3 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 3 of 18 Accessibility (ONLINE) Blackboard 9 Basics WEDNESDAY 5 MAR AND WEDNESDAY 6 AUG FRIDAY 31 JAN, FRIDAY 9 MAY AND FRIDAY 17 OCT 1PM 4PM In this online workshop we will go through most of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) checklist and apply it to e-learning content. Accessibility is not just about helping a few, but about improving the online experience for all users. This workshop welcomes those who are new to using a learning management system (LMS) to the exciting world of Blackboard Learn 9.1 (Bb9). It will take you through the basic tools and functions of Bb9, such as communication tools, resource addition and student tracking, leaving you equipped with all the elementary skills you need to bring your online classroom to life. Accessibility Tools in Blackboard Collaborate (ONLINE) WEDNESDAY 19 MAR AND WEDNESDAY 20 AUG Blackboard 9 Extended FRIDAY 7 FEB, FRIDAY 16 MAY AND FRIDAY 24 OCT 1PM 4PM Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing, or virtual classroom, product. It allows lecturers and administrators to teach students and meet colleagues while working from their own computer. The potential to reach remote students and workers is one of the most attractive features of this product; however, there are many reasons why you need to consider accessibility for online sessions. This session explores the use of Accessibility tools that are integrated in the virtual rooms. If you are already comfortable with the Blackboard Learn 9.1 (Bb9) environment and are looking to take your online course to the next level, this workshop reveals how to locate existing digital resources and integrate them in your Bb9 course. Learn how to create quizzes and assignments and check students progress at a glance using the powerful new grade book features. These features, coupled with the program s new early warning system, make checking students online attendance and progress easier than ever before.

4 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 4 of 18 Blackboard 9 Advanced Blackboard Collaborate (ONLINE) FRIDAY 14 FEB, FRIDAY 23 MAY AND FRIDAY 31 OCT DATE WEDNESDAY 5 FEB AND WEDNESDAY 23 JULY 1 4PM 10:30AM NOON Being able to work in Blackboard Learn 9.1 (Bb9) is one thing, but knowing how to make Bb9 work for you is another. In this advanced workshop, you will get to explore all those features that can often be overlooked, including: adaptive release custom grading schemas groups rubrics virtual classrooms Please note that workshop attendees must already be proficient at creating content items without instruction. Reach remote students and workers with Blackboard Collaborate, a web conferencing, or virtual classroom, product allowing lecturers and administrators to teach students and meet colleagues while working at their own computer. This online session explores how to use Bb Collaborate virtual rooms, including how to manage and use participant windows, text chat, audio adjustments, the whiteboard, video and polling functions, as well as exploring application sharing, breakout rooms and a web tour.

5 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 5 of 18 Building Online Courses using Frameworks FRIDAY 21 FEB, FRIDAY 14 MAR, FRIDAY 30 MAY, FRIDAY 15 AUG AND FRIDAY 7 NOV 1 4PM This workshop is designed for participants who have completed the Moodle 2 Basics or Blackboard Learn 9.1 Basics workshop. You will learn more about Online Frameworks, how to get them, how to use them, and how they can help your training organisation improve their online course offerings. We will then go into an open workshop time, to help you start developing your online course. We ll start you off using an Online Framework, a basic online course structure set up in either Moodle or Bb9. See: for a list of Frameworks. Even if there is no current Framework for your exact course, you can use our blank template Framework to assist you to skip a few steps in setting up your Moodle or Bb9 course. Collaborative Numeracy: Working Together to Build Numeracy Skills in Adults available on application This program will be a series of hands-on, practical, adult numeracy teaching workshops. The strategies covered will focus on making sense of numeracy concepts and language through enjoyable activities, rather than rote learning of rules which has failed learners in the past. Strategies will include a variety of structured pair and small group activities as well as the use of hands-on materials. Learning games and activities for skills practice and recall of number facts, such as multiplication tables, will also be included. Expect to walk away with resources and ideas you can apply immediately with your students as well as a deeper knowledge of numeracy concepts to use in your work. The program of three 1½ day workshops will introduce and explore strategies for teaching: calculation and estimation with whole numbers, decimals and percentages measurement, calculation and estimation with relevant metric units interpretation and creation of graphs, and averages.

This workshop is designed to enable you to ensure that you develop and use valid, consistent assessment processes that meet Training Package and AQTF/NVR standards. In this workshop we will explore the most complex and convoluted subject that can make or break a good lecturer. The topic of referencing, copyright and plagiarism may sound dry, but it is so important in our technologically evolving world. It is designed to give participants an overview or summary of the topic and the opportunity to have their questions answered. The session requires pre-reading and activities, and includes access to follow-up reading and activities. In this workshop we will explore the most complex and convoluted subject that can make or break a good lecturer. This two-day workshop provides an induction to teaching CAVSS for eligible specialist language, literacy and numeracy teaching staff. $198; LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED This interactive workshop takes you through the steps of designing assessment tools, focussing on both on and off the job situations. Customising Digital Content FRIDAY 11 APR, FRIDAY 27 JUNE, FRIDAY 22 AUG AND FRIDAY 14 NOV Designing Assessment Tools (ONLINE) MONDAY 10 MAR AND MONDAY 15 SEPT CLAIRE WERNER $44 In this hands-on workshop we will look at using freely available tools to customise existing learning objects to suit your training requirements and make the amended version available to your learners. The workshop also tackles how to contextualise text and images, and how to re-order navigation and pages. During the workshop you will not only explore how to use tools like VET Reload, GIMP and KompoZer, but you will also come away having learnt the principles of good website development and best practice. 8 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 8 of 18 Developing Video Content Camera Techniques (ONLINE) Developing Video for Training Editing WEDNESDAY 30 APR AND WEDNESDAY 22 OCT FRIDAY 7 MAR, FRIDAY 5 SEPT AND FRIDAY 21 NOV 9AM 4PM In this online session, we explore the dos and don ts of video in education and training. From what to shoot to how to shoot it, we will implement tried and tested techniques that can make all the difference. Feel free to have a webcam or camera phone at hand to test your new skills during the workshop. Developing Video for Training Filming FRIDAY 28 FEB, FRIDAY 29 AUG AND THURSDAY 20 NOV In this workshop you will discover the possibilities of video editing first hand. With supplied footage, you will learn how to: Create Screen Casts Cut footage Use transitions Add text, images, and titles Add music or voice over Effectively use tasteful effects Utilise overlay techniques. This workshop will use Windows Movie Maker but the principles and techniques are transferable to any system. 9AM 4PM In this hands on workshop we will look at simple tricks and tips that will help make your educational videos look and sound more professional. Using group activities, examples, and short projects, we ll look at: Planning Equipment Camera techniques Filming styles Audio.

9 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 9 of 18 E-assessment (ONLINE) WEDNESDAY 18 JUNE AND WEDNESDAY 24 SEPT Effective and Efficient Strategies for Competency Based Assessment THURSDAY 10 APR AND THURSDAY 27 NOV DR RUSSELL DOCKING 9AM 4.30PM E-assessment is a broadly-based concept that covers a wide range of activities where technology is used in the designing and delivery of assessments. It also includes the processes of reporting, storing and transferring data associated with assessments. This workshop will cover the following topics: What is e-assessment? How do you conduct e-assessments? What resources can you use for e-assessing? E-assessment guidelines What are e-portfolios and how can they support RPL. $198; LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED In registered training organisations across Australia, AQTF standard 1.5 relating to assessment has the greatest issue of non-compliance. This workshop aims to answer frequently asked questions about the interpretation of units of competency, the appropriate method and mix of evidence gathering, the strategies used to make the competency judgement, the use of simulation and online assessment and assessment validation. 10 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 10 of 18 Introduction to Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA) Part 1 Introduction to Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA) Part 2 TUESDAY 25 MAR AND TUESDAY 12 AUG TUESDAY 9 TO WEDNESDAY 10 SEPT CHERYL WILTSHIRE CHERYL WILTSHIRE 9AM 4.30PM 9AM 4.30PM ; LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED ; LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED This workshop for new CGEA teachers is designed to help them orient themselves, and their teaching approaches, to teach literacy and numeracy skills to adults. The workshop will focus on finding ways to establish a teaching/learning environment that most closely reflects the way that literacy and numeracy skills are acquired in the real world, by all of us. Through a series of participatory activities, teachers will: Examine the main issues faced by adults returning to formal study, and the implications for CGEA teachers Identify processes which most effectively support literacy learning in adults Explore strategies for setting up collaborative teaching and learning practices Develop an overview of the relationship between effective adult literacy teaching and the use of the CGEA framework as a basis for formal skills recognition and credentialing Practice interpreting the CGEA curriculum document for assessment, moderation and course planning purposes Clarify questions regarding how the CGEA sits within the VET sector as a pathway for students. This workshop for CGEA teachers is designed to explore the aspects of teaching adult literacy classes that challenge teachers as they attempt to meet the needs of all their students. The workshop will focus on finding ways to establish a teaching/learning environment that most closely reflects the way we all acquire literacy and numeracy skills in the real world. The content of the workshop will include: Setting up collaborative teaching and learning practices Finding and creating teaching resources for students with a diversity of backgrounds and existing skills Meeting the needs of different levels in the one group Using the CGEA framework to recognise existing and developing skills Recording assessment, moderation and course planning that describe flexible responses to students needs while keeping a focus on teaching rather than paperwork The relationship of literacy teaching to broader language and numeracy issues. The workshop will be of value to both experienced and relatively new CGEA teachers. Participants must have completed at least 6 months of CGEA teaching and have done an induction workshop for the CGEA such as Introduction to the CGEA Part 1.

Mobile Technology and Augmented Reality FRIDAY 4 APR, FRIDAY 6 JUNE, FRIDAY 12 SEPT AND FRIDAY 28 NOV In this face to face, hands on workshop we ll demonstrate how mobile technology can help your online students spend less time sitting at a computer and more time out in the real world. You will experience first-hand, Mobile Facilitation and Assessment, Augmented Reality, a QR quest and more. We will also discuss key strategies and technologies for the constantly evolving mobile space. You are invited to bring along your own device (smart phone or tablet) regardless of brand or operating system. WiFi can be provided if requested at time of registration.

We ll discuss, anytime, anywhere learning and assessment, Augmented Reality, QR codes and beyond. You are invited to bring along your own device (smart phone or tablet) regardless of brand or operating system. Welcome to Moodle. This workshop is an introduction to the Moodle 2 LMS and will cover setting up a new course, restructuring a course using different formats, and adding resources and activities to the course. It is a basic-level workshop designed for those who have never used the system before, as well as those who already use Moodle but want some tips and techniques. Moodle 2 Extended FRIDAY 7 FEB, THURSDAY 20 MAR, FRIDAY 16 MAY, FRIDAY 1 AUG AND FRIDAY 24 OCT Once you have mastered how to load content into Moodle, it s time to tackle some of the more advanced features it can offer. In this workshop, you will learn how to find and upload readymade content, use the gradebook features, add quizzes and assignments and administer your course efficiently. Please note that in order to participate in this workshop you will need to have basic Moodle skills.

13 Professional Learning Workshops 2014 Workshop information page 13 of 18 Moodle 2 Advanced Moodle Shape up your Shell FRIDAY 14 FEB, FRIDAY 23 MAY, FRIDAY 8 AUG AND FRIDAY 31 OCT FRIDAY 20 JUNE AND FRIDAY 19 SEPT 1PM 4PM Moodle Advanced or the mastery of marking in Moodle will explore how to configure your grade book for optimum use and maximized performance. With so many options to choose from, and standard and advanced grading methods available, it can be a bit overwhelming. Time spent on grading can be minimized but still provide maximum feedback for students. In this session you will learn how to grade students using rubrics, checklists, standard grading, and more! If you already have a Moodle teaching space set up and would like to improve it by getting to grips with some of its fancier formatting, join this high-level hands-on workshop and explore how to stop the dreaded scroll of death. Please note that this fast-paced workshop on is aimed at experienced Moodle users; to participate, you will need to be proficient at creating content items without instruction. Moodle Lessons and Groups FRIDAY 20 JUNE AND FRIDAY 19 SEPT Online Facilitation (ONLINE) WEDNESDAY 19 FEB, WEDNESDAY 14 MAY, WEDNESDAY 3 SEPT AND WEDNESDAY 19 NOV Get more out of Moodle while making life more interesting and challenging for your learners by exploring how to create lessons in Moodle 2. During this course we will also look at how to make groups work for you on your site and integrate them into your conditional releases of content. Please note that in order to participate in this workshop you will need to have a sound knowledge of how to use Moodle. This can be obtained by completing our Moodle 2 Basics, Extended and Advanced workshops. In this workshop we will explore the multi-faceted gem of good e-facilitation, looking at handy tips and tricks that will set you and your learners along the path of good e-facilitation practice. This workshop will also review how many traditional face-to-face techniques can still be employed in the online environment with the help of a little imagination.

So it is well worth learning how to prepare for this and make it a positive experience. This workshop examines good-practice assessment tools and the RPL assessment resource that has been developed by the Department of Training and Workforce Development. This practical interactive workshop will explore the concept of using systems for continuous improvement and the role of the internal audit. As part of the workshop, you will use commonly available tools to self-assess against both the AQTF and Standards for National VET Regulator registered training organisations. Are you concerned about possible issues which might arise? We will discuss some of the pitfalls trainers need to be aware of in this new environment of social media and how to be safe online. This session will enable you to: In this workshop we will; unpack units of competence, map e-learning tools as delivery methods, (where applicable) and discuss structuring content inside a learning management system. A good progression from this workshop would be to book into the Building Online Courses using Frameworks workshop to put these skills into action. Identify common social media platforms and discuss their advantages and disadvantages Use social media to develop and maintain a positive online presence Plan a simple strategy that will enable you to use common social media platforms such as Facebook or LinkedIn with learners and colleagues Develop simple guidelines for using social media with learners and colleagues. Sustainability in Training WEDNESDAY 26 MAR AND THURSDAY 21 AUG CHRISTINE COOPER $99 This workshop will cover the fundamentals of embedding sustainability into units of competency; no matter what your industry sector is. It will help you find resources to support your training and determine the difference between education about sustainability (EaS) and education for sustainability (EfS).

Teach Me Grammar available on application MONDAY 19 TO TUESDAY 20 MAY CROWN PERTH Build your knowledge of the complexities of English grammar as you develop teaching strategies based on your new awareness to help students build their oral and written communication skills. It provides a useful overview on this sector and looks at the structure of the national VET system, training packages, the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) and Standards for National VET Regulator RTOs. This practical workshop is an introduction to writing for the online environment.
