2 WORKFLOWS FOR VARIOUS VIDEO FORMATS Using DVD Shop Express It seems there are dozens of various video formats on the market today. This can make it challenging to convert these files to DVD or other formats. Before we talk about the stepby step instructions of the various workflows, we should look at the categories of the different formats you might encounter. For a quick review, here are the most common formats you might encounter: Analog tape will need to be captured using the composite and S-Video connections 1. Analog a. VHS tape (VCR player deck) b. Hi-8 (Deck or Hi-8 camera) c. VHS-C (VCR player ) Digital Tape is best captured through firewire (DV port) 2. Digital Tape a. Digital-8 (Digital 8 deck or camera) b. Mini-DV Mini-DV deck or camera) c. HDV ( HDV camera) Pre-Captured files are transferred to the DVD Shop through the USB port or card reader ) 3. Pre-Captured Files (SD Cards, hard drives, DVD, etc) a. MPEG II (DVD and some cameras) b. MPEG 4 (also known as AVCHD and is the most common format for digital cameras) c. MOV/MOD (Quicktime format used by Canon, JVC and Panasonic) There are several solutions on the market to achieve the following tasks, but I will describe the equipment recommended for the fastest, most professional solution for the money: 1. DVD Shop Express BR (includes a Blu-Ray, HD workflow) 2. Epson Printer Artisan 725 or Artison 50 (will write directly to a DVD white label disk) 3. Panasonic ES 10, 15, 20, 25, 50. (pass your VHS tapes through one of these recorders and it will keep your audio in sync) 4. Other items, not available through Applied Magic, would be a VCR, Hi-8 camera/deck, Digital-8 camera/deck, Mini-DV camera/deck. This should cover most of the major tape formats on the market. (I do not recommend starting with film transfer. Try outsourcing with Peterson s Video Transfer. They use DVD Shop so the look and feel will be the same.)

3 ANALOG/DIGITAL VIDEO TAPE STEP-BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS (making a DVD with case wrap) 1. Place tape into camera 2. Connect video cable to camera or playback deck 3. Use the same cable (s-video or composite) to connect to time base corrector 4. Use a second video cable and plug into the output of the time base corrector 5. Connect the other end of second cable to the back of DVD Shop 6. Plug audio cables directly into DVD Shop from the video camera or deck 7. Open DVD Shop program and type in the information for the DVD 8. Select a menu template which would be appropriate for the video being captured 9. Only select write DVD and Print case wrap in the setup window 10. Click on more button a select case wrap tab and select a printer 11. Select Cute PDF Writer as your virtual printer. To install go to Select a case wrap template 13. Install a blank DVD in the DVD Shop optical drive 14. Go back to setup window of DVD Shop and click on the red record button 15. Start the camera or player (video source) 16. Click on the play button on DVD Shop setup window to start the capturing 17. When video is complete, select stop (it will stop based on the capture time limit 18. Let DVD Shop author the DVD and write the file to the DVD 19. During this time a window pops up which contains the case wrap PDF 20. Give the PDF file a file name (usually match it with the project name) 21. Load your next job. There is no reason to wait to print your case wrap or label 22. Make sure on all your jobs you select write DVD and print case wrap 23. Start recording your next job and while capturing, begin your print jobs 24. Start by opening up the PDF file for the case wrap and print to Epson Artisan 25. While DVD Shop is capturing, you can still go to the more button and select Disc label tab 26. Select a printer (in my example it is an Epson Artisan printer) and select the print Disc option in the properties window 27. Click on the print now button on the DVD Shop interface 28. Assemble the case wrap to the case and put the DVD in the case. 29. Repeat process until all tapes is recorded. 30. Get paid from customer

4 TURNING A PRE-CAPTURED QUICKTIME (MOV,MOD) FILE INTO A DVD 1. Place SD Card (or USB if hard drive camera) into the DVD Shop Express 2. Drag or copy desired files into Aimersoft or AVS 8 converter software program 3. Make sure your conversion output will be VOB or DVD format 4. If Aimersoft, make sure you combine into one file (AVS is automatic) 5. Convert file 6. Go to the Output folder and grab the VOB video files (usually it is VTS_0_1 then _2 etc.) and drag them into DVD Shop interface 7. Press OK on the DVD Shop Interface 8. The next window make sure VOB is selected, then press OK 9. On the set-up window of DVD Shop, type in a new Project ID, title, template, etc. then press Author (you could have write DVD and print case wrap checked as well) 10. If you selected Write DVD you should have a completed DVD as well as a casewrap. TURNING A PRE-CAPTURED MPEG II AND MP4 FILE INTO A DVD 1. Place SD card (or USB if hard drive camera) into the DVD Shop Express 2. Drag or copy desired files directly into the DVD Shop interface 3. If you have multiple smaller files, then you may want to combine in Aimersoft or AVS. If so, follow instructions above. 4. Once files are loaded in DVD Shop Express, select OK 5. Next window, make sure AVI or other files is checked. If MP4 is not listed, type it in box in this category. 6. On the set-up window of DVD Shop, type in a new Project ID, title, template, etc. then press Author (you could have write DVD and print case wrap checked as well) 7. Instead of selecting the author button, select the Encode button (DVD Shop will need to transcode the MP4 files into MPEGII). 8. If you selected Write DVD you should have a completed DVD as well as a casewrap. TRANSFER HD VIDEO (MOV, MOD, MTS, M2TS, MP4 MPEG II) TO BLU-RAY DISC (requires a DVD Shop Express BR which includes a Blu-ray burner) 1. Open AVS Editor and select Import meadia files 2. Make sure you have SD card, camera or other sources connected to DVD Shop 3. Select desired clips from source 4. Click on disc menu and select a template 5. Click on Produce and select disc then click next 6. Select Blu-Ray and select the desired profile, then next 7. Click on create and when finished will prompt you to burn a disc 8. Make sure you have a Blu-Ray disc in the Blu-Ray burner (drive F) then click burn

5 My Favorite Video Profit Centers! 1. Video to DVD Transfer with DVD Shop Express This is one of the hottest Profit Centers. Virtually everyone has videotapes they cherish, but these tapes are collecting dust in a closet somewhere and are slowly deteriorating. Many family and business tapes from the 80s and early 90s are already in danger. These video images could be beginning to fade. Think about all of the business, churches, schools, and other organizations that have hundreds, if not thousands, of programs on videotape. This huge market offers you great profit potential. Transfer tapes to DVD and give new life to the your clients' memories. 2. Provide Video Transfers as a video editing file Many customers would like to edit their old VHS tapes on their own editing system, but need to convert these tapes into a digital format. Here s a way to double your profits on the same tape transfer. Why not offer the customer the option of converting the files to AVI format or Quicktime (if using an Apple). Most editing systems will accept one of these formats. You could provide it on a DVD (separate from the playable DVDs) or flash drive. For big jobs, consider an external drive which are under $ DVD--CD & Media Duplication This Profit Center is huge. With a purchase of a DVD duplicator, you can offer what many businesses, schools, organizations, and consumers need - duplication of their creations. Once customers know you provide this service, you will be surprised how often you will use this product. It is the easiest, fastest way to generate revenue for your store. Simply put the master CD or DVD in the top drawer, put the blanks in the other drawers, push a button, and wait 5 minutes. You charge up to anywhere from $5-10 per disc.

6 Photo Video Montage Using ProShow Gold, you can convert jpg images into a entertaining slide show for your customer. Drag in the photos desired, add music and transitions, then output the video to an MPEGII file. Drag that file into DVD Shop and create an authored disc with casewrap. This should be a natural since you have customers bringing in photos anyway. If the photos are for a special event, then you offer the video 4. Video Prints -- Photos From Your Videos Your clients and needs vary - extreme sports, weddings, security cameras, investigations, police departments, and TV news broadcasts, for example. Your customers may want a picture of the people, places, and things that get caught on video. Offer to grab extracted video files to as stills (jpg) and print them for the customer or turn it into a slide show. You could have the customer select the images by timecode or you could randomly select video frames. Convert Videos to Websites and Youtube - Many customers would like to share their favorite video (slide show) on Youtube. This is a simple conversion once you have digitized the file. Convert the file and delivery it on a disc, or upload it for the customer. 5. DVD Authoring DVD Authoring is a Profit Center that goes a giant step beyond simple DVD transfers. You can provide this service for businesses, organizations, and individuals - the same customers who come to you for simple transfers. When you transfer tapes to DVD, you can suggest to your customers that they go the extra step and let you create a DVD with chapters, arranged chronologically or by event. Your customers will be able to access these chapters with the touch of a button. They get convenience; you gain income. Upsell this feature by showing a customer a complete casewrap with printed chapter thumbnails. Explain to the customer that the same thumbnails are on the DVD menu. With DVD Shop, this takes no additional time, but allows you to increase the price by 20%..

7 Archive entire video production Many of my customers are receiving a request to have the entire video job stored somewhere safe. You could offer to transfer all your video jobs to an external drive. Have the customer use their own drive and transfer all the file images to it. This only takes minutes, but the customer does not need to know it. PRICING OF SERVICES Pricing may vary depending on competition, demographics of area and marketing. However, here are some prices which may reflect the low end of video services. Some IPI customer charge much more for tape transfers and slide presentations. Basic Tape transfer (Blu-Ray is usually double the price of a DVD) Converting Pre-Captured Files is usually the same price To increase the price of your tape transfer, offer a customized case wrap and authored DVD for an additional $5-10. Show the customer a sample of the case wrap. When they realize that thumbnails of the DVD will help them identify what is on the DVD. Slide Show from scanned photos or slides Great for memorials, graduations, birthday parties, weddings..

8 Also consider creating a photo montage from your customers tape transfer DVD. Extract frames from the DVD and create a slide show with music. This only takes minutes to produce and is an easy upsell for wedding and other special DVD memories. Other Potential Services Consider these services: Capture video frames from video and put to music (ProShow Gold) $50 Convert Tape transfer files to AVI Files so customer can edit $35 Convert files to Youtube format so customer can upload $20 Backup all media to external drive for safe keeping $5 per GB DVD Duplication $10 first copy $5 for additional Rip and re-author an existing DVD $25 International conversion (PAL to NTSC) $30 Audio tapes to CD $25 UPSELL Here is an example of how you could upsell a customers wedding video tape transfer: Tape transfer to DVD $20 Upsell the casewrap/author $10 Upsell the Photo Montage (Pro Show Gold) $50 Upsell providing Youtube version of Montage $20 Instead of collecting $20 from the customer, you are collecting $100 for the same video. The delta difference in cost is about $1 for case wrap and 20 minutes of labor.
