: Using websites to enhance the learning of students with disabilities. Understanding assessment strategies (formative and summative). Focusing on different forms of pedagogy (micro-learning, for example). Discussion Board Grading I liked the animated site he recommended. I really liked the information on the meta-studies. I think we need more discussions like this at Sacred Heart Lockdown browser Did not seem to apply to my area Teacher interaction with students Learning communities Feedback
Specifically, how would you apply the concepts/skills you learned in this workshop? I plan to think more about how I assess student work, and I intend to become more intentional about how I evaluate students in both a summative and formative manner. I'm still a little unclear on how the grading works on the DB and how it is beneficial to just grade people s discussions as a generality at the end of the course. I may try to create short animated videos of some of my lectures I'm considering incorporating take-home quizzes in my FLO125 class, so this could work for that.
Please use the space below to list your comments/suggestions on developing this workshop: Interesting discussion. Introduced a lot of pedagogical concepts and terminology. Perhaps focus on a few in more concrete detail. Focus more on assessment tools - the actual tools. I think it would have been more helpful to show how to use effective strategies for assessment. I would have preferred some more dialogue and interaction between the presenter and the faculty; that said, the involvement at the start worked very well, so more would time for Q & A would have worked well. Please list any ideas/requests you may have for future workshops: Perhaps, we could consider a workshop on how virtual learning fits in with the University Mission, the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, etc.

What 3 concepts/skills did you learn from the workshop that will be most useful for applying to your teaching/professional experience: Google Doc & Spreadsheet Google Hangout Google Share Flipgrid YouTube Using Pinterest Using Twitter within the context of the classroom Applying other forms of social media to my teaching Using Social Media for professional purposes.
Specifically, how would you apply the concepts/skills you learned in this workshop? Please use the space below to list your comments/suggestions on developing this workshop: Use Google Doc/Spreadsheet/Hangout in an online class Using spreadsheet to schedule presentations Group conversations I'll use Flipgrid in place of a discussion board Creating a major's community Assigning class projects Online and face to face class (Flipgrid for online discussion) I cannot wait to include this info into my class I found this workshop to be one of the most inspiring! As a result of Pilar's presentation, I began tweeting and started to develop new strategies for my teaching, scholarship, and service! Pilar gave us great ideas for exploring our classes Pilar had to cover so much. Have more time to implement an example for my class would help Time to practice what we are shown How does this technology help or hurt women in presenting themselves as authorities/professionals in the classroom and to their peers? Pilar did great.
Feedback Results from Faculty Participants June 6 th 2014 Workshop: Using Video Tools and Online Discussions to Develop Critical Thinking Skills: Conducted by Prof. Amanda Moras - Sociology
Using Video Tools and Online Discussions to Develop Critical Thinking Skills What 3 concepts/skills did you learn from the workshop that will be most useful for applying to your teaching/professional experience: Using Prezi - I have already signed up! To use Google Docs more effectively in the classroom. To show more captivating videos that inspire active learning. Ideas for using video tools Use of media Embedding or including videos in the discussion board How to make comments on a video To create more dynamic conversations on the discussion board. Better discussion questions for db post Tips on Critical Thinking in DB Tips on Engagement in DB Ideas for improving blackboard discussions Reality check about discussion boards Manage discussion boards Ideas for the use of discussion boards Grading tool for online discussions in Blackboard VideoAnt - Can't wait to try it! Almost all participants mentioned wanting to use it.
Specifically, how would you apply the concepts/skills you learned in this workshop? Online discussions To enhance discussion boards I will use video ant I frequently show videos in class, and I could see using this in precisely the way she used it. In all of my courses This was a wonderful presentation! Lab & Discussions One example: Show video of Tuskegee syphilis study and have them annotate w/ course concepts: Group to choose sides Using video ant in my online class I hope that soon I will have time to experiment / play with apps. Responding to students posts Using media resources
Please use the space below to list your comments/suggestions on developing this workshop: I have no suggestions; the workshop worked wonderfully, and Amanda did a truly terrific job!!!! Excellent presentation. Amanda was engaging and provided helpful tools and suggestions. Great presentation! I'd love to see more examples of the discussion and videos you made. Show the grading tool for online discussions Special interest group to come together to learn. Mini workshops Would have liked to see more of the videos Please list any ideas/requests you may have for future workshops: I envision future workshops focused more on how faculty can use digital tools more effectively to enhance their own scholarship, creative work, and research! Need one/one support - After BBB camp I walked away and never looked back - until this week
